A young couple has taken over and continued with the classical menu. They are producing some real bangers. Pierogis are amazing. There are several different type. The pierogis were delicious especially when eaten with sour cream and I can tell that those were made with care. The kielbasa with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes were delicious too but I wished that the mashed potatoes had a little more salt or butter in it. The house coffee was fine, and the onions could use a little bit less salt since it was on the saltier side. The inside had a homey and cozy feel to it which perfectly fits the chilly autumn vibe. To make things even better, the owners who run the restaurant are very friendly and went out of their way to initiate a conversation with me. This place is small, adorable, and has the cutest little Polish grandmother in the kitchen. It's like stepping into someone's home rather than being in a restaurant, but the ambiance can't make up for the quality of the food, especially when two appetizers and two mains served on paper plates will cost you $80. The Pierogis and the Gulash were on the better side of the menu, but neither was particularly well-balanced since I wished the Pierogis were less soggy and had more flavor to them, and the Gulash was overly salty. The Polish Crepe and the Golabki were all-around a bit disappointing. The Golabki tomato sauce was sweet with no other real nuance, and the texture of the crepe was like almost like a fried tortilla. I'm not Polish nor am I all that familiar with their cuisine, so I can't tell you how "authentic" this place is. But I can tell you that all the food is amazing. I wrote a book, The Art of Taking it Easy, which was translated into Polish and has been selling very well over there. To celebrate, I thought it would be cute if I popped into a Polish restaurant for some Pierogies for a quick photo. We were traveling the midwest and Google led us to Columbia, which luckily was on our tour. After snapping a few pics, everyone in my party was super pleased with the food and we ordered nearly everything on the menu. And the owner is a wonderful woman from Poland. Small cafe with only a few tables, but a very cute owner, reminiscent of any good Eastern European grandmother. Unsurprisingly, not a great place for vegetarian food, so I can't comment on much of the menu. We tried the borsch (probably vegetarian, but if that matters to you double check, since traditional borsch is made with beef), spinach and cheese crepes, and the pierogis. - The borsch was some of the best I've had. It was served in a styrofoam coffee cup and drinkable, instead of eaten with a spoon, which is a little strange to me, but the broth was deeply aromatic, and the soup very enjoyable - The crepes were quite good! Far from traditional French crepes, but a solid option - I'm conflicted on the pierogis. They aren't the best pierogis I've had, the potato had a bit too sharp of a flavor. My friend disagreed though, and greatly preferred them to the ones we got while we were in a small town in Poland. The farmer's cheese was a very good pairing for them. read more

Pulled up restaurants in the area and saw Cafe Poland, and we don't have a restaurant like that in KC so we decided to try it. Walking in, the restaurant is super intimate and adorable. The lady serving us, who I assumed is the owner (I should have asked!) was so very nice. Awesome prompt and friendly service. My boyfriend and I split the plate made for two that has mashed potatoes, sausage, pirogies, cabbage rolls, and a sauerkraut stew. It was amazing! Such fantastic flavor and so filling. I absolutely loved visiting this quaint little cafe located in downtown Columbia. The pierogi that we ordered was wonderful-- so flavorful and perfect. I ordered the cheese/potato pierogi and fought my boyfriend for every last bite! We also ordered the ham and eggs crepes as well as a strawberry and raspberry crepe. All were very good. The atmosphere in the cafe was very homey. It's the kind of place where you feel that you've stepped into Poland itself just because of the authenticity of the food and the employees working there (polish accents and all). It is a family owned cafe, and the mother who cooks the food is very friendly and happy to visit with you. It was great to see very strict Covid-19 standards during my recent visit. Pirogies are outstanding. If you can't choose which type, they are happy to serve you a mix. Bigos and Golabki are my favorites. Delicious sauerkraut really makes Bigos great here - order the Golabki if you are not into sauerkraut. Had I not consumed a large volume of milkshake in Jeff City (check out Central Dairy) just few hours before stopping here, I would have ordered the Sampler - just about everything on the menu on one plate! Don't be put off by the small size of the place or the lack of modern interior, you are coming for the tasty food and great selection of European beers. Pierogies, Borsch, Gulash, Lecho - it's all good It's about 5 minutes south of interstate 70 with plenty of parking on city streets. Just the best pierogies I've ever had, outside of someone's home kitchen. The Cafe is run by a talented Polish Grandmother who cooks a variety of breakfast, lunch and even dinner items with a sure hand. Family members help out and keep the place spotless and tidy The only thing that drops a star off the rating is their use of disposable cutlery and plates instead of having to wash up permanent ones. I see the reason for saving time and effort but it does take away from the presentation as well as the planet in the long run.
