It's an American style burger joint with good food and nice decor. Service is great - got there on a Sunday evening and it wasn't crowded. Sat down and ordered a Byron ale - of course... The Mac n Cheese balls are delish!! Crispy, meatball sized and cheesy with bacon, a bit of hot sauce and the Byron cheese - all together it made a great starter. I know, I know...Byron's burgers are the hype in London right now and I am very aware that I'm probably one of the few who actually didn't enjoy their dining-experince here. This Angel-Byron is really trying very hard to be cool; in my opinion, they've gone over-board with the currently all-so trendy "unfinished look": the walls are stripped barren, the cables are exposed and sitting on the upstairs gallery, you feel like you're in an attic or so. Granted, I like the unfnished look...but please keep it in moderation! As for the food, my burger was really just alright; nothing special. And the skin-on chunky fries were bland and lacked some salt (sure, I could add that, but they were so deep-fried that the salt didn't stick to them properly). I was also a little annoyed by the selection of wines. You could choose between: good, better, great and best. I mean, it is already nice that they want to help me with my decision-making, but I find it all to trivial, that the good one is the cheapest and the best one is the most expensive! Coming from the US, I am used to restaurants carrying vegan burger substitutes that aren't chickpea or black bean and this place has the Beyond Meat burger!!! I was so excited to see this on the menu. I've had the chicken sandwich before and it was delicious but this is just so good to me. Really, any style with Byron sauce is good. My husband really likes their Byron original burger. We usually get sweet potato fries and regular fries to share. Finally, if you're feeling extra indulgent, their brownie and ice cream is so tasty. If I hadn't watched workers slave away this time last year actually destroying the ins and outs of this building - exposing beams, sanding off just enough paint, breaking tiles and applying, then distressing the name "Byron" on the outside of the building I might have actually bought it... Instead I just bought a burger. A damn good burger. It involved spicy BBQ sauce, pepper jack cheese and was cooked to perfection. I've also recently indulged in a beetroot salad and an Oreo milkshake that literally blew my mind when it arrived in a milkshake cup with the extra on the side. Solid burgers. The least expensive red wine seemed to pair reasonably well with the Byron burger. Slightly disappointed that they would not do a rare burger; not sure if that's a thing with local laws or restaurant policy. That said, I had a medium rare burger which was more rare than most medium rare burgers I've had at home in the US. The bacon is American-style bacon but for me, a little lacking flavor. My favorite place for a burger in Islington. Mine involved bacon and spicy bbq sauce on a homemade bun. The meat was perfectly cooked, just a bit pink in the middle. I've been disappointed at one too many a burger joint in London, however Byron always comes through. As for the ambiance, most of the Yelp reviews are spot on---this place is the epitome of industrial chic meets a construction site. The interior is purposely left incomplete---exposed rafters, lighting/wiring. When upper street was under construction late this winter, it was hard to tell where the street construction ended and Byron began! But now the sidewalks are nicely polished and construction free. There are 2 or so sidewalk tables you can snag to enjoy your burger outside. If you're in the mood for a damn good burger, there really is no better place on Upper Street. read more

I'm going on a burger hunt, and this was a pretty good choice. I had been wanting to try Byron for years, and now that I went once I've actually been two other times since, at two other locations - each time I've been impressed! The burger is great. I had their Byron burger twice, and it was delicious. I order mine medium rare and the second time at Covent Garden they definitely over-cooked it to medium, and friends who just took theirs medium said theirs was a bit overcooked as well. The Angel branch didn't have this problem. Either way both the Byrons were great, and everyone I was with really enjoyed theirs as well. The third time I went was near Kensington and they had a special burger with crispy fried onions and barbecue sauce on top - I can't remember what it was called, but oh dear LORD was it good! I highly recommend it if you go and it's the special that day. Oh and DEFINITELY get their fried courgettes. I forgo their chips for them every time and I never regret it. I also really like their beer selection, lots of American beers to choose from as well as a couple Brewdog choices, and a few others. I like that each branch has their own atmosphere. It makes each restaurant feel unique even if the food is exactly the same. So far I probably do like Angel one the best for atmosphere, but I'm a bit of a hipster who likes that wood-dominated kinda run-down look. The Covent Garden one is a bit more posh looking though so probably good for a date night, and the Kensington branch is very white and modern. The service is always decent, never out of this world but never bad. Is it the best burger in London? No, not really. But if it can make a score of Americans happy, then it's a good pick. Since it was right across the street from my hotel, I saved it for my last day in London (but not without an urgent reminder from my friend the night before). I've