We went walking around 6th Street on Saturday afternoon. Parking was easily available. There was an abundance of antique stores and restaurant/bars. It was really cold out so we didn't stay long.

Wow.. What a disappointment! I accidentally turned right on Route 66 rather than left... Whew.. I posted the photos of what I saw... Abandon buildings, used car dealer after used car dealer, homeless, chain link fences, no open businesses... It was a little scary... To be fair.. When I finally turned left ( I saw no signs) I found a couple of open antique shops... A lot of the items were buy/ sell from Asia and mostly china... There were a lot of the same items in each of the several stores we went it... We bought a couple of trinkets but nothing to do with Route 66. Almost nothing was open and I was there in the middle of the week, the middle of the day.... Drive on through.. There is nothing to see here, folks... Amarillo really doesn't care about this, what could be, historic area...

It's 98% industrial buildings and car lots, 1% antique stores, 1% cafes or bars. Not worth driving over.

Built in 1959 by high‑school shop teacher HarryWheeler to attract customers to his western-wear store Constructed from steel rebar, wire mesh, and concrete; originally clothed in real Levi jeans and an awning‑fabric shirt Due to high winds, traffic rerouting, a truck hitting his boot, and even his cigarette being shot off, Tex fell into disrepair through the decades. It's free and open 24/7, located just off US60 with parking, paths, historical signage, and a small park--ideal for a quick stop TexRandall is wonderfully oddball and iconic--a testament to Texas pride and roadside Americana. A+ Nice War Memorial Park for the City of Amarillo. There's a lot to look at here. I heard about it…read moreby accident online after I'd been in town for over a month I decided I wanted to go see it so I went the very next day. I took lots of pictures which I will try to remember to post when I finish my review. Because I didn't know my way around, I parked on a side street when I could have pulled into a little parking lot they have on the south side. Next time I'll know. The first thing I passed by was a jet propped up on a stand. I think it was from the Vietnam era but I'll have to check my information to be sure. Across the way there was a helicopter which definitely was from the Vietnam era. I think I would have known that even if I hadn't read it because I saw it on the news and in movies for the past 50 years. As you walk up a little walkway there are benches and bricks that have names of veterans and when they served. There are also large stones that list all the men from the Panhandle area who died in each War right up to the present. I skimmed through all the names even though I didn't expect I would know anyone. I encountered another grandmother who was there with her two grandchildren and we sat on a bench and talked for while as the children played. The conversation was so interesting it became dark before we knew it and we realized we were being eaten alive by mosquitoes. Naturally that was the one time I had forgotten to put on mosquito spray because I hadn't been having much problem lately. We all ran for the cars so my visit was over but it was nice while it lasted. If you live in town or are coming to visit I would say it was definitely worth coming to. I was there late enough in the day that the little Museum or information room was closed. I should try to go back sometime early enough to go inside and see it. All in all, the visit was well worth the Stop and I recommend it to others. Children might be too young to truly appreciate it but it couldn't hurt to get them started understanding that there were Wars, that local men went to fight in those Wars, and that some didn't return. We should honor those men.

Can't say enough about the volunteers here. You can tell they are passionate about this place…read more They took a good bit of time out of their day to show us around and explain some of the displays. The outdoor displays are equally as impressive. The entire complex is a fitting tribute to the men and women who fought for our freedom. THANK YOU!!!!!

Being a native Texan who moved to Colorado in '99, I had driven by this place for years, going from home to home for holidays and other occasions. Finally, I took the turnoff. I don't guess I really knew what to expect when I arrived. There were cars parked along the road, running up and down a field with a paved path leading to an open plot. And then, they were. 10 cars buried at a steep slope, dripping in puddles of color, stand stark in the West Texas flat, dry dirt. It's weird. It's hokey. It's one of the most Texas things to ever be in Texas; I love it! If you like roadside attractions, this is totally worth the turnoff. If you're driving to or from Texas to Colorado, just do it. It's a fun solo excursion. It's a fun family excursion. There's something about adding to the paint and joining the living history of paint upon paint, upon paint. Only in Texas...
