Are you a 'Roadside-Attraction Specialist'? Well-versed in all things Route 66? Then you are surely familiar with Cadillac Ranch. Wait, you aren't? You are just an Average Joe? Well, relax those weary bones, my friends, because I will introduce you to this famous roadside art exhibit near Amarillo, Texas!
Cadillac Ranch is an art exhibit dating back to the 70s created by multi-millionaire Stanley Marsh III a few miles away from its current location. Consisting of actual vintage Cadillac vehicles nose-dived into the ground; the cars have grown with the times and have become an interactive endeavor where tourists/visitors have turned the cars into a graffiti playground -- but not in a bad way! The reason for the Cadillacs? Several theories exist although Stanley Marsh himself has said it was merely to celebrate the Golden Age of cars in the US.
So, what will you find at this roadside attraction and HOW do you find it? Cadillac Ranch is located off of US 40 on Frontage Road which is the original Route 66 (40 which is known as Route 66 parallels Frontage). When heading west on 40, a simple exit, left turn, and right turn gets you on what looks like a fire road next to empty fields that will scare you that you are heading towards a Texas Chainsaw Massacre-style death. But fear not: your GPS and Google have not led you astray and this is the correct route.
You will find Cadillac Ranch by looking for the metal rod 'entrance' at the side of the road covered in graffiti. There is no parking lot and one must merely use self-discretion to park street-side. Once past the 'entrance', a wide, dirt path leads to the middle of a dirt field and voila: you've made it to Cadillac Ranch!
The graffiti-covered cars loom somewhat eccentrically but with majesty and are a perfect backdrop for social media photos. Tourists can climb inside them, on top, around... whatever your heart desires as there are no guards monitoring the cars. Spray paint cans are sprawled all over the ground filled with paint (bring tips for the cans) or you can bring your own to leave your mark on the cars. In fact, it is encouraged and some tourists have even attacked the dirt field. Cadillac Ranch is basically one large note pad for tagging.
We visited in the dead of night at 11pm not knowing that Texas fields are a tornado-esque wind tunnel at night (holy moly!) so there were no other visitors but I hear this place can get crowded during the day time hours. It was creepy at night, certainly, but still worth a visit.
That's basically it, folks. Nothing more and nothing less than a roadside art exhibit perfect for photos and taking a respite from your car trip on Route 66. Not much time is needed for a visit: 15 min should cover it depending on your photo needs. Cadillac Ranch isn't worth going out of the way for by a worthy and notable stop when heading went on Route 66 (40). Plus, it's free! Can't beat that!
