Small piece of cotton from a Qtip that was in my ear.
    Jeff S.

I do indeed like Dr. Burrows, however his name is on the practice and you are only as good as your weakest link. I went in for some weird cracking and fluttering in my ear. One of his PA's checked my ear and said it was a film on my eardrum, not wax but a film. Gave me a really expensive antibiotic ear drop to use for it. Upon using the drops the very first time my ear completely plugged to where I couldn't hear at all out of it. I used the drops for 4 days and not 1 bit of change other than complete silence in it. I quit using it as prescribed and slowly my hearing came back 2 days later, but back to the cracking noises again. I went back in for a follow up, this time with Dr. Burrows. He checked it out and said that I should consult an ENT. So I waited a few weeks to really think about it. During that time I received another bill in the mail from Dr. Burrows for extra charges. On top of my $45 copay they want more than my insurance pays for a standard office visit with a PA. Then a re-evaluation with Dr. Burrows for him to tell me that I should go see an ENT. They put times on my visit and tried to charge for that.... because I waited in your office for you you charge me 30+ minutes to see you for 5 of those minutes. This is all on top of each $45 dollar copay that was paid before each visit. Standard visits, nothing special. So today I go to a new Primary who I'm glad I did. 2 minutes into looking and talking about my ear, he said he saw something floating in my ear. Let's do a flush and see if I can wash it out he says. 1 1/2 syringes later out it came, a small piece of cotton from a Qtip and my ear is back to normal. What a joke Dr. Burrows I liked you in Glendora when it was just your small outfit. You should be ashamed of your staff. Billing department excluded.

Not even how can I help you or anything. In her defense, I think she was new. I even heard one of them talking bad about the person on the phone while she had her on hold. Kind of unprofessional. I like the staff very much.

If I had to sum up my experience in a few honest words they would include, sweet staff, ill…read moreequipped, and unhelpful. Aside from the staff not being able to help coordinate with my insurance (not entirely their fault), they failed to mention they would not be able to get me a simple tetanus shot as they do not carry on hand before I arrived half a week after making an appointment. When the doctor asks why I came to see him apparently " because I haven't seen a physician in 4 years and I just found out I have to leave the country in two days for a few months and I want to make sure I'm not dying" wasn't a very good excuse as his questions were " do you feel sick anywhere?" ..."no?" ..."Okay thank you for coming in" To convince them to even take simple blood test or anything at all being an incredulous uphill battle In again explaining,"I just want to make sure there is something wrong that's obvious" Not to mention their understanding in how schedules worked as the doctor felt that casually strolling in at 11:25am for a 10:15am appointment was perfectly acceptable. And when they did receive simple test result the day before I left the country their policy of disclosing the information to me is only possible with me coming back to the clinic as they cannot be discussed on the phone. Using the phrase "I understand you are leaving the country sir but if you can't find it in your schedule to come on in we can't tell you". (Not how schedules work) However it was acceptable for their practice to put the phone on hold and ask the doctor standing right beside them if it's okay to tell me anything at all, to where he was Insistent it is not possible to tell me if anything is wrong enough for me to need to come back in. Again, very friendly staff. But will not recommend and will not return.