had better salsa and guacamole before, but the burger was incredible! Great place and location on Upper Street. It is opposite the Business Design Centre, and is the latest branch of Bryon (replaces Hamburger Union on Upper Street). David, manager (centre of photos), mentioned that they are rolling out other branches across London - including Covent Garden. I was impressed by the way things were running, given that they had only been open for 3days. All staff very friendly and helpful, especially our waitress Adriana,the manager David and the chefs. Loved the stripped back, almost rustic, look; when you look down from first floor you can see to joists. Cheeseburger with Gruyere cheese was yummy and not greasy like some other burger joints (eg. Fine Burger Co.). Loved the Courgette Fries - they come hot with a nice crispy semolina batter coating. Oreo Cookie milkshake is amazing, and just right composition. I didn't 'mind' Hamburger Union but wow, BYRON is Islington is a fantastic replacement! Firstly I LOVE the decor - amazing. Distressed exterior, raw pipework inside...the entire feel is very raw but it works and is especially beautiful at night. Anyway - we couldn't eat in tonight as we were both exhausted from a day with the kids so I called up and ordered a takeaway (collection only). Our food was excellent. My skinny fries were great, really full of flavour and my wife's skin on chips were even better. Our cheeseburgers were just perfect - soft bun, great meat. I wolfed mine down in seconds! To top it off our milkshakes were off the hook - my OREO cookie one fantastic. Byron works well because it delivers simple simple food but with lots of flavour and no fuss. It's exactly what you want from an honest burger place but goes that little bit further to make you want to come back. My only tiny tiny tiny gripe (which may not apply to most people) is that our burgers were very much medium / rare - i.e. chargrilled on the outside, pink inside. Whilst I LOVE my burgers like this my wife didn't like the rawness so much - so if your'e not a fan of raw meat then please make sure you ask for a well done version! The Byron chain has expanded to Islington. The restaurant's new digs was formerly a Hamburger + so you would think that the conversion would have been a snap. Nope. The Byron crew decided to completely gut the place, giving it a 1990's deconstructed office building feel. I ordered a burger with blue cheese and waited for it while sipping on a Brooklyn Lager. Our waiter kept an eye on us and made sure we content. The food isn't fast, but the 20 minute wait isn't excessively long. The burger arrived on a huge plate with a pickle spear on the side (awesome). It was cooked a perfect medium with a nice streak of pink in the middle, which was a nice change of pace from the usual overcooked rubber patties I am often served. The bun is the perfect size and doesn't overwhelm the beef with too much bread. At one point I commented on the complete silence that had fallen over the table and my husband said, "I can truly say I am just enjoying my food." I ordered french fries instead of the thicker chips and they were nice and crispy. My husband went with the courgette fries and I have to say, unless you hate courgettes, order them. They are served with a crisp batter and a nice moist (but not soggy) middle. There isn't a lot of veg taste to them and they certainly aren't any healthier than the chips, but they're a delicious change from the usual. Along with the usual ketchup and mayo that you always find on the tables of burger joints, there is French's mustard, Coleman's mustard and Cholula, which I appreciated. I went here my first day back in London. After all that travel from the States, a burger was required -- and Byron didn't disappoint. We split the namesake burger, The Byron Burger. Bacon, onion, cheese... what's not to like? The staff was warm and friendly, especially the chipper Scottish girl who served us, along with another guy who I can't recall, but was lovely. I've just eaten my first ever hamburger. Yup, Byon popped this meaty cherry, what a shame hey? It wasn't bad, actually I had a lovely evening. The staff were super friendly and helpful, but considering this is part of the Pizza express group I'm not surprised by that. Byron offers good-quality burgers, and I must say that unlike gbk, the portions make for less clumsy consumption. I had a classic burger. The burger pattie was cooked to perfection, and the meat quality was great. The fries are well salted and nice and crispy. The courgette fries looked curiously healthy on the menu, but after I got an order of those babies, I realised that the were batter-fried. So, yeah, that was the end of healthy fries. Have had many people rave about Byron (mainly Lloyd, s/o) and it was good - I had a huge beef burrito for lunch about 4 hours before so I wasn't rally hungry but stil went for their movember special welsh rarebit topped burger, the mrs had a bunless chicken burger and we split some onion rings. The burger was a perfect medium and the topping was nice, the bun was ovely and overall it told that the concept was sound - too many burger joints you end up eating the debris with utensils as the patty and bun collapse into nothingness under the stress of containing al the flavour/expectaions/condiments - not so here so a big score! Onion rings in really light batter were lovely and the chicken burger was good too. Friendly staff and very helpful. Brooklyn lager - reminisce about halcyon times in NY - so another plus point. On a busy Saturday night, we were able to get seated for 7 in 10 minutes