Are beginners welcome? I'm an extremely out of shape mom of two, 28yo, I'm not good at a gym by myself because I stick to my comfort zones which is just the treadmill and a few machines, I can barley do a squat :/, but I'm looking to lose around 60lb

I got a personal trainer. With two little ones, I decided it's time I get healthier. But, what do I know about fitness?! From day 1 - I was put at ease by Nick. He met with me, talked to me about my goals and discussed what sort of options were available to me. He never once made me feel like it was a hard sell - more, he was here to answer my questions and encourage me. Most importantly, he assured me that this wasn't going to be something that was going to drive me away. The team was going to work with me at my pace. I decided I'd go three mornings a week - totally crazy, right?! Now, I work with Vince three early mornings a week. Vince is awesome! He's fun to work with, super knowledgeable - always taking the time to explain things to me. And, most importantly, he's encouraging. I'm nowhere NEAR as advanced as some of the people I see, but Vince makes me feel like I have a place there. Just a few months ago, I would have NEVER thought you'd EVER find me in a gym. Now, I look forward to going!

It's been amazing experience until I attended Shay's Tread 50 on Friday. This is not a an OT class this is a bro gym with yelling and what Shay calls his "OG" members. The music is beyond loud with heavy bass and filled with curse words, sex, and songs demeaning women. There is no variety. The tread 50 is the only OT class I have not attended. I had no way of knowing the treads get cards (which weren't set up or given out). Shay never said anything. The screens were off so I couldn't even see what block it is. After about 15- 20 minutes of no instruction, I went to ask the front desk about instructions and asked if the music could change to something not objectifying women. I also made the comment I could have worked at home for free with the same instructions. I was given a card and the desk agent spoke to Shay. Another 10 minutes went by, and I went to ask the front desk if there could be some variety. I've attended a lot of OT, and there typically is some variety. Shay then proceeding to come up to me, while I was working out to tell me off for coming to his class. He made a big deal of telling me Friday nights were his and he runs it differently from every other OT coach and location. He told me off for not asking him about the tread card or instructions. Basically, making it seem like it was my fault for not knowing the rules of "his" gym. He made it out to be my fault for not having been to a Tread 50 or one of his classes before. When I told him I hadn't been to a tread 50, he rolled his eyes. He also chewed me out for talking to the desk agent instead of him (he was preoccupied broing out with the lifters) When I called him out on he put his hand on my elliptical, stopping it, and accused me of using "client privilege" and told me he'll be taking to management about this. He went up in emotion and I felt like he was trying to intimidating me. Shay made it very clear this is his gym on Fridays he runs it his way. I pay for a membership to Orange Theory not Shay's gym. I recommend any other studio or just going to Barre

They were motivating, professional, and made the class feel welcoming, which I genuinely appreciated. However, I was disappointed with my experience outside of the workout. I was told the class would be a free trial, but afterward I was charged $30 to the card I had on file because I didn't purchase a membership that day. I had been clear that I planned to buy a membership when I returned in about two months, yet I was repeatedly told that I "wasn't local," even though I live only five minutes away. That part of the experience felt misleading and uncomfortable, and unfortunately came across as a bit of a bait and switch. While I truly liked the instructor and the class itself, the way the situation was handled afterward rubbed me the wrong way and ultimately made me hesitant to move forward with a membership. I hope this feedback helps, because the workout itself was great. I just wish the communication and policies around trial classes had been clearer and more consistent.

Their goal is to get you in, get you an awesome workout, and then get you on with your day, feeling like you did something awesome. The workouts themselves are great - at the end of a long day, I've got decision fatigue and it's so nice to know that I will be told what to do for an hour, given everything I need to be successful at it, and then empowered to do my best. Now, OTF Cedar Mill is a special place. I'm sure it looks like every other Orange Theory studio, but the coaches and staff simply make it different. You're known by name, they know what side of the room you prefer or what piece of equipment you like to start on. As for the members, I haven't come across an a**hole yet (despite feeling like I'm a magnet for that type of person). The members here are all happy to be making the most of their workout in, and aren't "on the make"; there's no posturing or performing, because that's not what OTF is about. It's about you, your hour, and your personal desire to get healthy.

