When I asked the male sales person how much the enlargement and cleaning would cost, he responded, "Not a lot." Really? This was so unprofessional. Unprofessional Act #2: I had to call to find out when my rings would be ready because no one called me. Unprofessional Act #3. When my husband picked up my rings, the sales woman made a remark about how small the rings/my fingers/hands were. I am an Asian-American woman/mother who has been harassed by many White Women/White Men in Upper Montclair, Montclair, Cedar Grove, Verona & West Orange, NJ for years. It saddens/shocks me to admit the level of racism I have experienced in this area. I was shocked that the sales woman remarked about the size of my rings/fingers after we paid $150.00 to get these rings enlarged/cleaned. The lack of professionalism in Essex County, NJ is disappointing, yet no longer shocks me now that I understand how racist this area is.

I found a few places online that carried the ring my fiance wanted, but Gallo offered the ring for $100 cheaper. I contacted them to see if they could expedite the shipping and to see how much extra that would charge. They were very quick to respond (on a holiday weekend) and sent me the ring 3 days faster than I expected and they didn't charge extra for expediting the shipping. Unfortunately, the experience couldn't have been more disappointing. We had an appointment, but from the moment we walked in, it felt like we were an inconvenience rather than customers. I understand they were busy and accept walk-ins, so I tried to be patient, but there was little effort to engage with us, ask what we were looking for, or make us feel welcome. The biggest issue was the complete lack of flexibility for a business that advertises custom jewelry. I was told getting a permanent bracelet would take 25-30 minutes, which already differed from the estimate on their website. Again, not a huge deal. Then I chose the chain I wanted and was told they don't put charms on that chain. Fine--I was willing to compromise. I picked a different chain and a pre-made charm instead. Once again, I was told they don't normally put charms on that chain either. At that point, I showed the employee one of the many permanent bracelets I already own, explaining that it started with one charm and I'd added others over time. I even said I didn't care if the charm interrupted the pattern or wasn't perfectly centered. I wasn't asking for anything unreasonable--I was simply asking to customize the bracelet I was paying for. Instead of listening or trying to find a solution, I was met with excuses and an argumentative attitude. The conversation felt incredibly dismissive, and I honestly felt like I was being talked down to. There was no effort to accommodate me, no suggestions, and no attempt to make the experience enjoyable. It felt like my business simply wasn't worth the effort. At that point, I walked away without buying anything. Not because they couldn't do exactly what I wanted, but because of how I was treated. For a company built around creating personalized jewelry, the experience felt anything but personal. If your idea of "custom" only applies within a long list of rigid rules, that's something customers should know before making the trip. I left feeling completely blown off, unwelcome, and disappointed. I was ready to spend money, book future events, and recommend this place to friends. The first time I went in, he had an assortment of diamonds and we spent about an hour just looking at them under a loupe with him explaining what everything was that I was seeing. It was extremely helpful! He educated me on different shaped diamonds, GIA vs. EGL and answered any questions i had. John and I discussed all of the specs that were important to me for my stone and brought in diamonds week after week that met those specifications, for me to look at. He also helped me design my setting. I love how honest both John and Mary Anne are. You can trust them a 110% John will always tell his honest opinion. There were times that he preferred a stone that was $2,000 less then a stone I was looking at and would tell me that. Since getting my engagement ring there, my brother has also purchased his fiances engagement ring with them and had a fantastic experience as well. I've also had several rings re-dipped, clasps replaced, necklaces cleaned, watches repaired etc. and everything has come out perfectly. I would highly, highly, highly reccommend Sofia's! Recently I purchased an aftermarket rubber strap for one of my watches from Delugs (online watch…read moreband retailer). The strap had integrated quick connect pins, but wasnt fitting my watch lugs even though Delugs was advertising the strap was compatible with my watch. I went to the watch repair store on the second floor of Macys hoping that they could get the strap and pins inserted, but they werent able to. I did a Google search and came across the highly rated Simpson Watch Service. Reuben (Owner) was able to take the pins that came with the strap out and inserted pins that he already had in his shop. He then took the time to size the strap on my wrist and put together the butterfly deployment clasp (this particular strap was a bit complicated). I was very happy with the end result. I had been annoyed when I first bought the strap and couldn't get it on myself...I was worried I had bought something I wouldn't even be able to pair with the watch and had even contemplated sending the strap back, but Reuben got it. As Reuben was working on my watch we talked about various topics from small businesses like his surviving the Covid pandemic, to his opinion on Tudor reliability, to vintage Omegas...Very rare to find a watch maker like Reuben. Most watch "service" places exist in malls or in a jewelry store where the person there just swaps batteries or if it gets too complicated, they just ship the watch back to the manufacturer...Simpson Watch Service goes way beyond that...Thats evident when you walk in the shop and see the various clocks and watches...I am a believer in supporting small business owners, especially those with niche services like this.
