Glasses are a necessity to my daily life, and with my high prescription, it is essential that I get the right frames, lenses, and correct prescription. I've been going for several years now, and Dr. Poon is simply the best! His exams are thorough and affordable (even without insurance), he explains everything clearly, he is friendly and professional, and he goes above and beyond with customer service every single time. Truly - the customer service is fantastic, which is why I go back to him every year despite the fact that there are many other options in the area. Plus, they accept VSP Guardian insurance. Most importantly, he gets my prescription exactly right, and the lenses are cut perfectly and are very high quality. I recently ordered prescription sunglasses and the frame was a bit wonky once they put the lenses in. They sent the frame back to be fixed and had them to me in a week or so. If for any reason you have an issue, they address it quickly and without hassle or extra cost. They also have a great selection of high quality frames from Japan, Europe, and the U.S., and guide you toward the right pair. And, the vibe is very modern, minimalist and pleasant. Disappointed in the service/attention I've received at c2020. I love their collection and range of options, but there was an issue with the coating on my lenses on the very first pair that I bought here (I bought two pairs in quick succession - regular and sunglasses, both prescription ) and C2020 was not able to advocate on my behalf with whatever lab they work with. Even though I am not a customer of this place, they let me get my pupillary distance for free!!! I called 3 other optometries and they all charge for measuring PD. This doctor Poon ruined my life. I would give him less than one star if I could. I went to the John Muir ER, back in 2014, with partial blindness in my left eye. The ER doctor called Poon to consult with him. The damn lazy a**hole wouldn't even come in to examine me. They sent me home, with a diagnosis of blurry vision (I know why) with no solutions on a weekend. By the time I saw an opthalmologist, it was too late. I had a BRAO, Branch Retinal Arterial Occlusion. My eyesight was permanently lost. I should have sued him for negligence, but I was up too ill with Autoimmune Diseases, including the one that caused my sight loss, Uveitis. I should have immediately been put on a high dose a steriods, which might have saved my sight. I warn you, do you want any one with that kind negligence to be making decisions for your eyesight? His license should be taken away!!! read more

So, yeah the space is nicely designed, all minimal and reclaimed wood floors and a sexy bike parked in the window. And the receptionist was sweet and the Doctor was nice enough. So but why the 3 stars? Because that shit was confusing. This was my first eye exam ever (i've been blessed with good eyes until recently). So we went through the vision tests and the dilation of pupils and eye photographs, but no real discussion of what it all meant. Like, when I asked what my prescription was, I was told it was a '2'. But I was not told that this had meaning, and 2 sounds nothing like 20/40 or whatever. I had to do an internet search for the answer. And then it ended with what felt to me like an upsell: you need glasses. Now, that might be the case, but I needed to think about it, see if I could afford it, talk it over with the wife, etc...I mean, they're just for reading anyway. Nothing urgent. And so after that I was led back into the front of the store and just kind of ignored. I'd asked for a print out or something of my prescription--some record of my visit--but got no response. I was disoriented because my eyes were all dilated and I couldn't see. I thought maybe they'd email me something. They didn't. At least I was able to drive home without killing anybody. read more

I was nervous about coming in because I got my glasses online (Warby Parker), not from their store, but the guy was really nice about it. I went to C2020 because they accept my vision insurance and have great reviews on Yelp. Both Dr. Poon and Candice were super nice and helpful. They have a great selection of frames (including locally made, eco friendly, and socially responsible- all of which I prefer to my current DKNY mass produced frames). I've found my permanent optometrist and plan on referring them to everyone I work with. I even took a handful of business card in order to do so. Dr. Poon and his staff (love Todd!) at C2020 are knowledgeable, patient, and efficient. I've been seeing Dr. Poon for 4 years, usually just coming in for the annual routine check-up during which he has always been efficient and pleasant. Recently, I've had some changes in health that have affected my eye health. For this, Dr. Poon was thorough when checking all the possibilities that could be impacting my eyes, explained what he was checking for, listened to my concerns, answered all of my questions (and I had many!), and his recommendations for next steps were clear and practical. One time there was a mistake ordering my contacts (understandably - it was the first time I ordered this new type!) and the office swiftly took care of it at no extra cost to me. Both doctor and assistant were extremely helpful and very friendly. Dr. Poon did a thorough eye exam and gave careful explanations about change in my prescription. I bought my frames there, and the assistant (Candice, I think) was very patient and helpful without being pushy. Great selection of frames and top of the line examination equipment. I found myself across the street at moderne eye optometry and wasn't in love with any of the pairs i saw there. I came to C2020 and instantly found the pair I wanted. The optometrist is also very pleasant and communicative. I came back the next day for my exam with dilation and he served my boyfriend and I some blueberries and orange juice, how sweet! Not only is it a generous snack, it's also a healthy choice. I approve! Plus, the optometrist was very thorough in explaining everything during the examination and I appreciated that. Another thing I greatly appreciated is that instead of that annoying machine that puffs air into your eye, he has a fancy machine that doesn't do that. Yay! read more

