I like meeting up with friends at this place. It's clean, open, and has a modern and upbeat feel to it. The waitresses and waiters are all in their early 20s who know how to present themselves fashionably. They all speak good English, and most speak Chinese as well. Their drink menu is awesome and very inclusive of everything you might want in a Taiwanese cafe, and the size of drink is HUMONGOUS! If you're wanting to catch up and hang out with friends late at night, this is a good place to go. There is a wide selection of food and drinks (non-alcoholic and alcoholic). I like the pineapple and shrimp fried rice (when it comes out, add in some sriracha) and the General Tso's chicken. The fried squid and salt and pepper corn are good options for appetizers. I wouldn't recommend the chicken wings though. Also, I'm not a fan of kimchi, but I have friends who swear by the kimchi fried udon dish and order it every time. As for the service, it'll vary greatly depending on your server. I've had excellent service at times with some servers, and terrible service with others. This place is open late (until 2 am) and there is ample seating area. A final note: I highly recommend ordering the cold, flavored sake. When I go with a group of people, we usually order a bottle or two of the lychee flavored or the apple flavored sake. It is a great complement to your late night snack. Try it! read more

Let me start off by saying that the best item you can possibly order from this restaurant is the calamari.. ITS ONLY $3 BUCKS DURING HAPPY HOUR, NO EFFING JOKE. AND, ITS SERIOUSLY REALLY GOOD CALAMARI, SOME OF THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD FROM ANY PLACE. It sucks that they don't have proper calamari dip though, they gave me some sweet sauce that I wasn't very fond of so I had to resort to ketchup. I've only had a proper entree here once, and it was some lunch special platter. I don't remember much except that there was steam rice, some chicken poppers, some taro dessert, and some other shit. Honestly it wasn't that great. I tried my friend's fried pot stickers and it was also meh. The only thing I get from Cafe101 now is the calamari, which is pretty fucking amazing. Also, unless you enjoy listening to JPOP/KPOP type music, please don't go at night, because they dim down all their lights and blast that shit pretty loud. I've been here a few times before I got committed to my Yelping ways, and had I written a review at that time, I probably would've given this place a 3. The majority of the times that I had eaten here, it was lunch time and sometimes the wait for food would be ridiculous. However, I'm writing a review solely based on my last experience here, which was at 9:00 pm on a Friday evening. I had never been here at night and didn't realize that it transformed into an Azn club with young Asian kids. Despite these annoyances, it's one of few restaurants open at that time, and I remember the food being fairly tasty. And given my husband's draw to Taiwanese food, I knew we'd be okay. So... for those of you who haven't been there, the menu is GI-GAN-NORMOUS-TIC. TONS of food choices, leaving us staring for 10 minutes. We decided to go with the Pork Chop with Rice and Beef Fried Udon. I was afraid the noodles were going to be too thick (imagine udon as a chow mein...??), but conceded to my husband's insistence. The noodles came first, after about 5-7 minutes, to my surprise. The noodles were cooked a little more than I like (al dente), but the flavor of the sauce and the beef were excellent. Even though this was our second dinner, my husband and I slurped it up. They even offered it with a tiny dish of sweet tapoica for dessert. Then came my tray of pork chop and a bowl of rice with some kind of meat gravy spooned on top. They also included a small dish of potato salad, seaweed and a small egg roll, and another small dish of the same sweet tapioca. The pork was perfectly cooked... crispy batter with flavorful and juicy meat. The gravy (whatever it is) was a good addition to the sticky and chewy rice. The side dishes were whatever... they didn't really add anything. And the tapioca was mild and sweet, a nice ending to the meal. Considering that both entries were less than $10 each, with side dishes and a humble "dessert" and came out pretty quickly, I was impressed. Having lived in Houston through my high school life, it was inevitable that I often ended up here at cafe 101 to eat. I never minded it much. It was overpriced but the ambience is okay and the food tasted acceptable. However, several things happened that made me vow to never come back. First, I was celebrating a birthday. Not only did they get my order wrong twice, they charged me for every single mistake THEY made and when I protested, I was treated as if I was the one who ordered 3 things and refused to pay for it. I asked to speak to the manager and the waiter absolutely refused. He was probably afraid for his job. It was utterly ridiculous and unacceptable. Second, I once literally waited 1.5 hours for my food. Trust me, food here is not worth any wait. Third, I've encountered who couldn't do their job. They either couldn't speak English well or didn't understand me or were clueless in regards to just how to wait tables in general. Once I ate here and didn't get a single refill of my class of water. Ultimately, this restaurant isn't worth supporting. There are plenty of better places to eat in Chinatown Houston. I haven't gone back in 3 years. read more

