The restaurant offers a lot of seats with a Korean type vibe. The prices are budget friendly, the service is always welcoming, and the food genuinely tastes authentic. Everything I've had here has been delicious!! From the sundubu and bulgogi to their seafood pancake. They also offer a great variety of delicious banchan (Korean side dishes) that enhances your meal. The restaurant seems to be run by the sweetest older Korean ladies, and it's almost always packed which says a lot about how loved this place is by locals. We were seated quickly and our food arrived very soon after we ordered despite the large number of people in the restaurant. As someone who would consider myself extremely well versed in Korean food, I had higher expectations for this restaurant. The banchan were just okay overall. I felt like everything leaned toward a similar flavor profile and the kimchi was a bit overly sweet for my taste. I ordered the seafood soondubu with kalbi, kimchi pancake, and the octopus stir fry. The stir fry was quite sweet and lacked depth of flavor. I was also hoping for a more diverse mix of vegetables. The soondubu was pretty good, but in my seafood version almost half of the shellfish did not open, and the clams that were open were a bit gritty. The kimchi pancake was arguably the best part of the meal, though I wish it had been a bit crispier. Overall, the spot reminded me of Sogongdong, but given the number of strong reviews, I was expecting a more authentic Korean meal with deeper, more balanced flavors. The staff were very friendly and efficient, which made the experience more pleasant. Prices are also very reasonable and not overpriced. On my tour of favorites from Houston before I move, I had to go back to Tofu Village. Love the banchan here, the cabbage kimchi and cucumber kimchi are my favorite. I always get the spicy rice cakes, the sauce is so good and texture is always perfect. As a personal preference I think there is a bit too much fish cake, but again that's only because I'm not the biggest fan of fish cake! Service is very fast, the moment you sit down they bring a house salad to the table (topped with a yummy miso dressing). Not very spicy, but it's more of a sweet savory gochujang based flavor. Nice smokiness. I also love how all the boxes come with a bunch of sides/banchan! The rolled egg is delicious with some bellpepper bits sprinkled throughout. The candied potatoes are sweet. The chicken nuggets are pretty standard, but the box comes with a fried fish which I find to be unique compared to other spots since many don't include this. My favorites are definitely the potato, kimchi, and seaweed salad. Very refreshing and perfect with each bite of meat and rice. Not to mention the side of miso soup. - Beef Bulgogi Lunch Box: The beef is tender and flavorful (albeit less flavorful than the spicy pork). It is a comforting, warming, good staple bulgogi. - Spicy Chicken Lunch Box: Good flavor, but I wish they gave more chicken when I went. At the end, they give you yakult as a little sweet treat ending note! Overall, an amazing meal in Houston that I would recommend. Do note though....they really..really want you to tip. There was lots of table and seating. The server was super sweet and kindly explained and recommended me food option. I order the seafood pancake, jap chae, spicy seafood tofu soup, cha jang myeon, and short ribs. This all came with a bunch of side dishes. My favorites were the seafood pancakes as it was nice and crispy yet still soft then the short ribs were nicely seasoned and wasn't tough to chew. I got their mandu kalguksu and it had some good flavor, but the soup comes out verrrrrrrry hot. Tofu Village has been around here for a long time- it's also been one of my favorites when I'm back in town to visit. I consider it a personal classic :) There's always a nostalgic hit when I come here with my family. Very nice and authentic felt interior, you have Kpop and a mix of other popular music in the background and on a couple of small TVs, and some posters of probably some of the classic idols. I found myself smiling back to the days my friends really pushed Kpop on me (sure, I'm a fan- just not at their hardcore level :P). I always feel so full and fulfilled when I leave. Portion sizes are incredible. Everyone starts with a little salad with their house mix sauce, and you get your rice served in stone pots. There's a constant flowing trail of banchan- I always love their potato, tofu skin, greens, and bean sprouts. I might as well just have listed them all. You can always pick your spice level for your meal, so this place is really for everyone. Service is always on point, quick, and they're kind. I'm always a fan of the short rib combo with the oyster soup at medium. What can you say, a girl likes to taste the sea- and the oysters are at a nice medium plump size. Go hit your protein goals! Super flavorful, they also give you eggs you can crack into the soup- it'll cook cause it's so hot still. Always love their flavorful short ribs, can't go wrong, they're super tender, juicy, and leaves you wanting to finish it all even when you're hitting the brim of being full. Rushed, bad service, and were not treated with respect. we arrived at 8:30 and the restaurant hours online say they close at 10. We were seated and minutes later told to order faster because they're closing their kitchen. I asked why and the waiter says they don't have ingredients for a lot of the dishes. My partner and I order, we get our food. Immediately after getting our food, it's 8:50 and the waiter brings us our check and tells us to leave when we're ready. We continue to eat and although there's people left, the owner and the workers start slamming chairs and plates around us, cleaning right next to us and standing by us to "wait" for us to finish. The owner/manager then comes up to us and says are you ready to pay now?? It's 9:11 and I tell her hey you guys close at 10. She says, oh we close at 9. I say, yeah the kitchen closes at 9 and the restaurant closes at 10. She stares at me and says, alright fine. I say we'll pay when we finish. The whole time after that our experience was uncomfortable. No one asked us if we needed refills, and instead just started joking and laughing amongst each other. Every worker around us was just standing watching us while the manager hovered by to keep checking our receipt. I absolutely hated this place. The food was alright at best for Korean food. I had big chunks of potatoes in the soup, and the tofu was very tender and soft. The beef were thinly sliced, and some were hard to chew or just dry to the touch. Tofu village is such a warm and comforting spot! Been coming to this place since high school. Service and food are still just as good as I remember. I always love the countless side dishes