24 Hour Fitness - Paramus

Unfortunately, I'm not God's favorite... so I have to work out to maintain my figure... which…read morebrings me to my 8 year rollercoaster of a relationship with 24 Hour Fitness. I first joined in 2018 and it's sad to see how downhill the corporation has gone. The glory days ended shortly after the COVID pandemic. Since then, they've closed over 7 NJ locations, cut down opening hours, cut down on group classes, removed towel service, and have limited sauna and pool hours. I understand that it took time for gyms to recover and get back into full swing. But it's 2025 now. There's way too much competition in the fitness industry for 24 to be operating the way it is. I switch between the Paramus and Englewood Cliffs location, but I prefer this one since it's much bigger and has later hours. My biggest ick? The gym is not maintained well at all. Machines, equipment, hand dryers, and bathroom sinks are broken down for months. Dumbbells and plates are scattered everywhere, which is not 100% the employees' fault. There's a constant foul smell in certain areas, most likely due to broken pipes. The entire facility needs a deep cleaning from head to toe. What are we paying a maintenance fee for? Come on... Putting the negatives aside, there are some positives. *The Paramus location is spacious and has two floors. *The floor has all of your basic equipment: treadmills, bikes, stairmasters, squat racks, barbells, benches, dumbbells, kettlebells, TRX, cables, and machines. I can recommend this gym for beginner to intermediate lifters. It's not a bodybuilder or powerlifting gym. *Their Zumba classes are SO MUCH FUN. Don't judge a book by its cover... get in there!!! Take Lucia, Lynn, or Melissa's classes. Check the website for the full class schedule. *There's a basketball court, pickle ball games, and a racquetball court. *They have a sauna, steam room, pool, and showers with limited hours. I only use the sauna and it's relaxing when it's not super crowded. *My membership allows me to have access to other regional locations as well as bringing guests. Pricing is a bit all over the place. It all depends on when you join, what kind of membership you have, and what sales/promotions are going on. Some members pay $24 or $34 a month, while others are paying $54. It's best to ask the front desk what the lowest rate is. Overall, it's not the worst gym in the world. It gets the job done for my fitness routine. I just wish the maintenance was a lot better and that they would have later hours. Honestly, I've been thinking about finding another gym. If it weren't for the friends and community I've made and my lower price rate, I would have left awhile ago. I'm willing to spend more $$$ on a membership for a much better experience.

And I need to do specific things. 1st day they also made mistakes about training and other things. Sky tried to make it better and I appreciate her for that. But only two days there and already full of mistakes and apologies. I signed up for two years and I really really hope it wasn't a mistake. Everyone so far has been very nice. I really enjoy being a member at The Gym. The space is always clean,…read morethe equipment is modern, and the staff is friendly, but what truly makes my experience special is my trainer Monica. Before working with her, I had never strength-trained. She taught me the mind muscle connection. As a runner with a few imbalances, I really value how she builds in mobility, flexibility, and functional strength so I move and feel better overall. In five months, the progress has been amazing. Monica plans every session thoughtfully, challenging but never overwhelming, and always tailored to my needs. Her coaching style is the perfect blend of clear instruction, supportive energy, and just the right amount of push. What really sets her apart is her holistic approach. As a certified yoga teacher, she brings mindfulness and stress relief into each session, making every workout feel like a full reset. And as a chef with nutrition certification, her advice and meal plans are realistic, sustainable, and never restrictive. I couldn't ask for a better trainer. Monica is knowledgeable, caring, and genuinely dedicated. I highly recommend her.

