My tenant reported that the air conditioning had stopped working, so my property manager called Cactus Mechanical Inc. to diagnose the problem. After their inspection, they told me the blower motor had failed and quoted approximately $1,600 for the repair. Fortunately, I was able to contact the original contractor who installed the AC system just over a year ago. They came out to inspect the unit and found that two power wires had been pulled loose and disconnected. After reconnecting those wires, the air conditioner immediately began working normally. No blower motor replacement or additional repairs were needed. Based on my experience, I recommend that anyone receiving a major repair estimate on an HVAC system consider getting a second opinion before authorizing expensive work--especially on a relatively new unit. After having 8 local and national companies come out and give ridiculous quotes for a new AC/Heater Pump, we were referred to Cactus Mechanical by our roofer. Thank God!! They were the only company in town that sold us only what we needed and not the most expensive unit they could hook us into. And I tried... After our quote I set the bait and trap mentioning I had extra money budgeted and what if we upgraded to.... We were referred to Mark, owner of Cactus Mechanical, through a mutual friend when soliciting several bids to replace two 3-ton split-gas A/C systems in our 15-year-old home. Mark is one of the most down-to-earth, honest, and patient A/C contractors you'll ever have the pleasure of working with. Their "best pricing first" is fair (not so cheap that you'll think he's cutting corners, but not sticker-shock high either), the equipment options are a great value (they use the sister brands of major labels that come with the same quality without the brand-name markups), and he's proud of the fact that he pays his guys well to ensure they stick around. When bidding on the job, he also identified a common installation problem from the home builder and offered to correct it during the replacement, improving airflow to a couple of hot rooms. Beyond that, he didn't pad the invoice with unwanted thermostats, maintenance contracts, or high-end systems that offered poor ROI for the time we expect to remain in this home. Because his distributor's pricing improved during the bid process, he was able to revise the quote and pass some significant savings onto us. When the time came for install, one of the two outdoor units arrived at his shop slightly damaged by a forklift. He was quick to let us know and gave us the option of splitting the install or doing it all at once. We took the option to replace one of the two systems which were inoperative to ensure we'd be comfortable as the spring temperatures were forecasted to climb, then replace the other functional system a week later when the replacement arrived at his distributor. For the actual install, from start to finish, his crew was efficient and performed quality workmanship. Each of the two 3-ton split gas A/C and furnace systems we replaced in our home were removed and replaced in an average of 4 hours each, including puling new thermostat wire to my two ecobee 4 thermostats to properly support two-stage operation (not the easiest job since the wire wasn't readily accessible). From initial contact to job completion, Mark personally kept us in the loop with scheduling, equipment delivery status, and work completion times, and I never once felt uncomfortable or "in the dark" with the work or what was going on. Every install requires photos to add to the customer file to ensure the job was done right the first time. He was onsite at the start of the first job, and the completion of the second. I would highly recommend considering Cactus Mechanical for any residential and commercial HVAC job in the valley (they do a lot of radio and cellular tower cooling systems too). I was referred to this company by a neighbor. I called and talked to the receptionist who took all my information and said someone would call back to set the appointment. After two days, I did not hear from anyone; so I called again and spoke to the same receptionist, who again referred my information to someone (the comfort specialist?) who she said was in the office. That was on August 11, 2023. STILL, no communication from this company. My advice ... do not waste your time contacting Cactus Mechanical. They clearly do NOT want your business as they do not even have the courtesy to return your call. read more