C2020 carries frames that you'll see Hollywood movie stars wearing at the Oscar's. I'll be a repeat customer for years. I purchased Rx glasses in Tokyo in the past and recently in Paris where optometry shops are on every corner. Don't expect a wall with hundreds of glasses with none that are quite right. C2020 has some cool shades or glasses. I used my VSP insurance and went with a pair of Mykita No. 2 frames (the hinges have no screws) transition lenses, and AR. College Avenue in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland, Sushi is on the corner, Barney's Burgers, Zach's pizza, Crossroads Clothing, great cafe's and restaurants, and a direct path to UC Berkeley. read more

C2020 Optometry is a very modern space with tasteful minimalistic decor that help showcase the sophisticated and unique selection of eye wear they carry. The shop is situated in the very quaint Rockridge neighborhood nearby other small boutiques and restaurants. There is metered parking along College Ave, but you can also easily park on the side streets free for 2 hours. I initially came to C2020 looking for a spot that sold Salt Optics. I was assisted by Candice who was very patient and knowledgeable of all the product. I'm very particular about the shape of frames I get and Candice was very helpful in helping me find what I was looking for and providing recommendations. She took the time to order frames for me that weren't available in the shop so I could try them before making a purchase. Although I did not see Dr. Poon for my eye exam (I already had my check-up earlier in the year), he was extremely pleasant and helpful during my various visits to the shop, offering blueberries and juice as I perused the selection and tried on various frames. I will definitely be a repeat customer when my VSP benefits renew next year. Some frames are a bit expensive, but not misaligned with the prices you'd see in the market. What can I say? Dr Poon saved my vision. He diagnosed me with suspect of glaucoma. Before this experience, i have no idea what a thorough eye exam meant. I went to my ophthalmologist and even she was impressed by Dr. Poon's report. Dr. Poon level of detail and Professionalism impressed me. Besides, his frames selection is one of a kind... I ended up bought 3 pairs of frames and have my husband bought 1 as well. The store's design & layout is simple, contemporary yet elegance. Super thorough eye exam. Dr. Poon is the most patient optometrist I've ever seen and explained every step in detail. I also loved the cool brands of frames that he carries that are hard to find elsewhere. His assistant knows what types of frames worked with my face and made great recommendations. Dr Poon is excellent! I moved here from Maine with a SERIOUS EYE CONDITION that I had received treatment for in Maine and needed to find an eye doctor fast in California. On calling Dr Poon's office I was able to speak to Dr Poon on the phone and arrange an appointment QUICKLY. Dr Poon is very PROFESSIONAL and knows what he is doing. I have complete trust in him. To put my experience in perspective I had spent several hours that day calling offices of eye doctors explaining I had UVEITIS and needed to see someone who could treat it and see them soon. Of around 15 to 20 offices I called nobody that answered the phone knew what I was talking about. I then began to think that California law may be different to Maine and perhaps OD's in California don't treat this condition. So I called opthalmologist offices who knew what I was talking about but quoted $300 dollars for one visit. This was a problem as being between schools I had no insurance and knew I would need more than one visit for this condition. It was then a relief when I went back to calling OD offices and found Dr Poon's office who KNEW what this condition was. I was also really happy with the price for treatment of my eye condition which because of the nature of this condition took a few visits. I was very happy with the price I paid for my treatment. Dr Poon has shown me that he is great at looking after the entire health of your eyes given his familiarity with this condition. I went back a few weeks later for a regular eye exam and again was VERY HAPPY. read more

