Enter and park from the back/alley side. Took a minute to figure that out. Cool vibe, lots of living room type chairs and places to sit inside. Coffee was fine. There were cookies and scones, didn't try this time. Wasn't clear where they were from. Barista focused on regular customers. First time visit and felt like an inconvenience between the regulars. Seems like a great place if you are a regular.

Great coffee, solid scones!! Met by the manager and team....they rocked!! What a cool space! My iced Cafe con miel (honey coffee) was !! Really enjoyed the whole experience !! They were roasting when I walked in!!

This review is long overdue. I cannot say enough amazing things about Fretboard coffee. I have been getting their subscription delivery of beans monthly since Covid in 2020 and the coffee itself is the smoothest and best flavors you'll find anywhere (Porch Jam is my favorite)! The house made syrups are incredible (blackberry sage is *chef's kiss*). Dave and the staff are always so welcoming to everyone. Their commitment to being a part of the columbia community is unmatched. And the patio on a nice day is one of my favorite places to be. If fretboard isn't your favorite coffee shop among many many great local ones, you are missing out.

Will say, at first, when I got dropped off by my Uber, I had a lot of confusion. But once I found the little sign showing me where to go, I found myself in a quaint little coffee shop right off the back alleyway. I've only ever seen videos of siphon pots, so I was excited to try and see one made for myself! The barista behind the counter was very nice and told me a bit about the town since it was my first visit. Really enjoyed my visit here!

    I love roasters!

This was a cute and quaint little coffee shop, off the beaten path. In this university community, this is a wonderful little coffee shop though. I love that when we walked in the door, it smelled like fresh ground and roasted coffee. Another nice thing is that the roaster is right there where people can watch what is going on, and see the roasting process. It is part of why it adds that amazing aroma in the building. My go to drink in checking out coffee shops is either a latte or a cappuccino. Here, I ordered a cappuccino. There was nothing overly special about it, however it was delicious. There's plenty of place for you to have workspace, gaming area, or just a place for conversation and coffee. I have added this coffee shop to my "Return to" list. And, as a musical person, the fretboard motif is real cool. As the PastorJavaMan ~ thank you for a great coffee experience.

Small business making great coffee, if you haven't been there you will need to seek & find, but it's worth the search.

Dependable, unassuming coffee. Not much else, but what else would you want? The basement vibe is also unassuming

Cute place but coffee isn't great, way overpriced, and only offer 20-35% tip options.

Shortwave has declined steadily over the past year or so. I used to like them as a decent option with pretty good espresso, not my fave but if you got a solid barista it was a pretty good experience overall. not the case any longer, as the last 3-4 times (spread out over a few months) I have gone it has been worse each time. the espresso is burnt, the steaming if you get a hot drink is usually subpar, and one time I got their beans and they quite honestly already tasted pretty flat and old (off-gassed for 24-48 hrs before use). now here's my biggest frustration, and why I'm done going for good. I had not complained the last few times, even though my lattes or cortados were consistently not great. this time, I got a latte with their autumn spice as last year I had liked it a lot. the espresso was so burnt it genuinely tasted like charcoal, the drink was terrible. I had already left, so I emailed their customer service email which they encourage at the bottom of their receipts if anything is unsatisfactory. they tried to insinuate it might be me not liking the autumn spice syrup, which is quite honestly felt quite undermining. then they essentially dropped off the grid with no offer of a refund. receipts of this email thread attached below. I genuinely should've stopped wasting money on them a while ago, but was overly hopeful that a barista was having a bad day/bar wasn't dialed in properly. this was a very sour end to my patronage at Shortwave.

The staff was friendly and patient with us. The cafe was very clean, bright, and a wonderful place to spend time in. I would agree with other reviews that the portion might be a bit smaller for what you are paying for, but it was still very nice to support a local business that meets the needs of so many who are limited in their choices otherwise. Sadly, I found plastic packaging in my food. My friend also mentioned that her latte came out cold instead of hot, which was disappointing given how cold it was on this particular day. Overall still a good experience and would like to try again! Just a little hesitant for now!