I didn't want to write a review until I really had some time to reflect. I took one Saturday boot camp class but got turned off. It was fun until I got to the back room, run by a big, bald guy (Deshawn, I think?) who thought it would be fun to embarrass me by obnoxiously shouting out, "Let's go, Gossip Girl!!"All I was doing was asking my neighbor what to do since he certainly didn't explain what he wanted. Just assumed. Imagine how I felt being new at the gym and a first-timer at boot camp. He walks around with a constant pissy look on his face, always looking at his phone, playing with his keys, or in his office (third one on the left), looking at his monitor. The other trainers are very nice and pleasant. Then, of course, you have your typical creepy, old man gym-rat, who struts around like he owns the gym, refuses to clean his machines, and mansplains to women how to use THEIR machines LOL. Yep, ladies, he's there! I took a few of their Zumba classes. The instructors are very nice but they barely play Latin music or demonstrate any type of good, Latin dance steps. So the Zumba classes are basically just aerobic classes. Still a workout. Also, the vertical blinds in there have been broken forever and the sun comes right in, making that room very hot. Cleanliness - it's pretty clean in most places. I did watch a trainer "cleaning" the treadmills last week and he skipped over the nasty cup holders completely on ALL of them. Also - the front doors are disgustingly filthy on the outside. Haven't been cleaned in at least a year. Just sayin'. Helpful hint - wipe down your machines BEFORE you touch them. Most of the people do NOT clean up their sweaty machines when they're done.

Melanie's profile caught my eye on the website of Bakar fitness. I have always been on the petite side naturally and one of my goals was to be able to gain muscle and be strong. I never thought it was possible for me to be very strong being a 5'3 and naturally skinny person. Melanie definitely proved me wrong! My proudest moment was when I was able to deadlift 185lbs (I was myself 107lbs). While the number of pounds gained/lost definitely shows progress and reflects great milestones in one's personal health journey, training with Melanie has helped me look at health beyond numbers. Training with Melanie has had cascading positive effects in my life. I have become more disciplined when it comes to my health which in turn has improved my diet, reduced my anxiety, helped with my insomnia. Melanie is definitely unique in her approach. I have had several trainers where training means 1 hour of working out with them every week. Melanie is not your average trainer. She cares deeply about her clients and goes above and beyond for them. Outside of our 1 hour of training, to give an example of how Melanie came through as a coach for me - She gave me a nutritional program and kept me accountable. I broke my wrist from a bike ride; Mel helped me train my lower body in isolation for multiple months which helped me stay healthy physically and emotionally. I also had a shoulder surgery from a sports injury. I experienced a lot of atrophy and stiffness after the surgery. Melanie has supported me over the last 2 years to build back my strength and range of motion. I can do pull ups again! I have gained a lot of strength and muscle with her programs. Melanie is not a trainer that just cares about the number of pounds dropped/gained or to just get you high numbers for squats or deadlifts. She is very cognizant of injuries, she puts a lot of focus on conditioning and stretching and taking care of your body like it is a temple. She is extremely educated about anatomy. These qualities differentiates Melanie's programs from just another personal training experience. People often think having a personal trainer is not worth the money. Why pay someone when you can google exercises/programs. Having done my share of googling programs and investing in a personal trainer like Melanie, I can definitely say I am better off with Melanie. I look at health differently now and investing in having an expert like Melanie has definitely been the right choice and the returns have been more than worth it.

She is knowledgeable, non judgmental, kind and tailors the training for me! She always takes into account my aches , pains, post surgical condition, schedule, events, nutrition - you name it - Coach Melanie has always made adjustments that help me in my journey. I am so impressed by her! I met Coach Melanie at the UCSF Bakar Fitness Center when I barely exercised after a cervical spine surgery years ago. I was having back and nerve pain and I hadn't done a triathlon or run in eons, couldn't do a push-up and didn't exercise regularly. After working with Coach Melanie I strength train consistently ( super important for us all!), completed the sprint distance Honolulu triathlon, a couple of 10k's and few metric century rides and am on my way to more! My goal is to one day complete the iron- person distance tri and if anyone can help me get there it's Coach Melanie. We talk over nutrition I even meal prep now - not something I did before. I've had a few trainers over the years but Coach Melanie is the absolute best! I also really respect her values and am impressed by her own health, wellness and fitness journey. She's a fantastic person! Start training with Coach Melanie now to progress in your journey - no matter your level. You'll not regret it
