This is a great spot while you're visiting the SF MOMA, enjoying all of the beautiful art! It's located on the fifth floor and has ample amount of indoor and outdoor seating! They have a lot of drink options, including coffees, teas, and sodas. Lots of farm table options that are fresh and full of fresh vegetables. You definitely pay more than if you were outside of the museum, but the convenience of the location is high. Counter service and they bring the food out to you promptly! read more

I enjoyed my lunch here at Cafe 5. I had the Teriyaki Salmon Rice Bowl with edamame, pickled veggies, ginger and half of an avocado. And also a probiotic drink. It was nutritious, slightly fancy and expensive lunch. Prices commensurate with the location as it is on the 5th floor inside the SFMOMA museum. The cafe is spacious with an inside/outside design, airy and modern. Pigeons also like this place as they walk through the area nodding their heads to us as if they are museum constables. I enjoyed the integration of current exhibits with their cafe food/dishes. Currently they are using more colorful plates and menu to complement the KAWS exhibit. I had an early lunch and enjoyed a delicious teriyaki salmon bowl. The portions were just right with a nice cut of salmon surrounded by sweet pickles, edamame, sliced avocado, pickled ginger, and slivered scallions layered on top of a pinkish sweet sauce, rice and furikake. I appreciated the rice portion, which wasn't too large, that helped to blend the flavors of protein, sauce and vegetables. Perhaps because I got there early, the ingredients were absolutely fresh. if I wasn't so full, I would have included my favorite dessert in this cafe: the carrot cake. I eat lunch here frequently because I visit SFMOMA frequently. I've always found the food and ambiance to be excellent but my lunch there a couple days ago was so outstanding that I finally had to post. Their Basil Panzanella salad was only $20 but easily a 6-star entree! It had one ingredient that I loathe--zucchini, but the chef managed to make even that taste great via grilling and seasoning. My one complaint is why in a place with fabulous quality tea bags, why they don't know how to make a cup of tea. Obvs, pots are preferable for tea. Failing that mugs made of pot would suffice. Paper cups are awful for tea but worse than that, you cannot make tea by handing the customer a cup of hot water and a tea bag!! What the heck!! (This seems a common way in SF and the tea bags are such good quality, it's tragic) You need the water on a rolling boil and poured directly onto the bag. Milk should be in a small jug on the side. I went to SF MoMA for the day and forgot to eat and thought I would have to hurry through the exhibits to get some food but when I stumbled upon this cafe I was excited. Checking out the menu I took a chance with my fav sandwich and tried a little of everything. The presentation was great, the food was quality and the drink was good too! Usually cafes like this are just so-so, but I was pleasantly surprised for what I got and the price. All this together was about $40 and for the city, that's quite a steal. They also have a children's menu, however, I didn't get a chance to view it. Thought it would look odd considering I was not with any children lol. Making food tasteless must be a superpower. This was one of the worst food I ever had in my life that costs $19. With some grass and a little piece of tasteless quiche, I would say the total for the overall ingredient is about $4. If it wasn't for the energy to see more art, I wouldn't eat any air at SFMOMA. It's very difficult to enjoy a lunch here with multiple pigeons wandering, and in some cases even flying around the inside seating area. I had a mushroom and oyster sandwich which was greasy and difficult to eat. The mushrooms appeared and tasted like reconstituted dried mushrooms and I did not see any oysters. Overall there was a sweet tasting dressing on everything, including the small side salad. My partner had a quiche which she enjoyed very much. My advice is to take care of your choices. The environment is large and roomy, fresh, with views of the sculptures in the garden. The staff are very helpful. This unappealing sandwich and a small glass of iced tea cost $30.96 (including a tip), though one orders after waiting in a long line, then waits for your plate to arrive at your table. Great little place to enjoy within the museum. I always need a coffee and I'm glad that they opened up in the old Blue Bottle Cafe of the past (pre- renovation of the museum). It's a perfect spot with outdoor seating amongst sculptures. The menu was lovely although we only opted to share a phenomenal Ham & Cheese Croissant. Solid restaurant within Moma offering fairly healthy options to share. Located on the 5th floor you can opt in to be seated at one of their indoor tables or one of the tables outside near the sculpture garden. I love how they have large windows & keep a portion of it open so you can walk freely between the two. How it works: 1) Check in at the front to grab menus 2) Grab a table indoors or outdoors 3) Once you decide on location get in line to order food at the front & grab a number 4) They will bring the food to your table once ready Water & utensils are self-serve near the large windows. We ended up getting the pork sandwich to share. $17 isn't the cheapest thing but considering that it's inside of Moma it's comparable to SF prices and was able to be shared between two people. The sandwich itself was pretty tasty. The pork was seasoned well and the meat was tender. We got the coleslaw on the side so it didn't get the bread soggy and they add a pickle slice/side of mustard that you can add on yourself. read more

