This is what happens when you focus on quality, local ingredients. Everything we ordered was perfect. We sipped our honey-lavender lemonades while we waited; the flavors of the lemonade were amazing! We could really distinguish the honey, lavender, and lemon. Quinn got the Manhattan chowder (with the optional addition of cream). I had the PNW spring clam chowder. It's really cool how she makes the chowder to order! The chowders came out in less than ten minutes, and were absolutely delicious and fresh tasting. The clams were tender and tasted fresh from the ocean. When we come back, I think I'll have to get a cup of the Manhattan chowder. The tomato base adds a really good flavor to the broth. Forgot to mention: their chowder is served with a pat of lemon/herb butter on top. Yep. We could only eat half of our chowders because we had to save room for ice cream! The sour cream strawberry rhubarb in a poppy seed cone was such a refreshing combination. My tiramisu semifreddo (layered ice cream and mousse) was decadent and amazing. Buttercup is our favorite ice cream anywhere! Julie makes different homemade flavors every month and they are always creative and delicious combinations. There is always a vegan sorbet and a vegan ice cream option, usually made with coconut milk, which I love, since I can't eat dairy. My kids love her marshmallow ice cream, which is usually on the menu. A vegan favorite of mine is the coconut banana chocolate chip ice cream. The soups and stews are also to die for, and there is always a vegan option as well. Seafood or chicken can be added. A favorite is the Thai Curry Chowder. This shop is very deceiving, they offer about 8 flavors. I only had to try one to know what I wanted. Both my husband and I got the blackberry lavender ice cream on a brown butter cone. It was amazing. We also bought the honey lavender lemonade, which was also fantastic. Besides the flavor of the ice cream, you can definitely tell this is a small batch, high quality ice cream; we both got chunks of blackberry and cream. I would love to try the rest of the flavors. This place is ridiculously good! The employees are friendly and helpful, describing things on the menu. Their soups are reasonably priced and beyond delicious, with both vegan and meat options. They don't even tell you they serve them with fresh baked bread! They brought our food out to us on the covered patio, overlooking the river. We didn't have to worry about the rain or distancing there, since it was a large, open space (except the roof). Then we had their ice cream and OMG! The burnt chocolate was truly amazing, bitter and toasty. The marshmallow was sweet and delicious, too. And their homemade cones were amazing too! We tried the clam chowder and two flavors of ice cream. Clam chowder was tasty and just as described by other Yelpers. Not your typical thick and potato based chowder. This one was full of fresh tasting seafood, herbs and real cream. The coconut pistachio ice cream was well done. We also tried the burned chocolate flavor. But she consistently has about four types of delicious options including traditional clam chowder. Now, once you've had your savory meal, make sure you don't forget the ice cream. This stuff will blow your mind with the richness of the ice cream and semi freddos offered. Her signature flavor is marshmallow which is better than an actual marshmallow. The chowder is soooo good! If you want a really good bowl of chowder without feeling like you are digging into a bowl of thickened cream, this is the place to go. I just stopped by buttercup to grab dinner for my family to eat back at our campsite because its been a rainy day and we don't feel like cooking nor eating at the same places we always to go in Manzanita. We chose the Northwest summer clam chowder and the Caribbean seafood curry which were both tasty and satisfied our craving for a hot meal. The clam chowder had a good balance of summer veggies, razor clams, and red potatoes. The chowder has more of a broth which I could dip the bread they provided into rather than having to eat spoonfuls of a gluey starch sludge as with some clan chowders. The seafood curry was a coconut based soup with cubed yams, whitefish, prawns, and calamari. I felt like there was enough salt in each soup but after they are prepared and laddled into their to-go containers your can add salt and seasonings, of which they have many, on a table near the counter. They also have a variety of hot sauces if you want some heat. I recommend getting some sriracha to add to the curry. Can't wait to visit again and again to try other chowders and the ice cream! read more

There are 4 chowders available from a traditional razor clam, a Manhattan style with a red base, a seasonal one (it's spring leek, artichoke and purple potato right now) and her crowning glory, a Thai coconut seafood chowder that will blow.your.mind. The ice creams are just as creative with delicious house made cones to bring out the flavors of the ice cream. Genius! My very favorite are the semifreddos, which are an Italian ice cream dessert that is crazy delicious! I've never had one till eating one at Buttercup and (swoon) I'm in love! You must try the spumoni semifreddo with cherry, pistachio and chocolate layers that will redefine your childhood experiences of this flavor and leave you running back for more. Buttercup is take out only so come prepared to take home or for a picnic. If you are going to have the chowder later, ask to have take it cold or they will heat it up for you there.You can also build your own chowder as they assemble it for each order individually, so you can ask for more of this and less of that or just add something that might not be in that chowder. We made a special trip down to Nehalem from Cannon Beach because I was craving soup and my 5 year old can always eat ice cream...and it did not disappoint! I had a bowl of the chicken, corn, green chili chowder which was served piping hot with a chunk of crusty bread...so delicious! I went back for a to-go pint of the green curry chowder which was also excellent. My daughter got a cone of peach melba and I had my first experience with ruby chocolate - the ice cream was as solid as the soup. Everything tastes scratch made with high quality ingredients. The flavors are unique, and there are paired cones for the ice cream if you so desire. I chose burnt chocolate (which doesn't taste burnt, just toasted) with a marcona almond waffle cone. We tried three of her chowders, which you can have warm on the spot or she'll mix them cold for you to heat at home. She is a really talented chef with spot-on taste.