and they even had a kids menu! We were sat down and ordered a few beers and wine. I ordered the Tempranillo, which was juicy and yummy with our tortilla chips and guac/salsa. I have to say this guacamole was really good! A few of us ordered the Byron burger and the Byron with bacon, which looked good. And a few of us ordered the seasonal Hot a Doodle do, a chicken marinated in hot sauce, with crispy onions and a pickle, which I loved. I did add some of cholula sauce at the table cuz I like my spicy. I would not recommend the regular chicken burger -- dry, and not chockful of veggies like I would have hoped. So Byron does burgers. However Byron burgers are not the best burgers, rather just basic burgers. I had the Byron burger which with bacon should elevate your basic burger to a beautiful burger, but it was still basic. Its flavor was a bit bare, as the Byron sauce wasn't a beautiful addition (although your basic ketchup and mustard helped). I didn't abhor the burger, it just wasn't any special. Coming from the states, it was definitely no In N Out burger (or even my favorite Santa Cruz local, Jack's). The price was a bit much for what you got as well. Pros: Onion rings were alright if a bit greasy. They had American mustard. I liked that they served the burger with a dill pickle on the side. I might go back. The blue cheese sauce had me intrigued. I'm a fan of Byron burgers, and thank god something replaced that torture chamber formerly known as Hamburger +, but it takes me a little while to accept this location. We're not in Shoreditch... let's just call it a slow burn. But they've been reading my Dream Diary and took my advice. If they like it, then they better put an (onion) ring on it. And they have... so now I'm incapable of resisting the hipster waitstaff who look like misplaced All Saints workers. If you can tell if any of this review is more compliment or insult then you're more skilled than most. I've been careful, living in London, to stay away from those foods of which I have high standards for from places that do them too well. Being from the Bay Area, where burgers come from grass fed, free range stock and cooked just right (900 Grayson I miss you), I didn't exect much at Byron's. Well, they haven't surpassed my faves, but they did come close. Light and pleasant artisan bun, hearty bacon, and a patty that was flavorful, deliciously pink medium and a crunchy crust to the meat cooked on a very hot grill, it's a damn fine burger. The thick cut fries, typically my go-to side, were surprisingly rather bland, but their shoestring fries were just right. Bonus points for the pickle. I enjoy their gritty but trendy decor, although maybe they went a little too far on the exposed wiring and plumbing. The main deterrants to this place are how busy it gets and the extravagant prices. A 12 to 13 pound bill for a burger and fries just seems wrong to me, where in the (also expensive) Bay Area you'd be getting a beer with a high quality burger for the same or lower price. read more

This place has is all starting with amazing burgers cooked to a perfect medium rare (any more done and you might as well be eating a hockey puck, I'm talking to you GBK). Perfect amount of toppings to burger ratio, CRISPY bacon (not the thick fatty stuff served around London) and real BBQ sauce. I don't think I've ever posted a burger review on Yelp, which seems a sore oversight! I think it may have something to do with the fact that most of the burgers I have leave me a bit disappointed, I'm clearly not going to the right spots! The exception to this rule is Byron, which despite it's crazy expansion and generally boring everywhere-ness, really is that good. Shout out to the summer burger they have at the moment as well - the Sweet Caroline. Shoestring fries on my burger? Saves me the guilt of having to decide whether to order fries and oh so tasty to boot! Love the slice of gherkin that comes with the burger - delish. Their shakes are amazing. And while the staff are cool, they're not too cool to serve you well. The macaroni cheese at this place is just like mum used to make. Which is a shame because, for all her wonderful qualities, my mum is a bit of a rubbish cook. And the mac'n'cheese at Byron genuinely is a lot like hers - a thick layer of cheese on top, but otherwise shot through with flavourless, insipid white sauce. I'm giving Byron an A-OK. I don't tend to crave burgers in the UK like I used to in the States, but when I do they can certainly hit the spot. One thing to be weary of is that even when ordering your burger medium, it is likely to come back to you quite pink. This has been consistent for me across all Byron visits - As I tend to order medium rare I was rather surprised by the almost raw burger put in front of me. That being said, ambiance is good, service is quick and attentive and there are healthier options (like iceberg lettuce with blue cheese which really just strikes my fancy). I'd say a good spot to bring visiting friends who may be pickier eaters. Drinks are also available across the range - from homemade lemonade, to craft beers, to some average to pretty good wine. Just be aware that ordering a number can get a bit pricey so hitting up on of the great local bars on Essex Road may be a better drinking option post-dinner (some of the better quality wines will get you at about 6/7 quid a drink). read more

