I look back at the next several stops that I made after shopping at Crocs and having consumed a bunch of carbs at a wonton and noodle eatery. It looks like I went on an eating spree! I originally wanted a drink. I was in front of Cacao 70. I had never been to any of its franchises in my life. It was time to check this one out. This dessert place is next to a plant store. Deadly for someone who loves plants and chocolate. I was immediately greeted by a young man. He said to sit anywhere that I'd like. I chose a table with four chairs. My bag with my new pair of Crocs occupied one of them with my purse. I sat down and got menus from the man. There were a couple of men, it looked like a dad-son duo, sitting by the window. They ordered a bit ahead of me and pretty much wolfed down everything. I asked for water. I got cold water in a glass carafe, along with a glass. This water alone hit the spot. I ordered an iced mocha from the menu first. It's a mom-son duo running the show. They speak Cantonese. I overheard their conversation attempting to secure a used stove over the phone. What caught my attention on the menu was doing a fondue for one. Although I wasn't dying to eat anything, dessert time with fruit seemed perfect. I chose dark chocolate as my classic chocolate fondue. The dunkable items that accompanied the fondue consisted of chocolate brownie bites, classic waffle bites, and fruit (bananas, strawberries, and pineapple). The iced mocha was awesome. I heard it being blended in the kitchen before it came to me. It was cold, and had the best balance of coffee and chocolate flavours. It does have dairy in it. I thoroughly enjoyed having a fondue hour on a Thursday afternoon. The fruit was fresh and the perfect size to dunk into the dark chocolate. The sheen on the dark chocolate was impressive. This place does chocolate fondue superbly. There is something zen about dunking fruit and other goodies into dark chocolate with a fondue fork and indulging in each coated morsel. The dark chocolate was perfect. It wasn't bitter. It wasn't sugary. It was exactly how I like dark chocolate, but in fondue form. The chocolate brownie bites made you feel like this fondue experience was fancy. Chocolate on chocolate on chocolate. The bites had a crispy exterior that held the softer interior together as you dunked it into the fondue. So good! The waffle bites were equally as cool. It was like having chocolate waffles, but better and without any maple syrup or whipped cream. I paid at the counter with a credit card. It also allowed me to tip. I let the man know that everything was delicious, which he appreciated. This place didn't have air conditioning, but cool air did circulate well. There was a fly around, which was the only annoying part of the experience. I used the washroom before I left. It was a single stall that was clean. It's to the left of the counter when you walk up to it. I loved being here. I really should visit Cacao 70 more often. I'm so glad that my first experience at one was in Ottawa. (314) read more

Went for the first time with my girlfriend to the Byward Market location. The website made it look so amazing. Turns out we can only give it 2 stars because of a few too many negatives! 1. We noticed it wasn't busy yet we waited 45min for our food. 2. A couple that arrived after us got their food before us. 3. The waffles were room temp, not hot. Worst service ever! When we walked in today I wondered why it was so quiet at 1:00 on a Sunday. There was no one else there, which made the bad service even more unbearable! We were ignored. I found this establishment on Instagram when I was trying to find places when I was in Ottawa in late May. My best friend and I went there for breakfast the next day, and luckily it is placed in the popular side of downtown Ottawa in Bayward Market. We were greeted right as we entered the door and ushered to an open table quite quickly which was great because it was still the morning hours where people like to get breakfast. Their menu has a large variety of what you can order as the possibility seemed endless. I ended up getting the Black and White waffles and a hot chocolate. The food plating alone is 5 stars because it is so beautiful when you receive the meal and you feel bad for ruining such beautiful plating. My only complaint is that the hot chocolate is extremely sweet, so order that beverage with caution. After a couple sips of the hot chocolate I would have to take a few sips of water to settle it down. Overall it was a wonderful experience and the wait staff had everything out in a timely manner and was friendly. I would go back for those amazing waffles that is for sure. read more