they provide with the meal. They are very generous when it comes to that. I got the bibimbap, and while it was yummy, I feel like the stone pot could've been hotter cuz usually the rice that is directly touching the surface becomes scorched. I didn't get that this time, and I look forward to eating that part the most. It's okay though! The meal was super filling and satisfying. Tofu village is a good place to go with friends. Whenever we're in Chinatown, this restaurant is one of our go-tos. The friendly service, cherry interior and spaciousness, despite the crowd, makes it a nice place to hang out- especially for a pre-karaoke meal. The food itself is very tasty. I like the seafood dol sot bibimbap. I like rice dishes, and the various seafood and vegetables that I get to mix make the dish fun to eat. The meat and seafood is well cooked and the portion sizes are pretty generous for the reasonable price. What really impresses me though, are the side dishes. A variety of kimchi and fish and other sides are given with each meal, which serves to enhance the experience. Our hostess also gave us all complementary yakult yogurt drinks at the end of the meal which were sooo refreshing. Now parking is pretty hard to find, which is a general difficulty with the area. This place does the good for accessible Korean comfort food. I have been here multiple times as it is a staple in Chinatown and I would say it is pretty consistent. The side dishes that come out are satisfactory and nothing special but can fill you up. I would always start off with the Seafood Pancake, it is my personal favorite and it is huge. The Beef Short Ribs are also a favorite as it packs nice smokey flavor and has good amount of meat on it. I also like their cold noodles that they have to offer, it is very refreshing but on the sweeter side because of the daikon. Their combination meals are the most worth it as some of the items can be pricy. The interior is wooden giving off old Asian culture and the waiters get the job done, quick and easy! If you love BCD Tofu House, you have to come here as the food and service is almost identical! Every entree comes with a bowl of rice, lots of banchan, and if you get the split combo, you can get a tofu soup and meat! I highly recommend the LA galbi and spicy pork bulgogi! Cooked and seasoned very well, and we ended up having to take home leftovers because it was so much! Definitely a family friendly place. The restrooms are single occupancy so sometimes you'll have to wait your turn but it is clean. The food is consistently delicious. We always get marinated beef short ribs, seafood tofu soup mild spicy level, Dol Sot Bi Bim Bab, jap chae noodles & chicken skewers. Mild spicy level gives a pretty good kick already. You get a complimentary salad to start then they provide several side dishes which are free to refill and a small fish (careful it has a lot of tiny bones). I was visiting Houston to see the Bears-Texans game on Sunday night. We wanted to eat before the game, so my brother, sister-in-law decided to come to Tofu Village where their son had eaten before with his college friends. He has good taste in terms of what is good Korean food at good value (considering he lived there for many years). Tofu Village is in a large multi-story strip mall, which has a large surface lot. It was pretty full with a few cars always circling to get a good spot. My brother found one, walked a bit to the restaurant and was seated right away. It took us a bit to order, since the menu is large. Each of us ended up ordering our comfort food, since Korean cuisine is something we are all very familiar with. SIL got DolSotBiBimBop ($14.99) - This was the most disappointing part I think. It came with ground beef (instead of bulgogi) but had nice selection of vegetables. The biggest issue is that they had not heated up the stone bowl fiery enough, so it ended up no different if she had ordered the bibimbop in a steel bowl. The result was the the rice had the bottom did not become caramelized/burnt which is the reason she loves this dish so much. The hot sauce was given in a ketchup bottle, so everyone could use it as well. Bro got Non Spicy Pork ($19.99) - Excellent. Initially, I thought the cuts were beef, in that they were so smokey (in a good way) and had been cooked with minimum seasoning to really accentuate the quality of the meat. It was served on a fajita skillet and had been grilled expertly. This is a great dish and would be the perfect filling for Ssam. Nephew got Kimchi ChiGae ($13.99) - it looked good. Kinda hard to mess up chigae as long as you use extra fermented kimchi and good amount of fatty pork. Seafood Tofu Soup ($13.99) - I asked for it mild, and it still had a decent amount of flavor. The dish was good and had plenty of seafood, including two big pieces of oysters. Unlike the bibimbop, this did come with the bowl scalding and the soup bubbling like crazy. With the rice, it's a very good comfort dish for me, and this iteration was fine. We also got a Seafood pancake ($15.99) - It was OK, nothing to write too much about. Our meal came with a ton of extras. - Each person got a small salad: iceberg lettuce leaves, carrot shreds in a thousand island type dressing. - We got well cooked rice in individual stone bowls with a few peas on top...I'm wondering if the rice was cooked in the bowl itself. It's a very nice touch. - The korean side dishes were solid. The kimchi cucumber and napa kimchi were OK. The spicy potato looked like radish, but were instead potatoes and tasty. There was also a croquette looking dish, that none of us tried. Even though there was only 4 banchans, they were all of quality and good places to start for someone who might not have tried them before. - Everyone got a small, battered, deep fried croaker. I was surprised when my nephew finished his...it's kinda of a pain in the ass to eat since you have to pick out the bones for just a small amount of meat. My brother reminded me that that was a tradition when they lived in Korea since most food vendors provide that as a side for a lot of dishes. - At the end, each person got a small bottle of korean yogurt. It does help with digestion, but I've found that as I get older, it can also cause unwanted visits to the bathroom, which could not be afforded if going to a crowded sporting event. I later learned from my brother that the total was around $100, with tip and that there were no additional add-on costs, even though we thought we got quite a few extras. That's nice at a time where a lot of Asian restaurants charge fees for things that were included before. Service was very good throughout. We didn't need refill on banchan, but our water glasses were kept full throughout. And since it wasn't so busy inside, having a conversation at normal decibel was easy.