OK - the ambiance? Urban shabbiness taken beyond extreme and well into uncomfortable. We had to change wobbly tables three times before we found one that was going to safely hold up the burger plates we planned on ordering. The friendly waiter seemed almost embarrassed by the furniture as he helped us try the tables out. No one coming in after us wanted to sit at them them either. There's a design center right across the street Byron - maybe you need a consultation? Now for the food ... between the four of us we had the regular cheeseburger, the Byron burger, the veggie burger, and a chicken Caesar salad, as well as splitting a order of onion rings. All of it was good - not the best we've ever had, but good. The meat was juicy & not overcooked at medium and the buns were soft & not at all stale (a common shortcoming at UK burger joints). The veggie burger was a flavorful portobello mushroom topped with spinach, roasted red pepper and goat's cheese. The onion rings were quite good - lightly battered and not too greasy. And the salad was not a red-headed stepchild - the chicken was freshly grilled and well marinated. The burgers are average priced if you consider a seven dollar burger in the states is the same as a seven pound burger here, but the sides and soft drinks are well over-priced. As a very infrequent meat eater, I truly savor the times when my meaty boyfriend can convince me to take a walk on the carnivorous side. I have to say I was a bit disappointed in Byron. I figured since it has multiple big, and hopping locations, it must be pretty good, but it fell a bit shy of that for me. Mostly my problem was with the rare-ness of the burger. I like a rare steak, but for me, a burger shouldn't be red. A little light pink is fine, but this was just too much. Through the whole meal I couldn't help thinking "I hope they practice proper refrigeration and meat-handling back there." If you don't enjoy really enjoy rare ground meat, I would suggest ordering "not as rare as usual, please." And for me the decor was also a little underdone (pun intended). I understand the distressed look, but this place seriously looks like it's still under construction. I was wondering when some plaster dust was going to fall from the exposed ceiling and sprinkle my chips! Take a weekend, and give this place a polish, please! Will I be going back? My cousin recommended Byron's because he said the hamburgers were good. Walked into a cutesy hamburger joint. Bf ordered the Byron (bacon, cheddar and Byron sauce) and I ordered the skinny (burger w/o the bun). We topped it off with an order of fries and strawberry shake. I remember the burgers being a bit tiny and the side of fries being really small. But we thought, maybe this is how much the rest of the world eats. Americans are just greedy and fat. =P The burgers were juicy. I don't really remember any of the flavors being unique or outstanding. The fries and shake were decent was well. Overall, an ok meal. Aussie or Yank... what shall it be... Chips or fries... Down under you get sharp cheddar, beetroot, egg, bacon, carrot and avocado on your hamburger in addition to the usual lettuce tomato and oh of course beef. In the States however you get your decorative salad and seared patti smothered in spicy, smokey condiments vacuum-formed in viscus monterey-jack (this is a good thing if you were thinking it sounds like industrial manufacturing), it is also the only condition through which I will consume American cheese, and enjoy it. Quite pricey I have to say... but if you're going to spend the money on a burger, at least you'll enjoy it here. I can also recommend the frittered courgettes and the skins-on potatoes wedges as sides. Don't get a milkshake alongside your meal if you don't have a stomach the size of the Hoover Dam... they're extremely tasty but SO filling, as if the burger wasn't enough... So I can have a really nice burger, with a side of really lovely macaroni cheese? Where do I need to go? Came here, a little merry after a few cocktails, thinking it didn't matter too much what I was eating, so we'd chance it with a chain, but to macdonalds as nandos is to KFC, it was not! I like to hate chains, but I can't hate Byron, a good choice of burgers, including veggie options, even a good choice of chips. They do specials, and they have a burger club too. The waiter was brilliant, and we had some great banter, and ribbing me over my tipsy state, and egging me on to try the alcoholic shakes, yes, alcoholic shakes. As a full on milkshake fiend (I have to have friends and loved ones guard the second half, forcing me to control myself and not inhale the whole thing), I can vouch for the shakes (even the chocolate ones) and the booze ones are a great great way to indulge. I give this place a thumbs up. The burgers were juicy, not overcooked, and had the right texture (key). They have several different types of burgers, many of them unique - making it tough to make a decision. Their fries were good too. When my family came to London to visit, my father noticed this place on the first night of his visit and made a mental bookmark to return. As requested, a few nights later we were in the mood for a quick dinner, close to the hotel. Byron seemed to fit the bill perfectly. Unfortunately, we were not impressed by the American style burgers. While I enjoyed the fixins on the burger I ordered, both my and my father's patties were woefully overcooked. The chips were floppy. My sister's salad was tasty but the quinoa was seriously undercooked and gritty. The waiter was slowslowslow and also somewhat snooty. He seemed frustrated that we only asked one order of chips and opted for tap water and nothing else to drink. All in all, the food wasn't horrific but it was definitely unremarkable and overpriced for what it was. With Five Guys across the street, I wouldn't come back. read more
