(In my defense, I am carrying an iced latte.) This is not your typical suburban mall. There are no fluorescent lights illuminating a food court full of teenagers eating pretzels. Instead, you'll find restaurants, cafés, valet parking, and enough designer stores to make you briefly consider whether you, too, are the kind of person who needs a silk scarf. The Short Hills Mall somehow manages to feel both luxurious and welcoming. Whether you're there to buy a designer handbag or simply wander around with a coffee and people-watch, there's something lovely about spending an afternoon here. Short Hills Mall is an older mall. It's been around since the 60s as an open shopping mall but later was enclosed sometime in the 80s. There was a renovation in the mid-90s, which was when I first visited the mall as a teen. Of course, we didn't buy anything there because we didn't have money like that, so it was mostly window shopping and going to the Cheesecake Factory for a special occasion. Decades later, I come here with my husband for visits to the Apple Store, Indigo, or Macy's. The Cheesecake Factory is still there, along with other sit-down restaurants like Legal Seafood, Ruth's Steakhouse, and California Pizza Kitchen. Now there is EATALY and a Liv Breads Artisan Bakery and Coffee Bar (associated with the Liv Breads on Essex St in Millburn).