The American hot cocoa was a 2 star for me. Sure, it was thick and kind of rich in texture. However, the flavor was not what I was expecting. It's different than the typical hot cocoas I'd get in the states. I think it's the after-taste. It seemed a bit watered down or something. It must have to do with the fact that I asked for semi-sweet. The point is, I didn't like it. I liked the huge marshmallows drizzled with chocolate syrup though lol. Between the five of us, we ordered 2 crepes, 1 fondue platter, a sharing plate for two, a panini, and 1 large milkshake. Our experience was wonderful as always because of how delicious our treats were. My boyfriend and I got a sharing plate for two ($25) and split a Ham Panini ($8) as well. Our sharing play came with a waffle, chocolate coated ice cream, marshmallows for grilling, chocolate fondue with fruit, hot chocolate, and chocolate coated cereal. Every desert item was sweet and at the perfect temperature. The fruit we were given was also very fresh and sweet. As well, the panini was surprisingly very well made for a desert place. The only complaints we had at the end of the meal were about the service and the lack of chocolate for our fondue. We ran out pretty quickly of chocolate fondue and unfortunately as our waitress was no where to be found, we never got a chance to order more. The service this morning was good; the waitress who served us was kind and it didn't take long at all for our orders to be taken and the food to arrive. My boyfriend ordered a ham, scrambled egg, and cheese crepe while I went for French-style crepes with maple syrup and we both had small sides of fruit with chocolate as well as an extra order of sausage and bacon. It all sounded great in theory, but the crepes were lacking in flavour, the sausages were dry and bland, and I was almost insulted when I saw a lump of microwaved bacon sitting on one of the plates that cost us an additional $3.50. After the meal, I confronted the waitress about my bacon dilemma, where she confirmed my suspicion. However, they gave us a discount on the meal because we were rather dissatisfied. Have been to Cacao70 twice now. It's a great place for desserts, the décor is cute and it's in a good location. My boyfriend swears by their chocolate & raspberry milkshake. He isn't the type that likes sweets and he rarely ever asks to go somewhere twice, but we returned the 2nd time at his request. I tried the fondue with fruits, brownie and waffle. The chocolate was very smooth and delicious. It was as expected. My favorite though was the hot chocolate. You are given a cup with melted chocolate in the bottom and a container of steamed milk. Pour that steamed milk into the melted chocolate cup and have a careful sip. HEAVEN!! I don't know how I can ever have hot chocolate any other way or anywhere else. My only complaint is the service. The waitresses we have had both times were not as friendly as they could be, they seemed lost and confuse more than anything else and they barely ever checked on us, even though the place wasn't all that busy both times. Cacao70 could definitely improve on their customer services, with training their waitresses even just a little. Otherwise, everything else was great! Yesterday we drove down all the way from Barr-Heaven to the Byward market after dinner for desert and we were there at Cacao 70 - William st by 21:35 but the staff refused to serve us saying kitchen is close. Official closing time is 10 PM and even flashing time indicator was showing it closes at 10:30 so this place is not trust worthy now. Inform their supervisor about timings that if you don't entertain the customers in given time then better change store timings of your website so that we will not be disappointed. read more

Cacao 70 prides themselves in using various varieties of chocolate for their desserts from S'mores to Crepes to Belgian Waffles to the classic Chocolate Fondue. A good chunk of my friends came here and they all enjoyed it quite a lot. The ambiance was nice and our server was helpful and there at all the right times. We tried a milk chocolate milkshake which was unbelievably delicious. It was easily my favourite part of the meal. We also ordered the 64.5% Costa Rica. This was a bit too dark and heavy for me, it was literally pure chocolate and I barely finished a quarter of it before taking the rest to go. It's very very very chocolate-ty so keep that in mind when ordering other chocolate dishes! The grilled marshmallow order was great, except you really have to take care not to catch your marshmallow (or your sleeve) on fire! The fact is that on an "on day" this Cacao 70 location can really nail you right in the sweet tooth (in a good way) with it's awesome dessert and food selection that ALSO comes with good service. (I said good, not great, and not excellent because I had never had "blow me away" service there). Unfortunately on an off day this location can also have slow, inattentive, and incompetent service. I once asked a staff member there if everything was alright as he looked particularly troubled and to my shock his answer was "no, it's very very busy tonight". Well, being a location right in the heart of Ottawa's Byward Market, this location *needs* to step up in terms of its preparedness for busy times.
