Come for the canal-side outdoor seating and spectacular view. Stay for the delightful sandwiches and reinvigorating coffee. The biggest draw here is definitely the back patio with ample seating, relaxed and casual ambiance, and an unobstructed view across the Amstel canal. Well, to be fair, our view was partially blocked by a boat tied up to the dock literally next to our table, until the owners of the craft untied and sped off across the water halfway through our meal. I'm reasonably certain the breads on the menu are all fail-proof. We had a ham, egg, and cheese (somewhat like an omelette) with multigrain on the side, as well as a meatball sandwich on brown bread with a side of tasty house sweet chilli sauce. We weren't quite sure how to make best use of the sauce - does one pour it over the sandwich? I ended up deconstructing the whole thing, dipping the meatballs into the sauce, then having bites of buttered bread in between nibbles of protein. It got the job done! Between the convenient location, lovely outdoor atmosphere, and affordable snacks, Café de Jaren is a welcome getaway from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam's city centre. read more

Great place to either have a drink or a coffee, brunch, lunch or dinner !! Located in the center of Amsterdam with TWO terraces facing the Amstel canal is probably one of the best places to lounge.... outside on a sunny day... inside when the weather gets very Dutch. The look is very dutch modern 30's style.... and you can find magazines and papers to read if you are on your own. The restaurant at the second floor had a short menu with essential but well prepared food ranging from vegetarian lasagna to steak and other basic well prepared dishes. I advice to pick the all you can eat salad bar dish as there are a lot of choices of veggies to pick from and hey are always very fresh and nice. The steak is good and also the comfit. The Appeltaart (apple cake) is great... I almost always indulge with one fat slide.. .with Slagroom (whipped cream) !!! Beer is the natural compound for a stop at this Cafe... :) Everyone is very very nice, very international customers and also Dutch. If you get to the toilet remember to take 20/50 Euro cents with you for the lady guarding the restrooms ... she is very nice (elegant) and the restroom are very very clean!! read more

Currently awaiting the chocolate mouse which based on everything else should be wonderful. The warm bread served as we sat was just an added bonus. I've had lunch here twice, soup each time, and the food was decent both times. Nothing spectacular, and don't expect the environment to be gezellig/cozy, 'cause it's not. What's great about this stop is the easy, central location and the outdoor seating (at the back of the restaurant). I can imagine that sitting on the canal on a warm summer evening and having a witte wijn is nice. So... maybe next year! Also, they have a few communal tables in the center of the restaurant that are nice for a group meeting - in case you're looking for a place to have drinks and food while working. read more

I came here for the canal views in the back, and was not disappointed. You can sit right up against the water, watching small canal boats drift by against the backdrop of some pretty amazing buildings. There's also a fairly large interior too if the weather isn't cooperative - I was surprised actually with how much seating there was. The food isn't too shabby either. Big spacious café that is very classy but still low-key. Many seats inside (also upstairs!) and all kinds of drinks and bites. Come here for coffee, lunch, dinner or just drinks. I usually come here to have drinks and hangout after/before watching a movie at Pathe. Also a nice spot for having drinks after shopping. Café de Jaren is a beautiful spot located right next to the water. There are plenty of food options to choose from and enjoy. I ordered the mint tea to start and it was extremely fresh. I ordered the "kip" sandwich which was similar to a chicken curry sandwich. It was really tasty and the bread was nice and crispy. For dessert, they have a number of options to choose from. I ordered the apple tart and banana cream pie. The banana cream pie was super creamy and delicious. The Apple tart was filled with cinnamon notes and raisins that were to die for!! The view from the cafe is beautiful on a sunny day and you can even sit outside! The service is efficient and food comes out pretty fast. Definitely make a stop by this cafe when you are in the area. It's recognized for being one of the largest cafe in Amsterdam.The decor features a stretch out bar with a high vaulted ceiling that gives a feeling of space. It's an ideal place to visit if your lucky to land a seat on the terrace on a sunny day. Often you will find people lounging on the terrace, overlooking boats cruising throughout the canal. Most of the time the terrace is full with plenty of people enjoying this vibrant city. I have never been lucky to grab a seat on the terrace at the right moment. Cafe de Jaren is an oasis for the locals and tourist who are drawn into the center of Amsterdam. This is my favorite place to hang out in Amsterdam between meetings, walks, shopping sprees, or other activities. Its proximity to the university attracts an eclectic and international mix of students and faculty as well as tourists who are adventurous enough to walk half a block away from Damrak and Rokin. With a generous floor plan, a deck and a terrace, a very reasonably priced drinks and food menu, and smart staff, this is an absolutely great cafe for an leisurely stop. I absolutely love this place. This is a perfect place for a bit to eat with friends. The atmosphere here is always 'gezellig'. The staff is very, very friendly and really easy to talk/joke around with. I visit here about once a month either on a Sunday for tea with friends or on a Saturday night after my movie group. They've got great seating options for large groups (like my movie group -- 12 people). One of the best things to do here is sit outside overlooking the canal. This is a perfect place to be on nice sunny afternoons in Amsterdam. However these seats are always taken so you've got to have patience but it's definitely worth the wait. read more

Probably one of my top places to sit down and relax in Amsterdam. It's supposed to be touristy but there's a healthy amount of locals in here as well. The outdoor seating along the canal is a perfect spot to have a coffee or beer, munch on some great food and brush up on your to-do list before heading out and exploring Amsterdam! I don't get the hype about this place at all. The views are great, if the weather is good, otherwise you're confined to the indoor area, which is just terrible. There is not enough sound proofing and the tables are very close together, even for a place this huge. Service is your typical Dutch, which equates to getting served at the server's whim. In terms of dining, they have a better than average salad bar. There are also your staple snacks on the menu. The area downstairs has a longish table where you can typically see people reading stuff or working on laptops, which is a feat in itself considering how sound just seems to reverberate inside. There are many great spots in Amsterdam to get drinks and enjoy company, and this is just not one on the top list. It's great for a once in a while hangout with a large group, though. read more

De Jaren is a wonderful place to enjoy breakfast or a light lunch, preferably on a balmy day, seated on the terrace which overlooks the Amstel where it is joined by the Kloveniersburgwal Canal. But if the terrace is full, and it often is, the interior seating areas are beautiful and spacious. I've never ordered anything much more than the ham, ei en kass with a cup of coffee, but it makes for a wonderful start to the day. Had a lovely experience at De Jaren. As other reviewers have mentioned, the back patio is the place to sit. Spacious with a great view of the canal. Lights in the trees suggest that it can be quite romantic at night. My husband and I went here for breakfast. I ordered the ham and bread with a cappuccino. My husband ordered the bread with eggs, cheese, and ham. I loved the simplicity of my sandwich - the bread was amazingly good. The cappuccino, while scalding at first, had a wonderful taste. My husband's egg dish was on the salty side, but I love salty so I thought it was good. During our breakfast, what appeared to be a rowing team boat appeared on the canal. They team was heading straight towards the restaurant at a fairly high clip! I thought they were going to hit the wall, but they pulled to the side at the last minute, and a couple of the guys jumped out to tie down the boat! The rest of the team got out of the boat. too, and I assume they were going to eat at the restaurant. That's not something you see every day in the US. :) I like it. read more