Our family eventually stopped seeing him after 3 years of being under his care. We went to him because it was hard to find doctors who spoke Spanish in our area at the time. I'll start with the worst. My mom used to be really concerned for her health. Over time we realized her concerns were signs of what she's now developed, diverticulitis and other digestive issues. She often came in with pain and explained her concerns. Dr. Castellanos would tell my mom that she was fine and to take ibuprofen. Any time she came in it was the same thing even though her symptoms progressed - continue to take ibuprofen. Eventually she told my mom she was too worried and was a bother. We finally stopped going to see him when she used the restroom and found blood in her stool. She developed ulcers in her throat and stomach that were very painful when eating. After we stopped going to see him we found out all of her symptoms were the beginning of diverticulitis. In 2009 she ended up going to the ER because she was heavily bleeding when she used the bathroom. A diverticula had burst open and it was discovered she has 3 total that had developed. She was taken to emergency surgery. She's suffered through diverticulitis ever since with multiple ER visits. Dr. Castellanos was negligent as a doctor when presented with symptoms. He could have referred her to a gastroenterologist but never did. We had HMO at the time and eventually switched to PPO but it was after dealing with him. For my own case, I developed gastro issues around 12 and realized I had sensitivity to certain foods that lead to a lot of gas and odd noises in my intestines. I felt shy about it as a kid but was worried because I didn't want to sit in class having those noises come from my intestines because well... it was awkward. My side of the classroom could hear my gas issues and I didn't understand what was causing it. When I told him he blew me off and told me to eat more fiber. I didn't bother more about it or ask because I was too ashamed to ask more. Years later I realized I had food sensitivities and that I need to be careful to avoid dairy. All of this to say - I would absolutely NEVER recommend anyone to see Dr Castallanos. My mom could have sued him for negligence but decided not to. Seeing him still in practice now and talking to family about health made me 20 years later have to go back to write this.

Lisa Thomsen, MD is a Family Medicine Specialist* in Glendora, CA and has many years of experience…read morein the medical field. She graduated from University of California School of Medicine - San Francisco medical school in 1987. She is affiliated with Emanate Health Partners that includes Foothill Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Thomsen cares for people of all ages, at all stages of life rather than focusing on the treatment of one disease or patient population. When necessary, she will provide referrals for conditions that require the expertise of a specialist. My overall patient experience is broken up into components that I use to evaluate my physicians. The first component would have to be physician thoroughness. This actually starts at check in. Her staff is courteous, polite and very efficient. After collecting any information regarding changes in my medical insurance information they collect any necessary copay and then offer me the opportunity to sit in the waiting area. Dr. Thomas is a single practitioner and has to handle her scheduled patient load but must also deal with patient emergencies so the time it takes to see the Doctor can vary. This is to be expected and I understand the complications of sudden emergencies. When it's my turn I'm taken to a private room and my temperature is taken, I'm weighed and my blood pressure is checked. If I'm there for a physical I'm asked to get into a smock that makes the exam go more quickly and then I wait to see the Doctor. When Dr. Thomsen enters the examination room I have her complete attention and she is very professional. If I've had a blood test she goes over the results with me and makes sure that I understand what everything means. A printed copy of the results is given to me for my records.. The next element is their ability to answer my questions. Dr. Thomsen has always answered my most penetrating questions completely. She doesn't pull any punches, I hear what I need to hear and I appreciate that. My next element addresses the clarity of her instructions to me when there is something I have to do to get better. She has a wonderfully dry sense of humor and when she pointed out that I needed to get a Tetanus booster shot and I made noises like it might take me time to go get it she talked about how horrible it was to die of lock jaw. Attention focused, I got the shot on my way home at our local pharmacy. Follow-up is my next most important element and Dr. Thomsen is wonderful in her follow-up and follow-through. I recently needed to visit a pain management specialist and a neurosurgeon and Dr. Thomsen made a follow up appointment while I was still in her office. My next element has to do with the amount of time the doctor spends with me as the patient. Dr. Thomsen is very good about being with me for as long as it takes to accomplish everything that must be done without making me feel rushed through the process and finally I take the doctor's attitude towards me and my medical issues as a very important measure of the physician's performance. Dr. Thomsen is actually fun to visit. She makes seeing a doctor a valuable experience and she never talks down to me and she never makes me feel stupid or ill at ease. If something comes up during my visit that requires her to leave the room she doesn't share anything about another patients distress but she does make it clear that she must see to a pressing problem and I've never felt like I was left dangling while someone was treated ahead of me except in cases where it was clear that there was an emergency. I highly recommend Dr. Thomsen if you are looking for a new Family Physician. *A family practitioner is a doctor who specializes in caring for people of all ages, at all stages of life.
