I love Fabric World! I never know what I will find -- but when I need upholstery fabric for table…read moredrapes or pillow shams, this is THE place to go. The staff is super helpful, and of course the fabric is beyond affordable -- usually $4 a yard or less. Last week I saw 54" wide rolls of block-printed African prints that would have cost oodles in a higher-end store. For $5 a yard. This is the place to go if you are willing to hunt, and if you don't confuse bare-bones displays for a lack of quality. There is always something different, as well, but make sure that you get enough of what you need, because most of the rolls are discontinued / remnants, and you likely won't find that roll again. Fabric World used to have more apparel fabrics, jumbled onto huge tables. During the first year of the pandemic I picked up serious quality cotton - -Robert Kaufmann -- for $3/yard. They aren't carrying the quilting cotton remnants any longer, unfortunately, and the cotton on bolts doesn't feel nearly as high quality. It's also oriented more towards kids' prints. If you are making clothes for rapidly growing kids, though, it's exactly what you'd need! There are a few tables of apparel fabrics left. I've gotten quality linen there, though the bulk is rayon / polyester / viscose / stretch fabrics. If you love fabrics and want to hunt ... this is your place! (Not to mention easy-peasy parking.)

I absolutely recommend this fabric store. If you're into reupholstering, making curtains, or making throw pillows or even a DIY'er you would certainly love Fabric World. Today's price was $3. per yard and the choices were above and beyond fantastic. The young lady who helped me (Kimberly) was amazing and extremely helpful. I will be certainly coming back to get my fabric from the store. One of Georgia's hidden treasures.

Tess World Designs is a new shop in Decatur dedicated to African fabric and accessories. Due to…read moretheir success on Etsy, they recently made the leap to brick and mortar. They're located in the downtown shopping district, about a five minute walk from the Decatur MARTA Station. The bold patterns and pops of color in the window caught my eye as I was driving down E. Ponce de Leon. I circled back, parked on the street and went inside to explore. They have a variety of merchandise: African print fabrics Masks and wood pieces Woven bowls Jewelry Purses, backpacks and sandals Wraps and scarves Kente and Greek graduation stoles A few racks are filled with ready-made men's and women's clothing but fabric is really their forte. Hundreds of beautiful swatches line the walls. Most prints are $7 a yard but the silks go for $12.50 a yard. Since I haven't ticked "learn to sew" off my bucket list yet, I felt in over my head looking at all that cloth. Fortunately, they have contact info for seamstresses so once I have a pattern I can choose the fabric and get something made. It might make sense for them to sell patterns but since they don't I'll need to find one elsewhere. Anyway, I left with a cowrie shell necklace for the boy and two pieces of jewelry for myself. I loved several of their fabrics and hope to be back for one soon. Tess World Designs is a great addition to the Decatur shopping district.

Most checkouts you can enter your loyalty number and start scanning. I feel tech-savvy but the self-checkout was just confusing. It's not clear which ones are open. You can't see the checkout situation until you're next in line to checkout. At one point the lone cashier started scolding the CUSTOMERS for not using self-checkout and told US the line was so long it didn't make sense and WE had to do something about it. Excuse me? I don't work here, find someone who DOES to do something about this long line. How about order online and have it delivered? Or better yet... just order from anywhere online.

If it were handmade, I could understand, but for a plastic one? That's a hard pass. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Everything from candles to basic stationery items you could grab at Walmart is marked up to a level that feels unnecessary. Now, to be fair, they do have some great sales -- and when I say great, I mean really great. But you shouldn't have to wait for a sale just to feel like you're not paying an arm and a leg for a craft project. On the plus side, the staff is friendly and helpful. They have the kind of customer service I appreciate -- where someone actually walks you to what you're looking for instead of just pointing in a general direction and disappearing. That said, the front desk and self-checkout area are another story. I stood at the self-checkout for a solid five minutes waiting for anyone to come by and help with a screen issue so I could remove an item. No one ever came, so I eventually gave up and checked out at another register. Overall, it's a nice store with good selection and solid staff, but I'll be honest -- next time I come, I'll be coming for the sales, not the sticker prices. It's way too easy to walk out broke after buying just a few things.