We ordered a bunch of late night menu items to share - tofu w/ crazy good dipping sauce, calamari, sea salt corn on the cob, fries etc. Tofu was probably the best thing, although all were relatively simple/tasty. Came here on a Tuesday night at 11pm at night and the place was still packed, which is always a good thing. Happy hour runs at 11pm, which is awesome as well! Came here with the gf and got the wheat germ milk tea, lemon oolong, soft shelled crab, chicken nuggets, and fried pork intestines. First off, this place loses a star because they gave us the soft shelled crab first, and the drinks we ordered maybe 10-15 minutes later, which for me is a huge no-no, as I want my drink before I eat! That being said, the soft shelled crab was delicious, well fried, and came with 2 as opposed to just one. The chicken nuggets were tender and well fried, but didn't have a ton of flavor. The fried pork intestines were well fried and delicious, though a little smelly, but hey that's pork intestines for you! All in all this place is pretty solid, but be warned that the service is definitely touch and go, as sometimes it feels like your server stops by every few minutes, and then later no one will pay attention to you at all (another star docked!). I always had a weird feeling when I entered Cafe 101, but eating here is nice and the food is filling! The food here is cheap compared to the surrounding restaurants. They offer boba and other drinks such as tea and milk teas. The drinks are good! I promise it's all good here. The menu is ginormous and it's filled with all good things! I normally order the deep fried pork chop or chicken with black pepper sauce. It's so filling where I had to take left overs home. My coworker told me they used to have girls with short skirts serving food here haha. One time I came in here with some friends that just wanted to chat and not eat with us because they have already eaten somewhere else. The waitress said they regularly charge people to just sit here, but she didn't because it wasn't a busy day. That was nice of her, but one star down because of a stupid policy. Have been here about 3 times and I will only frequent this place again for their decent sushi and drinks. Other entrees are a no go. Highlighted in the review: gyoza, General Tso's, kimchi fried rice, beef udon noodles, salmon hand roll Otherwise, their entrees are lacking for me. I ordered the kimchi fried rice and the kimchi is super diluted and doesn't add flavor to the dish at all. It tasted basically like pork fried rice. The egg rolls (side that comes with the entree) have a thick outer layer that's fried and there's essentially no filling. Same goes for the General Tso's. Thick outer layer, some chicken and it's not even tender. The beef udon noodles are a little too salty. The gyoza as an appetizer was dripping in oil. Otherwise, the spicy salmon hand roll and the California rolls were decent. On a recent dine in, their other special rolls were also pretty good. read more

I love this place! High quality and a full spectrum of foods. Pho, Hot Pot, Sushi, Entrees, Fresh Juices, Sake Selections all available! We especially enjoy the music and the environment. You can tell how much they care about the environment and the scene they have created in the restaurant. I've yet to have anything I didn't love off their menu. The only down side is the specials are pretty sad, which means the price is pretty much the only factor against them. Came in on Friday night at around 8:45pm to grab a late, quick dinner and we waited around 10 minutes before we were able to get a table. If you're unfamiliar with this spot, it's a popular place at night for teens and young adults to get drinks and lounge. It was pretty loud and crowded. I ordered the fried tofu as an appetizer based on high reviews, and I also got the chicken nugget noodle soup and my boyfriend got General Tso's chicken. Their drinks are really awesome, and I always get the passion fruit green tea with tapioca. He got the pink lady, which was pretty much strawberry, banana, and yogurt, I believe? It was just a basic smoothie, nothing too extraordinary. The tofu was good, and I loved that it came with a great dipping sauce and also kimchi. The kimchi tasted a little but plasticky, kind of like it just came out of a package, but the tofu was piping hot and perfectly fried. I still prefer the fried tofu from Star Snow Ice next door though. General Tso's chicken was pretty good, and it came with these cute pickled cucumbers, some kind of potato mash, and an awesome black tea/condensed milk dessert. The noodles were honestly super disappointing. The chicken nuggets were really good, but the noodles and broth were super bland and tasted like nothing. I barely touched it. It also didn't specify on the menu that the broth was a pork base. I just see that that's a problem waiting to happen for people who don't eat pork. It simply said "noodle soup". The beef noodle soup here is a tried and true favorite though, and I really enjoy that a lot. Overall, okay experience. The waitstaff was attentive but disorganized, and we were asked several times if we had ordered certain drinks that actually belonged to other tables, and the menu is absolutely gigantic, which makes ordering a bit overwhelming. I've tried again and again to enjoy the experience of eating at Cafe101 but it has always failed me. Cafe101 is definitely marketed towards young people, teenagers to college students. The hostesses & waitresses are dressed in sexy clothes with a Japanese style, like knee-high socks, heels, mini skirts and chic dress shirts/blouses. The atmosphere is hip and energetic while the interior design is modern and suave. But, decor is probably the only area Cafe101 does well. The food is Americanized Chinese food with very small portions but