I love this restaurant. Anything you order from here is guaranteed to be good. I love they have a special menu for each season. The breakfast is phenomenal, omelettes are my favorite, I recommend the extra omelette (that's the name) but all of them are good. My friend took me here for brunch one day years ago and I've been hooked ever since. The service is also 10/10, the food is always made to perfection and the wait is usually not long. I've been a customer of Buttercup in Oakland for years but today might be our last time coming. Ordered cheesy grits and they had absolutely NO flavor they said the cheese was mixed in with the grits. Mixed it up a few times still no flavor nor cheese flavor. Added hella salt and pepper for flavor and still not the same as the Buttercup in Concord. My husband took a sip of my coffee said it was good so I asked for a refill of my coffee and they did but also gave him a cup and charged him. He did not ask for a cup of coffee. Overall flavor of our $40 breakfast was just ok. Guess it really depends on what you order at this particular restaurant. read more

On a whim we came to Jack London Square searching for dinner. Although the parking lot was rather crowded Buttercup's dining room was empty. Our server Julie was attentive but not overwhelming. There was a steady flow of customers, and once one table left the buser quickly came to clean the tables. For dinner we had the pork chop with baked potatoes and mixed vegetables and cashew chicken with rice. The food was piping hot, flavorful and came out incredibly fast. The menu is very large and meets all needs at this diner! I have always had great experiences at diners when it comes to steaks and prime rib, so me and my friend I ordered the prime rib. Rolled into this spot in the evening was curious about dessert and how cute this name of this restaurant. We were greeted by happy human being, who is also the manager, Ruth. Her customer service was outstanding and she helped us navigate through the menu and made our special request happen with joy! We loved the fact this cafe vibe had a proper bar and with high end liquor options. The desserts were phenomenal and will definitely go back when I want to cheat on my waistline. We ordered a variety- key lime pie, Brownie Mud Bash (my favorite) and Blueberry Streusel Pie. They were all really good and enjoyable. I can't really say I've ever been disappointed by a meal here. My only complaint ever is that their club sandwich has too much meat, particularly ham but that can be a compliment for some folks. I used to come here when the line at Oakland Grill was too long but now typically just come here. I'm usually here for breakfast, even if it's nighttime or their wings. Breakfast items are always fresh and delicious. Really big fan of the chicken apple sausage omelet that comes with mushrooms and spinach. I always request extra crispy hash browns and they come out crispy and browned. I always appreciate coming here around noon and seeing all the items. Tables will be split with breakfast and lunch items and the full Gamut of foods. It's not uncommon to see omelets, Benedict's, wings, burgers, salads, or pasta at one table I will say the wings are some of the best in the city. Buttercup is usually absolutely lovely. Large portions, great food. We have come here and brought friends so many times. Today my partner and I ordered food for takeout instead of dining in bc it's been a long day. So we ordered our food online and came in to pay for and pick up our food tonight. When I was paying for the food, I asked the gal at the hostess station if the card reader was asking for the tip PERCENTAGE or DOLLAR AMOUNT, she said it was the screen was asking for the tip percentage (not the dollar amount), so I entered 20 - thinking it was 20%. Turns out she made me tip $20 on a $44 bill?!?!?!?!? That makes it nearly a 50% tip when that was not in our budget for tonight?!?! Anyway. I would NOT RECOMMEND EVER ordering or tipping on takeout, unless you have learned that the screen shows the DOLLAR AMOUNT rather than what we the financially incentivized hostess tells you what to tip. Service was minimal at best, weren't greeted right away even though I wad staring right at them when I walked in waiting for someone to seat me. Waiter who took orders was friendly at least. Can't believe it took me this long to try Buttercup! Jack London is home to some great brunch spots, but in terms of value and food, I think Buttercup might be the winner :) There's also a parking lot just outside the restaurant which is super convenient for those not in the area. We came for brunch on a Saturday and the place was pretty busy but we were seated promptly! Right away, I loved that the menu was so extensive but best of all - the prices! Definitely coming back to try their $25 prime rib but for brunch my BF and I got the Belgian waffle and huevos rancheros. Portion sizes were HUGE for the price and delicious - especially the huevos rancheros which was drenched in delicious salsas. Our waitress was also wonderful, coming by often to check on if we needed anything. Also love that there's a full bar - we got mimosas and a michelada but I haven't been to many diners that have a full bar so it's definitely a unique feature of the place. Went to the Buttercup for the first time in 25 years. We were staying at the Marriott City Center and was thinking about where to go eat Breakfast the next day. I did have some thoughts about walking the streets of Oakland being so close to the Oakland Police Department and crime in the area. I took off my Rollie and left cash in my hotel room as a second thought and walked to the restaurant. No one on the street at 8am Saturday and it was actually nice no vagrants or homeless people in the streets! We were greeted at the entrance and the restaurant was very busy. I saw 4 OPD officers leaving and figured that's a good sign! I ordered a Florentine Omelette filled with spinach and cheese topped with Hollandaise sauce and was absolutely delicious! My Bro in Law had Shrimp and Grits and since he was hungry ordered three fried eggs as well. The shrimp and Grits was a big bowl and looked delicious. So much so Bro could not eat the eggs as he was stuffed! Next time in Oakland will definitely go back ! read more

The Food has always been on point for me. The Service of the waitress Mikayla and Perla were super helpful and professional and very attentive. The ambiance is family friendly and I love the fact that they have t.v's there because when it's football or basketball season it's always nice to be able to sit down and watch while having super good grub. My kids have played in AAU basketball tournaments at Open Premier gym so when there is a big hour of gaps of time to eat lunch we go here to eat. Was looking for a breakfast restaurant as I left a friend off at Amtrak station in Jack London Square. As I was driving towards Broadway to go to Downtown I noticed Buttercup on the opposite side. While the parking lot was almost full at 8:45 am there was plenty of off street parking. I circle around found a space in the parking lot. As I entered I was immediately welcomed by Waitress Micky who walked me to a booth. She asked if I wanted coffee and said yes. I knew what I wanted which pancakes and added scrambled eggs, hash browns and 2 pieces of bacon. Within 10-15 minutes I had my breakfast. We used to come here twice a week after our dance class and they are finally open for indoor dining so for my birthday I suggested we come here to celebrate since we knew that Joe was working and there was pumpkin pie in season! It was good after some 18 months that we get to go back to one of our favorite restaurants for some comfort food and familiarity.  Lorena is back working here and she was our regular server.  The food is still delicious and we ordered the roast turkey dinner with extra gravy and a green salad for each of us.  The portions are hearty and we have enough turkey and sides for another meal.  For dessert, I ordered the pumpkin pie and it was compliments from the house where the servers sang Happy Birthday to me.  Home away from home cooking!  I'm glad we're back! read more
