This charming café has delicious soups and baked goods made from scratch on site. I usually get whatever savory bun is on offer. They serve La Colombe coffee and make their drinks with care and with pride. If you need a place to work, there are tables, outlets and wifi. The staff are nice. My first time at this cute little cafe! I met a coffee group here. The staff were so friendly and accommodating to our group. It is family owned with a warm, relaxing vibe. The woman who took my order was super sweet and helped me customize my London Fog latte. The London Fog was perfect. Many coffee shops don't put effort into the tea drinks not the case here. Cafe Tolia is such a cute cafe in Old City. I ordered a hot matcha w oat milk and the lady who waited on me - who possibly is also the owner?- she was just the sweetest. She made sure I was going to get what I wanted - since I wanted just a drop of simple syrup. It is not easy to find a good matcha in Philly and I thought Cafe Tolia's was really good. I saw on the board outside that they have lentil soup so I will have to come back at lunch time to order. Overall, it's a great little spot and I'm excited to return. read more

This spot was just okay for me. After tax and tip, I spent $18.28 on just a breakfast sandwich. My friend chose it for a quick bite, and while I knew going in it's more of a café for drinks and pastries than a full breakfast spot, I still expected a bit more for nearly $20. The sandwich itself reminded me of something you'd get at a hotel breakfast the bacon tasted like the pre-cooked kind you find at the grocery store, and the egg had a spongy, square texture. My friend (a vegetarian) ordered the avocado and egg sandwich and was also thrown off by the sponge-like egg, though she enjoyed hers overall once past that part. I was starving after a workout, so I ate mine, but for the price I would've hoped for something fresher. My daughter and I came in here after running some errands. It is rather spacious inside, and the decor is very nice. We only ordered iced latte and matcha lavender latte; both were good. Start to finish an amazing meal. Started with the service. The woman behind the counter was so pleasant and seemed so happy for us to be dining in the cafe that it really set the tone for the whole meal. Lentil soup: Soup of the day. I love that the lentils were whole and not puréed. Came with a nice dipping bread that was perfectly toasted. As were all of the breads! Hearty portion of soup in an adorable bowl. Tolia classic: Admittedly a skosh hard to eat as the meat kept popping out of the bread. This was always going to be a hit. Burrata almost never disappoints and this complementing the rest of the ingredients was lovely. Oven gold turkey: A truly unexpected hit. A small detail but the fact that both top and bottom breads had the pesto sauce was a deal maker. The cheese really just pushed it over the edge. Bomboloni: Chocolate hazelnut filling in the middle. Very savory. Not a huge pastry guy but this was a nice suggestion out of the case of pastries. The space itself is adorable. As a tall person I wish I hadn't chosen one of the short stools but that's my own fault. Plenty of tables. Would definitely come back to try the other sandwiches. read more

I have had their Bombolini Choco Hazelnut twice before and got it again today - as usual it was super soft and filled with a delicious hazelnut filling! I also got their Tiramisu for the first time today and had it with my husband after dinner - we both loved it and think it is on par with all the great Tiramisus I have ever had. We went here to work while we grabbed a coffee, and the wifi was terrible. I know not every coffee shop is made for working, but I would have had better luck trying to connect from my home wifi across town. That being said, the coffee was good, which is what matters. We added a bit of coconut powder and chinnimon, which is a nice option. The atmosphere has some ups and downs. Right out the gate I will concede - This place is pricey! With oat milk, tip and a credit card fee my dirty chai latte came out to $11. With that said - it was a delicious dirty chai (my first!) in a gorgeous whimsical mug. I got a cookie ($5) that was moist and packed with deep matcha flavor. The service was lovely all around- the staff and owners are warm and personable with every customer that comes thru their doors. The interior has plenty of comfortable seating options and convenient outlets throughout if you want to work from here. Could I get a dirty chai or cookie that is comparable at a lower price elsewhere? Yes probably. I really really enjoyed this cafe. This is my first time in Philly. We decided to walk around the historical places in the area and stopped in this cafe for breakfast. It's stunning inside. Everyone is so nice, and food is really reasonably priced! I got a lavender iced latte and a breakfast sandwich. Both were great. The coffee is pretty mild, and pro tip, if you want more flavor you have to ask for 2 shots (the standard is one). I was surprised how filling the sandwich was and the bread was delicious. I didn't eat here but I love the vibe, La Colombe coffee, and super friendly staff. My cold brew was perfection on a gorgeous day exploring Old City and I love the splash they've made in the neighborhood in a fairly short amount of time. The pastry and dessert case looked out of this world. I can't wait to return and try much of their menu - patry included! It's hard to find true cafes that still feel homey and inviting, which is always my preference to the more stark and modern trends that have seemed to permeate cafe culture here in the states. Cafe Toila is a great spot to sit and read, chat with a date, get some work done, or just hang out in a nice environment. Exposed bricks, lovely art on the walls, and clean bathrooms. To accompany our light roast coffee, we each ordered Bombolini: one Bavarian cream, the other chocolate hazelnut. As expected, the La Colombe coffee was excellent. Bombolini were fresh, tender and not too sweet, which is the way it should be. I'm not surprised why this place has 5 solid stars. I think this is the cutest local cafe I've ever been in the city. So clean, well decorated, warm, and homey. With jazz music on the background, you can relax or have a nice time hanging out with friends. The owner was super sweet with lots of smiles. Soft spoken and has pride on her baked goods. She explained well all of my questions. I'm glad to see that there were returning customers, whom she recognized immediately. I went here during my Philadelphia High School field-trip for lunch and I ordered the Tolia sandwich, I think that's name. The cashier lady was so sweet and patient when I was somewhat freaking out about where my money is in my wallet at the register... When I received the sandwich, it was so toasty with a good crunchy outer crust with juicy ham and tangy mustard and sour pickles! I also ordered the soup of the day, and it was a delicious lentils soup solely veggies! The restaurant was so aesthetically pleasing and the music was calming with just instrumental songs. While the ambience and baked goods are decent, the other food is pretty awful. The "avocado" sandwich is flavorless, with more iceberg lettuce than a salad from the 80s, on White bread (no, it's not sourdough), a pasty tomato spread and a theoretical amount of avocado (i.e., it should be there but good luck finding it). It's possibly the worst sandwich I've ever eaten. read more

High on the list of new favorite coffee shops, in no small part because of the home-baked pastries on offer here. A plain bomboloni is a real treat in a city short on yeasted donut-type baked goods, and the perfect complement to a simple but outstanding cup o' drip. Loving the airiness, ample seating (plus plugs!) and the jazz soundtrack. So many coffee shops these days have the indie playlists on and usually pretty loud. I get if that's your thing but I have been jonesing for a coffee shop that has that quieter, more...classic (?) vibe. Especially on a gray, rainy day, it's happily cozy. Food: Got the Tolia Classic without prosciutto and it was a very well balanced sandwich with burrata in every bite, roasted tomato, and arugula. You get hints of fresh garlic as well. The bread was a bit crunchier than I would've liked but overall solid sandwich for a cafe. Also got the strawberry tart, which was not very impressive. While the strawberry compote on top was nice, the crust of the tart fell short. I really wanted to try their donuts but they ran out by 1pm on a Friday. Service: Great service, food is delivered to your table and you can pick up drinks at the counter. Ambiance: So very cute coffee shop vibes. Lots of seating inside with free Wi-Fi Would I go back?
