I wanted to update with the latest find. I just purchased a smoker so we've been experimenting with it and trying to get it all down. Well, we planned a swim and bbq party and I really didn't want to smoke ribs again (though I am getting good at those) so I thought "why not try some really good sausages?" So off I went to see Butcher Bob to see what I could find. The place is still as good as it was since my last visit, I told him what I was wanting to do and he guided me to the home made sausage counter. OMG!!! So many different choices!! :) so, I asked him to tell me a little bit about each of them. When he got to the polish and told me that it was a great garlic infused one, I knew I had to try it! So off I went with my purchase, I had 8 sausages and spent less than $20 so to me that is a great buy. He was right, the sausages were the hit of the party and were the 1st to go! Also, 2 people from the party went to Butcher Bob to purchase meats by the end of the week. They are a great local place to purchase quality grass fed meats, no corn on these guys!! read more

WOW! I live walking distance from this butcher shop; it's such a shame I waited to visit until yesterday! I picked up some ground venison and ground pork to make home made meatballs. Oh dear. I came here trying to find a roast that wasn't filled with grissle or veins. They recommended the sirloin roast. I usually cook my roasts in the oven with my digitized thermometer. This place has some of the best cuts of meat I have seen. I prefer them to AJs not only on price but they also have USDA Prime that looks fresher and is cut better than AJs. The also have chicken and some fish as well as a few other meat choices. They are usually busy but are always friendly and helpful and speedy. I got some grass fed beef bones to make bone broth here and they were good quality and inexpensive for a whole bag. I have had the filets from here and they melted in my mouth after they were cooked. The marbling is beautiful in their other cuts and the have a fresh fish order once a month you can be added to if you want to sign up. I have not tried it yet, but the fish is fresh off a plane and not previously frozen. The place is small and kinda hard to spot from the road but they did put up a billboard sign. read more

After searching for several years to find a quality butcher shop I have finally found the gold standard. I drove from North Phoenix to their location on the west side and it was absolutely worth the drive. Their selection of fresh as well as frozen meats were excellent. I walked in to get a standing rib roast and walked out with the roast plus some thick bone-in pork chops and a rack of beef ribs. I barbecue quite frequently and found these three items to be the best I've had in my three years in Phoenix. The service was outstanding and the prices were very reasonable. I will be a regular customer. Can't wait to try some of their other items! read more

When I visit my parents in Surprise I visit here. When we moved away from Chicago we lost our connection to lake perch. Every restaurant served this delicious fish on Fridays. Ocean perch just isn't the same. I just cooked the last of the lake perch before spring break so time to stock back up. Great butcher catering to the transplanted Chicago person. read more

Only thing about this place I don't like ---Two of us in the house. We are on restrictive diets so ONE of each item feeds both of us for dinner, once you add the salad and whatever other veggie. The two NY strip steaks I purchased from Bob's were a disappointment. I prepared them the way I normally do by searing in cast iron pan and finishing in 300 degree oven. After cooking I let the steaks cool a bit, then sliced up. The insides were a nice medium rare, which is how I like them. When I bit into mine it was as tough as old Harry. I drove 15miles to go to Butcher Bobs for a prime 8lb boneless rib loin for a very special dinner. I asked for prime but they didn't have one when I was there, so they said they wrapped up a very nice 8lb CAB rib loin instead. The next day when I unwrapped the meat, there was absolutely no marbling whatsoever. If it hadn't been on a Sunday, I would have returned the roast. But unfortunately, my guests were arriving in 3hrs so I was stuck. I put the rib loin on my smoker and set the timer/temp control for a perfect 125* internal temp before removing from the smoker to reverse sear the meat to get that perfect crust. When My guests arrived and I sliced the first serving I knew right away that this piece of meat was going to be like shoe leather. And it did not disappoint. This was the worst piece of meat I've ever had to serve my guests. There was no way that this was CAB product. I should know since I've spent 46years in the food business . I question whether it was even a choice product. It was probably select or no roll. This piece of meat was over $120, and I was so embarrassed that this was served to my guests. I had heard good things about this meat shop and being new to AZ, I took someone's word for it. Unfortunately, this was my first and last visit to Butcher Bobs. I feel like I was robbed by Butcher Bobs!!! read more

I went in for the first time always excited to check out a butcher shop and finally did! I walked in and was not welcomed in. They just stared at me while I awkwardly walked in because no one said anything to me as I walked in. I'm looking around helping myself. As I'm walking around looking at everything someone finally said something, "anything I can get you?" I responded, "no this is my first time here, still looking. Thank you" smiling. And he just walked into the back with no respond. Was hoping he would give me pointers or specials or anything. Finally I picked something. Just 1 steak. He didn't say anything and just grabbed it for me. Finally I believe the manager or owner walked out from the back and took my meat from him and got it weighed and cashed me out and was semi talking to me a lot better then the other 2 standing out there staring at me. Once I got home wife already had dinner made and we saved our steak for tomorrow night. Never got to it and got grey. I don't really care to walk back in to get more to actually try it. read more

They state on web site they carry grass fed beef but actually do not. Very misleading which causes me to question their integrity!

My husband and I purchased two grass fed my strip steaks to grill for Father's Day along with ground veal and cube steaks for later in the week. This was our first time as customers. I seasoned the steaks with Himalayan pink seat salt and pepper, both fresh ground lightly on both sides. Once room temperature we seared on high 3 minutes each side then indirect heat 3 minutes each side, topped with tab of butter after plating. OMGosh, the steak had the best flavor and melted in our mouths. Can't wait to add the veal to meatball mixture and use the cube steaks for Swiss steaks this week. This place reminds me of the butcher shop I use to go to as a child in Kansas City. The quality of the meat is outstanding. Everything cooks up well and is full of flavor. They have just about anything you could want and the staff is very nice and helpful. The only downfall is the hours. They close at 5 pm M-F. read more

Went in and asked a few questions as I was looking for something to make a cultural dish my grandmother used to make. The answer was delivered in a very insulting way linking my request to dog food and I was then referred to Food City or Lee Lee because they "sell anything." I had other meat purchases to make but since the individual in question turned and walked into the back room, I decided to make them elsewhere. Rather I went to a local farmers market and bought what I was inquiring about directly from a rancher. No insults. A simple no would have sufficed. I really didn't know much about this place until my friends told me about it. The 1st time I start by I got some filets at around $30 a lb.and they were great! Then I notice they had some Carny asadah and pollo asadah.They both were on point and when you eat it you say ahah. What is the best names I had their though were the steak burgers very luscious. And pork ribs if you are a smoker have definitely a bunch more meat on them than the store.they were good 2hrs at 200° then 2hrs in tin foil with apple juice at 225 then 1 hour on rack w/sauce @250°. read more

I love this place. I wish I had tried it out sooner. I've lived in this part of the Phoenix area for over 10 years, and drove by it often. My husband and I would say "there's Butcher Bob's" every time we drove by. One day I suggested we stop in to take a look. We were pleasantly surprised. The meat in the case looked really yummy. The prices were competitive to big box grocery stores. We decided to try it out, so we picked out a ribeye steak to share. We took it home and threw it on the bbq. It was one of the best steaks. Now, I but just about all my meat from them. I ordered our turkey for Thanksgiving and a prime rib for Christmas. Both were awesome.
