I'm about to put a ding in that score. I went here over my usual guy because I'm a layman and thought maybe brakes required a special skillset. I wanted to get it done right. I brought it in and was told the brake pads- or whatever- are worn down and are pretty much just metal on metal, in the front wheels. The rear brakes aren't great but I could put those off for now. I was told it would cost $550, and that that would mostly be in parts. I grimaced and took the hit. A week later, my brakes aren't working so well. Something about air in the line, everyone tells me, because the pedal depresses almost entirely to the floor before I get any braking traction. I call the shop and describe it. The guy tells me that doesn't sound like air in the line at all, it sounds like the... something, I forget, and it'll need replacing and lots of work. At this point I start to see what's going on here. I say "I'll think about it" and hang up. I brought the car to my usual guy. He says Arc Garage did a crap job and didn't reconnect the hoses correctly and sprayed (something) on the (something), which I was made to believe was a bad move. He asked what they charged and I told him, and he said "Oh, you got ripped off so bad. Oh wow. That was a $200 job." He then told me the fix he'd just done was $50 and to come and get it. I won't be making this mistake again. Also, what the hell Yelp, please don't lead me astray like that.

I had driven on a flat, and if you're unaware, this can rapidly degrade the quality of your drive. You can wear a CB joint, your axel, or your rotor, if I recall, and too much wear on these can do immense damage to your car's future. I had replaced two of my tires and still felt a wobble. How could it be the tires, I thought? This is why College Street Motors' experience comes into play. The car might as well be a multi-piece orchestra, with brake drums, piston percussion, and wheel woodwinds. I don't intend to go over the top with this metaphor, because it sounds like a bunch of noise and shaking for me. The mechanic left me a very detailed note, describing how there was nothing more discernible than the loud noise coming from the tires I had yet to replace. No wobbling due to damage to other parts of the car. Plus, I believe they warranty their work, maybe I'm just thinking of my AAA membership. After my tires were replaced, I was relieved at how right they were. As internal combustion engine drivetrain cars are complex, so are electrical cars in their own way. It's a world I have yet to get into, or may never dig deep enough to really gain a foothold of experience. Luckily, there're mechanics just down the street for me that took only a bit of time to diagnose the problem, find a tire match for the ones I had just gotten new, and then both install and balance. I bet their experience pays dividends to other customers, too, who are hoping to make sense of a new problem with little labor and diagnostics. There was no apology for their oversight on not confirming that they had the correct parts needed and no discount for my inconvenience for having to wait. I was a 1st time customer. The service for a full synthetic oil change and tire rotation including tax was 105.97. I chose to support a local shop instead of a chain with thoughts that I would be supporting a small business and getting customer service that generally goes along with a privately owned company that wants to maintains a great reputation.

I called Tilton Automotive first thing Monday morning and asked if I could be seen as soon as possible. Although they said they were busy, they made time and scheduled me to come check out my car because they understood my urgency. They were caring, honest, and professional. I felt like I was treated respectfully. They identified the issue with my front axel, and in the very same day, obtained the parts, performed the repair, and called me back before end of business! Last year when my check engine light came on and I brought my car to them, they told me that my whole transmission needed replacing right then, because it could fail in the next few months. (I've waited to give this review for that reason). They were urging me to get the work started right then, a cool $2800 right after I was out of work with a cancer diagnosis, and in desperate need of a working car to get to Boston for life-saving treatment, which I even told them. I was panicking more than any other time in my life, so I went out of town to get a second opinion. The other shop I found (in Springfield) tinkered with it for a few minutes for free and assured me it would be ok and was not a safety issue. 14 months later, my transmission is still doing just fine. I wish I had the resources to talk to a lawyer; this is unconscionable business practice. It put me under even more totally unnecessary stress than I was already facing, and it wasn't even true. And for the service of looking at the transmission, they charged me over $90 without mentioning before that it would cost so much. Even while they were explaining all this work I supposedly needed, they treated me like I was wasting their time, because they (I think Dave) kept saying "normally we work on cars that need $5,000-$7,000 in work", like mine was barely worth the dirt on the tires to them because it's old and basic. I still can't believe they tried to do that to me while I was facing a threat like cancer, needing to know that my car could get me to appointments safely.

Went to this location about 5 years ago. All they did was throw parts at my car. They never…read moreactually diagnosed the issue. My check engine light came on and my motor began to act up when I shifted into lower gears. My mother always brought her vehicles here for inspections and no one in my family likes Jacksons auto body in town. I brought it in and they told me they were going to change out the coils in my Pistons and change the wires on the spark plugs (which they had already done when I brought my car in for a tune up months prior and they tried to charge me for). So I picked up my car and drove home and when I shut the car off all of the oil in the engine drained into my driveway because their mechanic crimped the valve cover and rather than fixing it he let me drive home and hope nothing would happen. So had the car towed back because I wasn't going to put oil back in my car to have it leak on the way there. They fixed the issue they created and offered me a free oil change certificate (like I was going to come back) and I brought my car to an authorized dealer of my vehicle. I would not recommend this location to anyone.