served on a tray with various stylishly designed dishes to seem like a lot of food. Price per entry is around $8-$10 and they have a full 10 page menu of drinks around $4. The happy hour menu looks good with fried oysters, specialty chicken nuggets for $5, sushi rolls from $3-$10 and sashimi for $1.50 but it's only from 3-6pm Mon-Thurs. Plenty of negatives about Cafe101. Service is very slow and even worse, no server seems to enjoy working there, making the customer's experience feel unwelcome. The food is bland and boring. It's clear they focus more on presentation than the actual food. The worst is I never feel full after eating at Cafe101. Most of the time, after an appetizer and an entree and a drink, I still feel the urge to order another entree. Even if I'm imbibed enough food, I walk out feeling like I ate low quality junk food. For meeting friends to grab a drink, Cafe101 provides a good setting but don't expect to enjoy more past the drink and appetizer. read more

Cafe 101 is a fallback place for me if my friends and I want to eat something, it's late at night, and we can't really decide on anything. Pros: Cafe 101 is like all of Chinatown in one lounge-ish type restaurant. They've got sushi, bubble tea, desserts, hot pot, noodles, fried rice, etc. Their menu is HUGE. I like their stir fried udon- I've tried both seafood and beef. Their hot pot's are also pretty good - especially on a cold day. Drinks are creative and refreshing. Thank you, Cafe 101, for always having relevant sports games on. I can always count on you to have a Rockets game on, hahaha. Happy hour specials! Cons: Service can be a tad slow- unless you have an experienced waitress. While some dishes here are pretty good- you can find better elsewhere. This place was great for our large party. First let me compliment the staff. They were friendly, knowledgeable and very accommodating!! The place was live, modern and hip with TV's, music and illuminating lights. The menu is expansive and offers a wide selection and I love the fact they incorporate photos to help you understand. The place is kinda small and parking can be tight but it's worth a trip. The teas were fantastic and my beef fried rice was delish. My hubby enjoyed the house beef soup and fresh fried calamari with kimchi. Other members of our party feasted on hot pots and oysters. Nothing went to waste and it was a very enjoyable evening. Cafe 101 has been an average to below average experience over the past few years I have been there. I will only come if I were showing my friends/visitors around town because it is the nicest looking restaurant in Chinatown (in my opinion) and for the mini-hotpot. My biggest gripe with Cafe 101 is the food. Food portions are pretty small for what you pay, and the price range for a meal ranges roughly around $8-$14. Taste is very average and no more than average. The food that Cafe 101 is known for are their mini-hotpots -- which comes in a deep hotplate bowl that sits on top of mini-fire that burns out after a while. It is a soup base and a mix of vegetables and meats depending on what you get. Again, the taste isn't anything special nor unique. If you want a "true" Chinese-tasting experience, you need to look elsewhere. Also their Japanese bentos are not the greatest -- sushi rolls are small, the texture of the rice doesn't feel right, and the taste is average to below average. Service has been average. In other words, they will perform the very basics in waiting a table -- refilling drinks, taking orders, bringing the food out, handing out necessary utensils, and of course giving you the bill. However, service is average because they don't seem to consistently refill your drinks and attend to your table. It has been a different story every time I have been there. So what is with the Cafe 101 hype? It has a very nice interior with a touch of contemporary styling to make the stay enjoyable and also the "mood" lighting to give it the romantic and "cool" feel. Second are your relatively good looking waitresses -- young and Asian. That can sure draw a certain crowd in already before anything else. I don't know if the mini-hotpot is an "attraction" but it sure was for me. If I were to give a rating with 1 as lowest and 5 highest: Food: 2.5 Service: 3 Interior: 5 *And if you are curious on what basis I judge food tastes on: I am the type of person that tries all sorts of foods from different cultures/ethnicities , and I try different restaurants of each ethnicity just to see how else their food might taste like.My motto is to "go out of your boundaries, explore, and try new things". I am no Chef Ramsay either -- the food doesn't have to be art-perfect, nor do I have to taste all colors of the rainbow. Brought a group of kind people here, and where do I start? Food: Honestly, in this side of town, you can do far better. My chicken's skin still had a lot of the animals hair on it, and that was gross. The flavour was also poor for bbq chicken. Others had variations of the hotpot, and curry. Again, mediocre at best. Especially considering the prices of each of them. This place shines best with it's selection of drinks, but they are overpriced. Huge menu selection, but nothing is perfected. Service: They were not completely rude, but one could not understand English very well and getting the attention of them was quite a challenge, even during non-rush hours. Them finally appearing at our table was miracle. Would be hard to find a reason to tip more than a small percent. Price: Don't go here in a group. We had five, and one just ordered a drink, yet on top of the tax, we had a $20 dollar service fee. Meaning we paid over $30 dollars