We went there for a lunch meeting on Monday just before 13:00. I was afraid that they might be very crowded but it was about 80% full, very organized, fairly quiet and just overall wonderful atmosphere. It's "order at the counter" service but the serving staff is very attentive and nice. And the food! I had a salmon with wild rice salad, and it was delicious. The antipasto plate was excellent too. Reasonable price for the setting, location and food. Don't forget to appreciate the Heath Ceramics dinnerware. Just a pleasing experience altogether. This is how a museum restaurant should be. While the meal we had was quite tasty, it was not equal to the price point. We paid $18.00 for a kabocha squash dish. While it was plated beautifully, it was skant on the squash. There were three thinly sliced pieces of kabocha atop a bed of micro greens, crispy capers, and Calabrian chile oil, all of which were encircled by a swath of yogurt. Like, I said, it was tasty but overpriced. Perhaps $11 or $12 would be a more appropriate sum to pay. Having read other reviews about the service and vibe the staff gives, we wondered what we might experience. In two words: not good. As we stood in line waiting to give our orders, we witnessed a white woman worker at the register castigating an elderly woman of color, who was juggling her cane and purse while attempting to make payment. It seemed that she wasn't moving quickly enough for the staff person. Fortunately we didn't have to deal with this particular staffer as another one at his register waived us forward. But, we were wrong. Our meals came quickly. I reached up for my plate in order to help the server manuver the many plates she was carrying. Then I saw that it was Ms. Cranky Pants, who had moved from the register to service work. She frowned at my gesture and pivoted her body to deliver the other plates, and mine was the last one left for her to place on the table. Then she reached across my lunch plate to retrieve our identifying number from the other side of the table. As she did so, her scarf dragged across the entire circumference of my plate. Then she left. I enjoy the convenience of being able to snack or sip at one SFMOMA's eateries, but with the cost being so greatly inflated and the service being so rude, we will look elsewhere in the area for our future meals. read more

Exactly what you would expect. Great place to grab some art while you are here for lunch. The menu has 6-7 very good lunch dishes that are made to order with fresh ingredients and thoughtful spicing and seasonings. You order at the counter and your food generally comes out in 3-5 mins...pretty fast. Prices are museum for sure but not totally Matisse-level. Chicken tostadas are yummy and fancy, and not a taco-y hidden kids menu item. Garbanzo bean salad is 60% beans + kale + a scoop of quinoa. The salmon salad is the heartiest item and has an excellent dressing. Healthy salads in portions a docent would find delightful (ie a little bit on the small side) They have plenty of tables inside and more on two outside patios. The decks can be hot in the sun or cold in the shadow, but when the air is right eating in the sculpture's shadow can be awesome. The patrons tend to include an older crowd and some touristes, so ordering can be a little slow as people who've waited in a 10 min line decide at the counter what they're going to order. read more