The staff at C2020 are really great. First, the eye exam. Dr. Poon has a lot more medical experience than many optometrists. He has an excellent understanding of the eyes and everything that can go wrong with them. Some optometrists seem like they're just there to find you a new prescription, but Dr. Poon really knows how to take care of your eyes. I liked their selection of frames. They have a good mix of utilitarian and funky, and they were patient as we took pictures of me in every pair that I liked. (My eyes are so bad that if I try the frames on without lenses, I can't see if they look good. A digital camera has revolutionized my glasses-buying experience!) The customer service relating to my glasses-buying experience was also top notch. I had a few troubles - my frames were backordered, and when they did come in we had a hard time adjusting them and needed to install separate nose-pads to compensate. Through the whole experience, C2020 was extremely communicative and kept in touch with me every week until my glasses were ready. Overall, this was a lovely experience. I know they are a pretty new business, so I wanted to make sure to give them a great review. It's a tough business climate, and positive reviews really make a difference. after years of not wearing my bifocals (i got them when i was 25 and i'm now 33), i decided to finally get my eyes checked. if i was going to start wearing glasses again, they needed to be cool as cool can be. i browsed yelp and found c2020 with 5 star reviews. the photos showed some great specs, and the reviews were convincing enough to keep me on this side of the bridge instead of wandering into the city for frames. soren greeted me and dr. poon brought out the blueberries and sparkling lemonade - so refreshing on that warm afternoon. my exam with dr. poon was painless and stress-free. i was a little sad to find out that my eyes weren't perfect (as i already knew), but i was ecstatic that i didn't need bifocals!!!!! WOO HOO! after the exam, through which dr. poon explained each exam, i picked out my frames. it took me FOREVER to pick something. there were so many cute frames. and then of course, not everything looked spectacular on my face (big face, asian nose bridge). soren let me k now about the installation of nosepads and after almost 45 minutes we nailed a frame down. i picked up the tana-gokoro frames (seriously pricey but SOOO worth it) and got them back in two weeks. the nose pad installation was top notch and soren was able to get those suckers to sit on my face perfectly. all in all...fantastic service and fantastic frames. i also went back to have nose pads installed on my ray-ban wayfarers so they'd sit right. nothing but good things to say about this place and the folks who work here. read more

The place is in the heart of Rockridge, and C2020 meets the eclectic and elegant (meaning simple, but perfect) charm and expertise of the area. His attention to detail in all matters of the eye, his ability to translate the scientific into the vernacular, added to a calm, but professional approach, makes him a hands down expert at his vocation. After getting my MYKITA frames, I was planning to get lenses made for them at Minor Hall at the UCB Campus. The price there higher than expected and it was also unclear if they would know how to adjust or work with my particular set of frames because MYKITA is not a brand they carry. THAT and I would be paying an extra fee for having brought my own frames! I figured, might as well go back to the place where I know they can handle my frames with the proper tools when the time comes. Even though the cost of my lenses were a bit higher, I was fine with that and I believe I am paying for quality here. This pair of glasses is a gift to myself and I rather not cut corners for something I plan to use everyday and hope to last a good while. I came in to get my measurements done. Wait time for lenses and glasses to come back was about 2 weeks. I got a phone call from one of his staff early on in the day. I rushed to pick them up at about 10 minutes before closing time! Dr. Poon was there and kindly helped to make adjustments on nose pads and the leg hooks behind the ear. Even though it was pretty much closing time, I didn't feel like he was rushing me out and he was very kind and chatty. I liked it and I am very happy with my glasses and overall service. read more

I really like this office, and I previously complained about a mixup about whether I could change what contacts I wanted ordered if the ones I wore didn't feel good. Apparently one of their staff just didn't know about what I was told, and that was the reason for the mixup. I sent them an email, and Dr. Poon told me it was all a mixup and they would deliver on what they told me. So happy because I really liked this office and now I feel totally comfortable coming back every year. read more
