Very simple concept and wonderfully executed! Came here for a work function, with a group of almost twenty, and they accommodated us fairly quickly. They reserved lanes for us to compete in and allowed us to bring in outside food and drinks, alcohol allowed, while we participated in hatchet throwing. There will be a guide, or rather an 'axe master,' who will instruct you on how to throw and fix your technique as you go along. Booked a lane for 10 people. Everything went smooth from start to finish. You arrive, you sign a waiver, and in minutes you'll be throwing hatchets like a maniac. I've tried coming to this place twice now and both unsuccessful from the bad customer service I received. The first time they said they wouldn't accept multiple payments for a game even though I was with a large group and everyone was paying for themselves. So we went else where, where they did allow that. The second time I had a large group coming in and wanted a 530 time slot or around then. They said they only accept times for 445, 7, and 9. How ridiculous is that. I will never try to go to this place again. There are other places like this around this area that have given way better customer service. read more

My husband and I went to Bury the Hatchet with a large group to celebrate a friend's birthday. We truly had no idea what to expect from an outing like this or if we would be any good at throwing axes. Our axe master, Gary, was awesome, as he thoroughly instructed us on how to throw the axe properly. He also had a bunch of ideas regarding other games we could play, such as Around the World and Battleship. By the end of the night, just about everyone was hitting the board and having a great time. Place is BYOB and allows patrons to bring their own food if they wish. They even provide empty refrigerators so people can keep their favorite beverages cold. We look forward to returning to Bury the Hatchet sometime soon! read more

Me and my friend called to make reservations and the woman who we spoke with said we don't need to and there's plenty of openings and to walk in "I'll be here all night." We get there and no one was at the front to greet us so I walked to the back to find someone and a man asked me "what are you looking for?" And I answered with someone to help me, I was told I can walk in tonight. He answered me "we don't accept walk ins after 8pm" it was 8:20pm. I explained how we were told that we can walk in tonight and he kept telling me "sorry" that's about it. I went back to the front to tell my friend and she was speaking to a woman who told us they are at capacity and took the last walk ins minutes before we got there. Kim then told us that we spoke with a call center. How is that possible if they said "we will be here all night" Kim went on to say the call center does more harm than good and told us to go Bloomfield they might something about even though they don't take walk ins after 8pm. Talk about bad customer service and way to BURY THAT RATCHET!! read more

My husband and I have a three-year old daughter. When we had the opportunity to take the same day off while she was at pre-school, and visited Bury the Hatchet Paramus. Using a Groupon, we used the online appointment system to schedule a 2:30pm session that lasted 2 hours. We were so pooped from the activity (it's a workout if you're not a regular exerciser!), I don't think we actually went the entire two hours. It turns out that my husband is a natural, and consistently nailed the target marks and bullseye almost every time he threw it! I managed to get ONE axe into the board after being there approximately 20 minutes in, and not one went in after that. I did improve my form tremendously over the remaining hour and a half though, according to our wonderful axe masters, Danielle and Elena. Danielle was spirited, loud, and pushed me to really challenge myself in nailing the target and solidifying my form. Elena quietly shared tips from the background at first, but eventually grew louder in supporting me "beating" my husband's score by taunting him as he threw. It was Elena's first day - we had NO idea - she was a TERRIFIC master. We had a blast. The instructors were lovely, and we couldn't have been more pleased! A few tips: They do have signs when you walk in that say "If your axe master gives you a good tip, we suggest you do the same." They are a NO CASH facility (meaning, they sell water bottles and t-shirts, etc., but only for purchases via debit or credit cards, BUT, there is an ATM (for tip money, obviously!) Danielle told us that they "Groupon match" so if you call the place, you can tell them you want to match the Groupon price and it shouldn't be an issue. I will say that we paid via Groupon, but then had to go to the website to select an appointment date, at which point we were charged a $4 booking fee!!! I felt that was ridiculous. Perhaps going directly through the axe throwing place will eliminate this fee (or not - haven't tried it yet). If you have the opportunity to do so, go during the day. We had the ENTIRE place to ourselves, which meant lots of attention from our trainers without any interruption and noise from other groups. (We were warned this place gets packed on the weekends and with a BYOB policy, you know where I'm going with this...) We're definitely going again! I'm thinking this would be a great "big year" birthday party - 30, 40, etc. or just a celebratory place in general. Enjoy! read more