The food is gourmet and a little overpriced. Should a pulled pork sandwich really be $15? Actually, I'm kind of sick of it. The menu is a little limited. White rice and fried anything are a few of my favorite things...so naturally the Wild Mushroom and Three Cheese Arancini caught my eye when I was looking for a snack 3 hours into my visit at SF MOMA! Cafe 5 has a welcoming presence on the 5th floor, located near one of the main staircases and next to the sculpture garden. They serve up a seasonal California-fusion menu, coffee and tea, wine, and a variety of sweet and savory pastries. We started out with an Arnold Palmer, which was spot on with a nice balance of iced tea and lemonade, and a hot cup of illy coffee. Minutes later, the arancini arrived with an unexpectedly beautiful presentation. After a quick photoshoot, I dove in and was very pleased! The arancini was perfectly fried and chock full of mushrooms and cheesy al dente rice. The sweet corn sauce and smoked paprika aioli seemed like it would be sauce overkill, but it was actually the perfect amount and became a nice creamy dressing for the pile of mixed greens in the middle of the plate. I initially thought the appetizer was a bit pricey at $15, but the plate could have easily come out of full service kitchen at a nice restaurant. The portion was reasonable and the quality was evident! Trays shaped like painter's palates, whimsical cube-shaped vases, and minimalist white decor were the finishing touches to Cafe 5 that embodied the theme of the museum very well. I've read mixed reviews about whether or not you can actually access Cafe 5 without a $25 ticket to the museum. My advice would be to err on the side of caution and only make it a part of your museum visit. There are plenty of other great eateries in the area...but if you're already here, it's worth a try! read more

We strolled by Cafe 5 and the beautiful architecture and airy atmosphere with notes of spices danced around our noses and pulled us in. We ordered the Beef Stew special, Mushroom and Cheese Arancini Salad, and Bread Pudding with Poached Pear. Wow, in no way did I expect the beautifully curated dishes that artistically captured the modern essence of SFMOMA. Yummmm!! Everything was delicious, full of flavor, depth and texture. We even felt guilty for destroying the beauty of the bread pudding, which happened to be the most delish bread pudding I've ever tasted! We gulped down our Irish coffees and before we knew it, the museum was closing. Such memorable and fun times we had at SFMOMA which were mostly spent indulging our senses at Cafe 5. Ha! Major kudos to the chef and staff!! However, I will be be back soon to explore the artwork... and sample more dishes. read more

Café 5 is such a fabulous spot in the museum. Everyone is so kind and hospitable. The manager, Kerry, is very in tune with her guests and notices all of the little things that can make a visit enjoyable. The location itself also complements the experience--the design is phenomenal. Firstly, all of the pastries here are terrific. They often have exhibition-inspired treats that are impossible to not get. The coffee and tea are always perfect, too-- try the red tea! Food portions are quite generous for a museum cafe. The ingredients are always so fresh, and whether you're having a salad (they're all good) or something fried (like some amazing croquettes), the experience is equally enjoyable. Need a break from your gallery walk? Cafe 5 on the 5th floors serves hot and cold food, from salads to sandwiches and simple dishes ranging in price from $7.50 to $16. Desserts run from $6.50 to $8 and pastries from around $3-6. Order at the counter inside or the kiosk outside! They will give you a number that you can place on your table. The restaurant is part of SFMOMA's Sculpture Garden so it's a nice place to hang out. My husband ordered the Blistered Red Peppers Stuffed with Mediterranean Spiced Rice and Braised Beef Short Ribs ($14) and he enjoyed it a lot, though don't expect too much meat inside. It also came with salad greens on the side. I had the Fried Chicken Bahn Mi ($15). It's a a nice portion, but this is a different take on the Bahn Mi. My sandwich had Asian Slaw, Cilantro and Chili Lime Oil. Tasty but subtle. We had the Strawberry Rhubarb Tart ($6.50) for dessert. It was okay. Not too sweet, not too tart, needed more flavor I think. On a nice day like today, it was a great place to have lunch. They need more umbrellas though for shade! read more

Fruits were fresh and just the right amount of sweetness. Great with coffee! Coconut Shrimp Sandwich: Wow this was delicious, the shrimps were fresh and had a great creamy sauce. We stopped for lunch here after a lovely day going through all the art, and we really enjoyed it. The food was pretty decent, as was the service. We found a free table relatively quickly, even though it was a weekend and therefore packed day. I had the stuffed peppers filled with short ribs and I enjoyed it. Good portion, not too filling, but not stingy either. I would definitely come back again next time I visit the museum. read more