just to eat there on top of the overpriced food. They also would not allow us to split the check three ways, as it was two couples and another person. This was cause for us spending time figuring out who owed what, with cash or cards, and then having to walk them through how to pay for it. They screwed that up and over charged two of us and under charged the others. It took over 30 mins to deal with this. Final statement: JUST LET US SPLIT CHECKS, and the service fee is a joke. They would not need such a scam had the place been worth leaving a tip for. This place used to be far better in the past. Next time, I will just go spend less than ten at any local place around there, and if you want drinks, go to Honey Bee. I'd rate it one star for all the issues, and agitation caused, along with the service fee, and bad quality of the service itself and the food, but it was not as bad when I just came in for drinks. This place was interesting to say the least. We got there at 9PM for late dinner and were greeted with the standard Chinatown attitude (hostess MIA). At around 9:15, the lights dimmed, and dance music blared. Food was above average price for a Chinatown cafe but their portions were good. I especially enjoyed their plating and glassware. The fried tofu was delicious, but I'd make it a rule of thumb is to stay away from any of their "pickled" side dishes. The chicken with mountain herb hot pot was superb, and the little cup of satay sauce really brought it to the next level. We also ordered a beef dish but it was kind of forgettable...So much that I don't remember the name. Drinks- the yogurt sake was very yummy. Reminds me of those little yogurt soft drinks you get as a kid in Asia. My boyfriend enjoyed the Sakura but it was a little sweet for my taste. The food is decent and the "thing" to get here is their bubble teas/smoothies. I typically get their "Kung Pao Chicken" - now you get a sorta 'bento box' with their entrees because you get a handful of veggies, a bowl of rice, a bite of dessert and your entree. Your entree comes in a slanted bowl, which confuses and annoys some customers. The Kung Pao Chicken is decent. They use mainly dark meat, which is why I'm not a fan. I've tried their Fried Tofu and Calamari, which are both good. They have a Fried Chicken Nugget dish that is something you should order to avoid any disappointment. I ended up coming here way more than I thought I would during my last visit to the Lone Star State. Cafe 101 is the kind of place that is pretty empty from open until about 9 or 10 pm when all the late night denizens of Houston show up. They play horrible electronic club music and have super cheesy flashing lights all over the place. The waitresses are typically dressed in super tight clothing along with low cut shirts and push up bras. Think of it as an asian Hooter's if you will. The only difference is that the food and milk tea concoctions here are top notch. As weird as the name 'wheat germ milk tea' sounds, it ended up being our favorite thing to drink there. We also loved the hot grass jelly drink, which is basically grass jelly heated up until it's in liquid form. As it cools down, it turns into grass jelly. The last drink we kept on ordering was the Longan Date tea. As for food - they do a pretty great job with everything on the menu. We kept on ordering the Taiwanese Basil Chicken nuggets, Satay Beef noodles, Pork Chop, and various seafood dishes. One caveat though - the service here is pretty non-existent. There are about 30-35 tables here and only two waitresses. They don't really try too hard to make sure your food is on time or to even come by your table. Cafe 101 is the place we go if nothing else is open or if we just can't decide on where to eat in Chinatown. It is by no means the place we go to gorge ourselves on delicious food. Before I go into detail as to why, I must say that the service here has always been good. I've never had a bad experience with wait staff here even once. The atmosphere is very lounge like, they have pretty drinks (both alcoholic and not) and a decent variety in their menu. But I have never really ENJOYED a meal here. The food is passable but not AMAZING. Their sizzling kalbi beef plate is the best thing I've had here, including all the drinks and noodle meals and hot pot. I do not recommend the soup/hot pot here at all - don't do it. In short, if you just want a drink or a small snack, this place is good. If you want a great meal, look elsewhere. Also, as this place is always happening (for some reason), you will almost certainly park further away from the entrance but you can find parking unless it's a busy weekend. read more

Like most Yelpers, I come here for the milk tea only. That seems pretty sad if that's the best item on your menu. Cafe 101 is always poppin'. There is always a line and a party of 6 waiting to be served. I've had food here a few times, and I found I their food to be mediocre. I think the sushi is bland and is overpriced for what the taste is worth. Service is always slow, never checks up on tables, and their 'tude needs to go. Let's talk about milk tea. My bf and I love getting milk tea here. The egg pudding is amazing, flavorful, and is giving a lot in your drink. Other tap places do not compare with this place on milk tea because they use the best milk tea powder. When's it's not super crowded, we usually get milk tea there since we get more in their glass cups. The things that bother me about this place is their food, service, and tables. I am not a fan of cheap confetti placed underneath of their glass tables while I'm eating. It looks cheap and desperate to be "festive". read more
