3.9 out of 5, isn't how it felt when I visited the LaGrange store today…read more I was driving back home after leaving VA Hines Hospital visit. I was wearing all black with camouflage military slacks. That must of been where they started their stereo-typing, as I didn't look like I had money to spend from the LaGrange store. I walked the entire lighted footprint as I strolled past the sales desk twice. I took one more look in the area of the showroom with price tags averaging anywhere from $399 to $700 plus. My third approach near the sales desk, made me stop in my tracks with 3 sales people, one on the phone. I asked out loud to them all and asked them if they were on "commission". One lady wearing eyeglasses kinda under her breath stated "Yes". Then I stated that I was in their area of business for at least 15 minutes and NO ONE approached me or openly said Hello. As I continued past them, I said to them that I have $$$$ to spend but wasn't going to patronage them as didn't show any emotion to assisting me. I consider this a very poor approach to sales.

When I noticed that the original business page for J & L Hardware had the "Yelpers report this…read morelocation has been closed" banner stretched near the top of the page, I decided to make this my 100th Review. I was pretty sure it was still open and I wanted to be sure everyone else knows that J & L Hardware is still open. As I walked toward the door, there was an "OPEN" sign lit up in one window. There was a clerk at the counter and he informed me that the man making a key for a customer was the owner. The owner's name is Juan and he was very nice. I told him about Yelp having his business listed as closed and I asked if it was okay to take some pictures. As you can see by the pictures, J & L Hardware is indeed open! I tried to check-in on the original page but since it was "closed", I had to open a new business page to check-in. I have notified Yelp of this situation and I hope they will be able to combine both pages because William H left a nice review on the original business page. As for the hardware store, aside from better lighting, some newer products, a different owner and signage - - it hasn't changed too much from the way I remembered it as Reck's Hardware in the 50-60's! (Although it was Reck's longer than that.) I have been in here on occasion over the years--I used to do more work on my house and it was convenient for me to come here if I needed something. More recently, my neighbor was able to pick up some bolts at J & L Hardware to fix my gate - - it was a lot more convenient and pleasant than going to Home Depot. This neighborhood has older houses and it is nice to have an "old-time" hardware store where you can get some good advice and things you need for the house. Gage Park, My Neighborhood - Review #26

My experience with the place was well, the store was small but easy to find things that are needed for supplies,( well some to most things you can find there) the owner was a generous man that grateful he greets us customers and helps them find what they need, the items are at a fair price, only two things that I don't really find fond of was that there is no public bathroom and you can only pay in card if it's over ten dollars what you are purchasing. Other then that, it's a great place, don't know why it said that it's closed.

This location was originally the location for one of the corporate hardware chains that pulled out several years ago. It is now run independently by a family team. It's one of those locations where you wouldn't be surprised to see a Fatfender pickup or two parked in front. In terms of selection It has everything you'd expect to find in a local hardware store packed into a non-big box space. Sure, you may pay a couple of extra cents for some items, still a fair value for the convenience, but not enough to drive you to the anonymous experience at a big box.