Went all the way down to join the club and Frank was extremely unwelcoming, so I will not be…read morejoining or coming back to that club...ever **Thanks for your response Andrew and thanks for the invite to keep MY review up. You need to get the facts straight first before you jump the gun on how friendly Frank was to me because that's simply NOT the case... My ID is 100% valid. Im retired like I told him several times This is what I clearly told Frank a year ago and he said that it was" no issue at all" ..So I ended up coming back to the club a year later to finally join up. He asked me for ID which I showed him, then he started to say oh didn't you come in here a year ago etc, so I said yes I did. He then tells me "oh your ID says retired you can join at the full rate" and "I told you last time that im not giving you the discount we offer ...(that's not true at all ), What he said was that it was NO ISSUE".. He started to examine my ID, hold it up to the light literally about 5 different times ,,,Not sure what that was about...I said Frank, " WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH MY ID- YOURE EXAMINING IT LIKE ITS A FAKE $100 BILL OR SOMETHING, I said is there an issue?????..and he says " OH NOTHING I WAS JUST LOOKING AT IT. He then continues to say he's not giving me the discount and he told me this last year. I said NO PROBLEM...I was leaving, asked him for my ID back, and he started taking pictures of my ID with his phone... Maybe you can clear that up for me Andrew..what was that about after I said no problem and was clearly leaving the club with my coat on. Why did he start taking pictures of My ID? I mean I could care less that you or him think my ID is not valid, I could care less about any discount, or joining your club..Thats not the point at all.. I just didn't appreciate the way I was treated..PERIOD. Its really as Simple as that..I hope this clears it up for you. My experience was not good.

Life Time seems to have popped up overnight and taken over the luxury gym space. I first saw an ad…read morefor a free introductory class at this location which is how I learned of them and then I saw that they also have a location at Penn station. For my introductory class, I signed up for their Core Pilates. It was really difficult to sign up. I had a hard time getting in contact with anyone (it took about 4 attempts). But when I finally did, the sign up process was easy. They had a lot of classes to pick from, including Pilates, Barre and cardio classes. I didn't realize when I signed up that this was a reformer class. I usually do mat Pilates, but there were a few other beginners in the class and the teacher was very patient and nice. The great thing about the reformer machine is that you can turn up or turn down the intensity of the workout according to where you're at. It does take more coordination than I'm used to being on the machine, but it was fun! The teacher helped make adjustments so I could get the maximum benefit, which I appreciated. The Hackensack facility was really nice and big. They had complimentary lockers and towels and the changing room and restroom were both clean. The membership is kind of steep at $279 per month, but they do have discounts for 26 years old and under an 65 years old and over at their other locations.

DECEPTIVE BILLING PRACTICES -- BE CAREFUL BEFORE SIGNING ANY AGREEMENT…read more After years of being a loyal member with no issues, I was suddenly charged an additional $19.50 fee with no notice or explanation. When I asked about it, I was told it was a "glitch in the system" that overcharges customers -- but that I'd need to talk to the manager to resolve it. To prevent future problems, I even put a new card on file. Before following up, I contacted my bank (Chase), and they confirmed there was no reason my recurring payment -- successfully processed more than 28 times -- should have declined. When I spoke with the manager (Andrew), he gave multiple conflicting explanations: first a system glitch, then a bank issue, then a declined card, and finally said he had no control because billing is through ABC Financial. When I asked how the issue would be fixed, I received no clear answer or solution. Instead, the manager became aggressive and ended the conversation by yelling: "GET THE F*** OUT, IT'S TOO EARLY FOR YOUR BULL****." Immediately, I asked again to speak with the owner or anyone capable of addressing the situation. I even reached out through social media. After one month, radio silence. Today, I received another notice: my card supposedly "did not go through," and there is no a $9.50 late fee and another $19.50 charge added on top. I'm genuinely disappointed. If the business needs to raise prices, be honest about it -- don't hide behind deceptive billing practices or "system glitches." I enjoyed being a member, but I can't support a company that refuses accountability, overcharges loyal customers, and treats them disrespectfully.

There are so many things I love about this gym including the staff, other members, class variety, and supportive trainers. It's very clean, and new gym equipment is often added. Recently, they built an additional weight room as well. Further, Andrew and Sam listen to feedback and always try to accommodate members' needs. In terms of trainers, I have worked with Don, Amanda, and Taylor, and they all work hard to tailor workouts to the client, being especially mindful to find alternatives if the client has injuries. I highly recommend the Retro Fitness Fair Lawn location.