I had such a fun time for my friends birthday. We were a big group so we rented 6 lanes. It was so much fun. Our leaders were Nick , Gavin and Omedeo. They kept it fun and relaxed. I would have loved to give this place a five star review, but frankly the management is terrible. Our axe master Elena was amazing, everything I would've asked for considering I'm a girl who has never thrown a hatchet before. She took the time to explain to us what we were doing and how to do it, and gave us encouragement as we were learning the process. She stuck with our team even though the venue was understaffed, and gave us her full attention. We had a great time, with the exception of the management giving us grief over a scheduling issue which they created. They berated our ace master in front of us and replaced her - which I felt was unprofessional. Overall we had a great time, and we really appreciated the attention that Elena gave to us! read more

TITLE: Couples and Small Groups Be Aware COMMENTS: If you are a couple or small group of people, be advised you will be grouped with other people, without notice, for your axe throwing reservation. Even if you are going to Bury the Hatchet at a non-busy time or day. Three of us went to Paramus on Sunday, 6/23. A day which was not busy at all. We had been to Bury the Hatchet before but unfortunately, our experience on Sunday was not enjoyable at all for us. Our previous time was also on a Sunday. There were five of us and we had our own "lane" for throwing. There was a couple next to us and they had their own lane. So based on that, we expected to have our own lane on 6/23. However without being previously told, we were grouped with six other people. These people were nice and the staff (axe master) was friendly, but we spent more time sitting around waiting than throwing. Seems now there is a policy where a minimum of nine people are required per lane. This is not specified on their web site, it was not mentioned when I made our reservation and it was not mentioned when we first walked in So, if you are a small group expecting to enjoy your own group's company and have fun, take notice, you may spend more time sitting around looking at your cell phone while you wait for strangers in your newly formed large group. read more

This was definitely something fun and new to do! I went with my girlfriends and we had a blast! Get there a few minutes early to check in as the line builds up and everyone has to sign the waiver. It's BYOB and food/snacks, some people even had food delivered. There are picnic style tables set up for each "area", so you have space to sit or hang with your group. They do sell some small snacks but they dont take cash (kind of annoying to charge $1). I did notice that some people working there were better at getting the groups pumped up and engaged than others were. Some groups were really making a great game at it and our guy barely kept the score. We only went with 4 people. I suggest going with a bigger group so you aren't going up to throw the ax every other minute. It does get tiring after a bit. But I would highly recommend this place! Lots of fun! read more

What a fun night doing something new a different! We had a group of ten and everyone enjoyed it so much! We arrived, signed the waivers, and were taken to our lane. Our axe master showed us how to throw the axes and gave helpful tips throughout the night. He was excellent and was like a part of the group! There are two targets so two people go at a time. We practiced first, then had a competition. Jason kept score and suggested different games/contests. So much fun! There was a picnic table in front of the lane to put our food and drinks and a cubby wall to put our jackets. Overall, we were laughing all night. Great time! Highly recommend! Overall fun experience with a few issues. We arrived 15 minutes early as directed and did not receive our training for another 30 minutes. We noticed groups coming in after us were already beginning. We had two lanes and it took them 30 minutes to set up which cut into our axe throwing time. Our two axe masters were nice and informative. However there was a lack of communication between the employees. We were told by our axe master that we would be compensated for our time, but another employee from the front desk kept telling us to "wrap it up" before our time would be up. Just as our time ended they already sent another large party to our lanes who were setting up at our tables before we even cleaned up which rushed us. Overall, it was a fun time. I would go back in a few months when all the kinks are ironed out. read more
