I recommend going out of your way to eat here on the back patio overlooking the river. This was one of the best salads I've ever had in my life because all the ingredients were FRESH FRESH FRESH. The strawberry vinaigrette was so aromatic and the salad came with interesting peppers. My friends also swear by the ice cream and soup but I'm dieting. Womp womp. This was an unexpectedly great discovery, chowders. We tried two flavors and were enchanted by the complex rich but not claggy combinations. Smoked salmon with fried caper topping a revelation with a bit of spicy. The clam chowder was one of the best chowders I've ever eaten featuring razor clams. We'd heard about Buttercup on Yelp and also through some friends and were excited to try it. It did not disappoint! I was going just for the ice cream but my husband's friend had told us that we needed to try the chowder and he was right. It is not your normal thick stuff; the traditional chowder, which my husband got, is instead thickened with a potato base. Each bowl is freshly made with the soup bases, from ingredients that have been simmered, and so your bowl is exactly what you personally want. I was intrigued by the Provençal chowder and it was PHENOMENAL. The broth was perfectly balanced, savory with an earthy quality. And the chowder itself-- so full of the goods that I could hardly believe it. Nice chunks of vegetables and huge chunks of shrimp and calimari. If I could have licked my bowl without feeling wholly uncouth I would have. And that doesn't even begin to talk about the ice cream. I'll leave that mostly to everyone else other than to say that the flavor combinations may sound a bit crazy, but trust them, because they're to die for. read more

We tried the corn soup, curry and ice cream sandwich. We absolutely loved the corn soup and curry! I added shrimp to the curry and for the corn soup we had it vegetarian. All of the ingredients tasted so fresh and you could certainly see that they made it fresh! The slice of bread that it was served with was even amazing! We have gotten ice cream all over the country, we seek it out on every vacation big or small and if there is somewhere making fresh made, we are there. We make our own in both custard and non custards styles as well and enjoy talking to other ice cream makers. Buttercup ice cream is one of the best we have ever tasted (top two). This reminds me I need to keep and eye on her menu for when she puts out Lemon Balm again. I usually just get the marshmallow on graham cracker and chocolate cone because it's my favorite and since it's a rotating menu mainstay it must be many peoples :) She uses Bennet Family Farm milk which we had the privilege to home order for about a year before they shut down the milk man service and they have the best milk! read more

Not your typical chowder. Quite frankly, I think it's better than Moe's, or any other restaurant chowder I've had in my years living on the coast. The menu rotates frequently, so here's always something new to try. They even sell to-go containers in the fridge. Chowder came in a big bowl with a couple slices of bread. Was able to walk out the store and around the back to sit on the patio overlooking the river. Patio space is shared with the Fish truck, out of the back of the Antique shop, so if it's busy, there may not be much space. Didn't try the ice cream, but it looked incredible! read more

We were on a trip here for 5 days, and this by far was the best meal of our trip! We were tired of fried fish and ended up for the most wholesome, delicious, fresh "chowder" we could have dreamed of. I got the red curry chowder and it was so yummy, I'm still dreaming of it. My husband got the original and it was delicious, and we had friends that got the street corn chowder and it was quite tasty too!! All served with beautiful slice of bread with butter. I don't normally order ice cream in the middle of the day, but when on vacation- I went for it!! I got the burnt chocolate ice cream with the chocolate dipped cone. It was AMAZING. I wanted to go back for more but sadly we were just passing through this day and never made it back. Just stop here and enjoy a tasty meal by the river!! I loved Buttercup, the soups were so wonderful, especially the Thai sea food soup, chock full of fresh seafoods such as shrimp, calamari, fish, etc., with nicely diced sweet potatoes, cabbage. Been coming here for the past 6 years but sadly very disappointed with the Thai soup I ordered recently; it was full of vegetables but hardly any seafood pieces. It did not taste "special" at all, and we do pay extra for the seafood pieces. The quality has gone down and that is a sad statement for a place we loved for so many years. The chowder and ice cream are both delicious. The chowder is not as heavy as the traditional New England clam chowder--but it's so much more flavorful and loaded with veggies. We specifically planned our day out to make a stop here at buttercups. They close at six so we made sure to go by at four. When we arrived we were notified that they were out of all of their chowders except for one. I was extremely disappointed. We ended up getting a red thai chowder because that is all they had. We ate it later in the room and it was OK but lacked seasoning. I am assuming this is because they add all their ingredients into a broth right in front of you so the seafood or the vegetables don't seem to be infused.
