The restaurant turned out to be unlike any other that I've ever been to. When I say, "one of a kind", I mean it. I'll try to describe it, but I'm sure I'll fall a bit short. The restaurant looks like a crazy jumble of different furniture, fairy lights, and inside and outside seating. Even the inside seating, though covered, is open to the outside patio. The same owner, originally from the Boston area, is still the operator. You enter from the back parking lot. Definitely no need to stand on ceremony or dress up here. There's a large screen TV on the outside patio and it looks like they have music there occasionally, as well. Service was wonderful. Very personable and welcoming. And the bar, is self service (!), You help yourself to soda, or beer or wine, or whatever you wish to drink. At the end of the meal, they ask you what you had and they add it to your bill. Talk about a true honor system. The dining part is slow paced and leisurely. This is not the place for a fast food meal. A little while after we ordered, we were given two small plates with seasoned grilled swordfish pieces along with a chili dipping sauce and several pieces of ahi tuna to share. This was complimentary. And a while later we were given a large plate of lightly battered fried vegetables along with another dipping sauce -- also to share and also complimentary. After another bit, we received some wedges of pita bread along with a peanut dipping sauce (another comp appetizer) to share. For our main entrees, we had between us: crab cakes, soft shell crabs, a seafood casserole, and fish (scrod) and chips. Dishes came with potato wedges or pasta. We all liked what we ordered. For dessert, we were given "Irish" cannoli -- a sugared cannoli topped with lots of whipped cream -- that was sweet and yummy. Again, complimentary. The server brought out shot glasses to give each of us an after-dinner cordial that was a secret blend made by the owner. So if you're up for a one of kind evening, and you're laid back and mellow, you will thoroughly enjoy this unusual and addictive treasure of a venue. This is another "keeper" that I hope is still there the next time we are in town.

Monkey Bar Steak & Seafood…read more First Impressions I stopped by specifically for the prime rib after hearing it was among the best in the area. Since no one was seated inside, I chose the patio. Although it was less formal than the dining room, it had a great atmosphere. One drawback was that smoking is allowed at the bar, and the odor carries into the patio area. My beer arrived quickly, but I had to flag down the bartender to place my food order. With only about eight customers in the restaurant, I expected more attentive service. I also noticed the bartender checking his phone frequently. What I Ordered * King-cut end piece of prime rib, cooked medium-well * Mashed potatoes * Mixed vegetables My Thoughts The prime rib was enormous, cooked perfectly to medium-well, and very flavorful. The mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables also tasted good. Unfortunately, the temperature of the meal was disappointing from the first bite. The center of the prime rib was cold, while the edges were only warm. The mashed potatoes were also just warm. Only the mixed vegetables and au jus arrived hot. Given the restaurant's reputation, I expected more consistent service and hotter food. Overall, I give Monkey Bar Steak & Seafood three stars. Gulf Coast Terry

Today was our 42nd wedding anniversary and we decided to give the Boathouse a try From the moment we sat down and Eimmy came to take care of us. It was like magic. She was sharp, friendly, gave great attention to small details. Obviously knows her job and loves it. Our food was cooked to perfection. We had a small few request and each one was done perfectly. Eimmy checked on us without hovering. There was great music being played, but the speakers were up high so you can hear that but you still hold a conversation. I wish I could give them more than five stars because today they hit it on every single level for a great anniversary meal. As we were leaving, we mentioned to her that it was our anniversary and she said you hold on one moment pick a free dessert. It's on us. Island eats are meant to be enjoyed on island time - without a rush, in good company, and in the sun. I've been coming to RC Otters since I was a little kid and rented the house down Andy Rosse lane by Mucky Duck. It used to be one of our treats to eat there for breakfast instead of at our house during our summer vacations. This past visit - we missed the breakfast cut off and had lunch there. I opted for the grouper sandwich. Something about a fish sandwich on an island is just luxury to me. They offer it grilled, blackened, bronzed, or fried. Bronzed sounded intriguing to me which is a mix of savory with a hint of sweet. Wow. It was awesome. I also ordered a bloody mary which was delicious. My sister in law got the ribs and loved them. Everyone else got the fish sandwich. Service is so friendly, and they usually have live music going on. A great, affordable place to enjoy a meal. They also have a lot in front for parking, but it's very walkable if you're staying in a house nearby or even the south seas resort.

With its multi-colorful exterior it makes you feel in vacation mode just looking at it. They have an equal amount of indoor an outdoor seating, and we opted for outdoor when we came for breakfast. RC Otters is open the earliest of the few restaurants on Captiva, aside from Starbucks if you count that. All of the standard breakfast offerings were on the menu, plus a special of theirs is a breakfast sandwich that's an omelette wedged between two pieces of french toast. Kind of fun. The food was good, nothing stellar but it was decent. It was altogether an enjoyable morning with the colorful setting. They are open all day for other meals so can't speak to how the lunch or dinner food is, but we enjoyed the breakfast.

Ordered the roasted beet salad for my next course; i have NEVER had a beet salad served warm, but i can't imagine eating it any other way. red & gold roasted beets, warm, topped with arugula in a citrus vinaigrette, sprinkled with goat cheese. for dinner i selected the n.y. strip special, cooked perfectly rare, served with pan sauteed mushrooms, spinach and creamer potatoes. we also had the cioppino; a crock of fresh seafood & shellfish in a rich tomato broth. i thought it should have been served with some bread to mop up all that delicious broth. learned later that it should have been served with grilled crostini, according to the menu, but the kitchen neglected that detail. that would be my ONLY complaint. otherwise, it was a special dinner, beautiful restaurant with lovely views. would HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone looking for a wonderful night out with plenty of delicious food & excellent service.

The manager came by and we asked him. He said it was good, but that he would check with the chef. The head chef wasn't there, but the sous chef gave note to the manager. The manager insisted that it was okay. He never said that gluten-free soy sauce was used. I'm pretty sure it's not, because I'm sick today. Frankly I'd skip this place next time, although the ambiance and views are stunning, and the wait staff was very attentive.
