There is no visitor center. It is not a destination. It is a unique stopover on your Route 66 Chicago to Santa Monica journey. It is worth the price of admission (free) and a photo op. Being a native Texan who moved to Colorado in '99, I had driven by this place for years, going from home to home for holidays and other occasions. Finally, I took the turnoff. I don't guess I really knew what to expect when I arrived. There were cars parked along the road, running up and down a field with a paved path leading to an open plot. And then, they were. 10 cars buried at a steep slope, dripping in puddles of color, stand stark in the West Texas flat, dry dirt. It's weird. It's hokey. It's one of the most Texas things to ever be in Texas; I love it! If you like roadside attractions, this is totally worth the turnoff. If you're driving to or from Texas to Colorado, just do it. It's a fun solo excursion. It's a fun family excursion. There's something about adding to the paint and joining the living history of paint upon paint, upon paint. Only in Texas...

Cruising down the highway outside Amarillo, I caught sight of something that made me hit the…read morebrakes--a towering cowboy frozen mid-stride, rifle in one hand and a steely stare aimed at the Texas sky. Meet the Second Amendment Cowboy: part roadside legend, part fiberglass icon, and all swagger. He stands tall beside a trio of jacked-up Cadillacs, each one decked out with mannequin passengers like Elvis, Willie Nelson, and John Wayne on their way to a honky-tonk showdown. It's wild, weird, and absolutely wonderful. I couldn't help but laugh -- it's one of those places that feels like Texas decided to bottle its personality and plant it in the dirt for everyone to gawk at. I snapped a photo, gave the cowboy a nod, and drove off feeling like I'd just shaken hands with roadside Americana at its most bold.

So maybe come in the afternoon if you can when the sun will be on his face. Located just down the road from the Cadillac Ranch, this is a quick drive by photo op if you don't have a lot of time, or pull over for some close-up pics. Happy motoring!

This marker is located on the grounds of the Potter County Courthouse. The county seat of Potter…read moreCounty is Amarillo. The marker is in excellent condition. I'm not sure if this is the original from 1970 or if it's been replaced. The marker reads, "Named for Robert Potter, Secretary of the Navy (1836) and Senator (1840-42) of the Republic of Texas. In territory ranged by Apache, Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche, and Kiowa Indians, and since 1600 familiar to Spanish military parties and French traders. On established routes of the Great Spanish Road from Santa Fe to San Antonio (1786) and the Fort Smith-Santa Fe Trail of 1840 which was followed in 1849 by California gold seekers. Although still uninhabited, the county was created in 1876 by Texas Legislature. The years 1874-78 saw Indians expelled and buffalo replaced by longhorns. In 1877 the famous LX Ranch was established, with headquarters 20 miles north of this site. The Frying Pan, first large ranch fenced with barbed wire, in 1881 built its headquarters 16 miles to the west. Railroad construction across the Texas Panhandle made local government desirable. LX and Frying Pan cowboys were the electors who voted on Aug. 30, 1887, to organize Potter County. This county was discovery site (1918) of the vast Panhandle-Hugoton Gas Field. It is noted as location of Alibates National Monument (established 1965), an aboriginal flint quarry, with ruins of prehistoric Indian villages inhabited as early as 10,000 B.C. (1970)." This is a beautiful old building built in 1910. The railroad went through Amarillo until 1979…read moreaccording to the guy I talk to at the Railroad Museum east of town. Actually the railroad still goes through because there was a train chugging past the train station as I was taking pictures, but the passenger service ended in 1979. Now all that is available are cargo trains going through. I would have loved to be able to get close to the building and see it, better yet to be able to go inside. I hope they turn this into a museum someday. It would be a shame for it to ever be torn down. How can we preserve our history and our heritage if we destroy it? I'm glad I heard that this building was still here so I could at least park in front and take pictures through the fence. If you like old trains there is a locomotive a couple blocks over called the Madame Queen, near the Civic Center. It is fenced-in also but still interesting to look at. And if you really want the scoop, go visit the Railroad Museum east of town, just off of Amarillo Boulevard. Those guys can tell you anything you want to know about the Amarillo railroad history. Be sure to check their hours before you drive out there. It's all volunteer so they are not open everyday.

This is a cute little local post office but the emphasis is on the word little. I came to it…read morebecause it appeared to be the closest one to where I was and I needed to weigh a package and print out postage for it. Unfortunately this location did not have either a scale or a self-serve machine so I was unable to do it. I just drove back over to the Ross Street post office that I have been to before. They are a much larger post office and have both scale and the self-serve machine so I was able to weigh my package, print out a label for it and send it on its way.