The AC on our rental property could not keep up with the July '23 heat wave. We have used Cactus Mechanical for several years on both our residential home as well as the rental. An experienced technician was there in the afternoon with a documented repair quote provided within minutes. The repair demonstrated the unit was not large enough to perform in the intense heat on a historic home. We decided to replace the 17-year-old unit as the company applied the repair cost to the install. Since in the middle of a heat crisis, the challenge of scheduling was overcome by a resourceful team including one of the owners who was the last off the roof. Mike came out and within an hour my AC was working. Turns out it was the condenser motor, thank goodness it wasn't the entire unit. We used these same guys when they were also known as Desert Sands LLC. We found these two brothers at the home show years ago. We had them replace our original AC unit in our Scottsdale home, which was a lot more work then they bargained for. When they replaced the old unit in the attic, they had to rebuild the area where the new AC unit would sit. They really went above and beyond and never charged us extra for the time, labor or materials. We have since then moved to East Mesa and bought a new house. We had them come out a year ago in May to add an additional AC unit in the garage, so we could work out. This was during Covid, so we were building our own gym since all gyms were shut down. We got a few quotes first. Some quotes were crazy high. I did some research before hand and knew what it would cost or should cost. Catcus Mechanical's quote was right in the ballpark. I also knew they did great work, so I wanted to hire them again. Once again, they did great work for a fair price and didn't disappoint me. However, last month the AC in the garage was not cooling off like it should have. It was slowly progressing until it just stopped cooling the garage at all. Unfortunately, we were a month over our 1 year warranty. They came out very quickly and told us there would be a service fee just to come out. Who knew how much it would cost to fix the issue, but we needed it done regardless. Apparently, there was a slow leak that was causing the problem. The technician spent a few hours fixing the problem and said he would only charge us the service fee, since we were so close to the year warranty. We were so happy and grateful. We left for vacation a day later for 3 weeks and then started working out in the garage when we got back home. It seemed to take the garage a few hours to cool off, which was much longer than last year in record high temperatures. So, we called them to come back out. Again, they were out within a day and it was the same guy who fixed it a month ago. He ran diagnostics, which were fine and he called the AC manufacturer and they said it was running the way it should. The issue was due to the humidity. We had a very dry summer last year, but this summer is very humid. They said we would have to let the unit run a few hours to get the desired temperature in the low 70's. They didn't charge us for another service fee or diagnostic check, which again was great customer service. We have let the AC unit run longer in the garage and it did seem to circumvent the problem. I would definitely recommend these guys to anyone. They have great customer service, have family values, and great work ethics. I will use them again if we ever need our AC worked on in our house or garage in the future. read more

Watch your cost estimates, as these folks charged my house $454.00 for replacing a run capacitor on my A/C. I'm a firm believer in paying a man a fair dollar for his time but $454.00 is obviously absurd for a $20.00 capacitor, one hour travel and one hour repair. read more

I made an appointment with Cactus Mechanical last week to have my AC unit checked/tuned up. I was told they would call me 30 minutes prior to their arrival, so I needed to take a day off work to be home. The day of the appointment arrives and instead of getting a call saying, they were on their way they call to tell me they have to cancel because of a high level of broken AC units. I completely understand and appreciate they are focused on getting AC units back up and running before doing any regular tune ups. However, they should have called a day earlier to inform me they had to cancel so I did not have to take a day off work. Potential customers call a day before your service to verify Cactus Mechanical will show up. Otherwise, you may be sitting at home for no reason. read more

Scheduled some service for a listing of mine a week in advance. An hour before our scheduled appointment, they called me to ask if it would be possible to schedule it for another day. I had explained that I had gone to great lengths the day after Christmas to make sure it was done on this day, which is why I had scheduled it a week in advance. They said okay, they would come at our scheduled time, which was 1:30. At 2:30, they still haven't come, so we called to see what was going on. They said they would check, and call me back. A few minutes later, a technician called me and said he was "on his way" but was 45 minutes away. So basically, they were going to be about 2 hours late for our appointment that they had confirmed an hour before the scheduled time. I appreciated that their markup price wasn't ridiculous like the other company I called. I had a bid from a competitor and whenI called Cactus Mechanical, I told them what exactly I needed and the cost was way different. In fact, when I told the first company what Cactus Mechanical was bidding, his response was "well what if I can do it for that" that phrase spoke volumes on what the integrity was of Cactus Mechanical in comparison to the other company. Pete arrived on time, checked out the unit and informed me a few parts needed to be replaced. He stated he would order those parts immediately and would schedule an install date. 1 week later (again very convenient for me) Louie came out on time with the new parts, installed same and tested the unit in 1 hours time. I cannot tell you how much I regret hiring Cactus Mechanical to work on my AC in mid August. The only reason I called this company was because the Cactus Mechanical name and phone number were on the thermostat and I thought this might be the problem when the temperature of the house started going higher and higher. Had I had time to research this company, I would have noted that there are little or no positive online reviews and I wouldn't have scheduled an appointment. I was told when I called that the service fee was $84, but would be waived if they did the work. That fee was not waived and was simply, a lie. Greg and Mike (co-owners of this small company) were both polite, but to be told by Mike that the repair could could have been $2000 and that another company would have charged much more and that the next thing to go might be a $400 fan and that even though the repair parts were guaranteed for a year, I would still have to pay a service fee and labor if something went wrong with the parts. This was intimidating! Cactus Mechanical was one the worst AC companies I've dealt with. Even when I tried to contact them through the "contact us - comments" section of their website, it didn't go through and when I asked to be sent a more detailed invoice of the work that was done, they said they couldn't. Hoped to support small local businesses but this didn't seem to happen. I won't use Cactus Mechanical again. read more
