This place has a very bad rap when you ask around for a good reason. They largely benefit from being the only transmission service in town. Last year when my check engine light came on and I brought my car to them, they told me that my whole transmission needed replacing right then, because it could fail in the next few months. (I've waited to give this review for that reason). They were urging me to get the work started right then, a cool $2800 right after I was out of work with a cancer diagnosis, and in desperate need of a working car to get to Boston for life-saving treatment, which I even told them. I was panicking more than any other time in my life, so I went out of town to get a second opinion. The other shop I found (in Springfield) tinkered with it for a few minutes for free and assured me it would be ok and was not a safety issue. 14 months later, my transmission is still doing just fine. I wish I had the resources to talk to a lawyer; this is unconscionable business practice. It put me under even more totally unnecessary stress than I was already facing, and it wasn't even true. And for the service of looking at the transmission, they charged me over $90 without mentioning before that it would cost so much. Even while they were explaining all this work I supposedly needed, they treated me like I was wasting their time, because they (I think Dave) kept saying "normally we work on cars that need $5,000-$7,000 in work", like mine was barely worth the dirt on the tires to them because it's old and basic. I still can't believe they tried to do that to me while I was facing a threat like cancer, needing to know that my car could get me to appointments safely. read more

First rate service, honest, professional, reasonably priced. Took my 2016 Subaru Forester in for a second opinion after the local Subaru dealership quoted me $2200 (and 5-7 days with my car out of service waiting for their attention) on a "must do" transmission repair, telling me that a major unit of the transmission needed replacement. Dave, the owner at Northampton Transmission, quickly concluded only a couple of parts within the unit were bad, replaced them within a few hours the same day, and charged me $700. Dave also stands behind his work, as he later proved when one of the new parts turned out to be a lemon. If I could get this shop to do all my auto repair work, I wouldn't hesitate! read more

Absolutely never go here to get any work done. They've had my vehicle three times now, each time for a week or more, with very few updates as to what is going on/what the problems are. I had my transmission repaired the first time, and there have been continued problems that they have not been able to identify or fix, and after dumping two grand into my car for a two-year warranty on my transmission, it's kind of impossible for me to go elsewhere. Ed, the person I've always spoken to, is incredibly condescending and sketchy, and never gives any info as to the status of my vehicle. I ended up taking my car at a later date to another shop that said the transmission work was shoddy and that they could fix it for less than half of what I was originally charged. These guys are scumbags, do not trust them with your car. read more

I was calling around for a quote to replace the clutch for my 96 VW Jetta and ended up going with Northampton Transmission. I went with them because it seemed like they would do a great job (said they would resurface flywheel) and the pricing was competitive with other shops. They quoted me 800 something. It ended up taking a week longer than expected (not a huge deal - I had something else to drive) but the final total was over 1000. It was around 20-25% higher than the quote. I know clutch jobs are a pain (I've done them before on VWs myself) but a shop that routinely does them should be able to accurately give an estimate as it's a predictable job. 200 bucks is a HUGE DEAL to me, I had bought the car for only 1200 and I was on a very tight budget. I pushed back on the price as it compared to the originally quote but they wouldn't budge and just wanted to run my credit card numbers ASAP as it was towards the end of the day on a Friday. My truck was towed from Lia Dodge Northampton to Northampton transmission on March 5, 2021. I am from Georgia. Due to the Dodge dealership's mechanical incompetence's, I became stranded in town for over a week and a half. I first met Ed (manager) at this point. I told him that I am putting all my faith in him to get me and my truck back on the road. Ed called me later that day. After three hours of diagnosing, 3 of the 6 computer codes had been rectified. I knew at this point, I was in the right place. There were some supply chain delays due to Covid, but ED kept me informed and always did his best to overcome them. My truck came off the lift at 4:30pm on a Friday. After a short test drive, I paid my bill. I got on the highway and drove straight through the night back to Georgia. Around 10:30am Saturday morning Ed called me, I was in North Carolina and still going strong. Ed did not need to call me on his day off, but it shows his commitment to getting me back home to my family. I have driven my truck everyday since the rebuild with NO issues what so ever. I am forever in his debt and the mechanic crew who put my truck back together. These guys are the real deal! read more

My first interaction with Northampton Transmission was in my professional life where I manage and fleet of vehicles that see hard service. The vehicles I maintain are in use long after the warranties expire. When these vehicles need transmission repair, Northampton Transmission has always been up front with the cost and time needed to make the required repair. Away from work I own and operate classic vehicles as my hobby. Northampton Transmission just completed a rebuild on the third project for my personnel use. More than one of the projects that I have had them repair was far from original equipment each presenting their own challenge. Long story short, this is a shop with an owner that you can trust. I can't say enough about how honest, skillful, respectful and great John and his team were! My band played a show in Easthampton on a Thursday night, and on our way to the show, our transmission started throwing error lights. We tried that night to hook it up to the computer at an auto parts store and pull the codes, but our van turned out to be too old for their computer. The next morning, we were facing a seven hour drive to Buffalo, and we didn't want to get on the road without knowing what was wrong with our transmission. So...we were in an unfamiliar town with vehicle troubles that we needed fixed in a hurry. Usually, this is a recipe for getting price gouged, but this was not the case at Northampton Transmission. After calling around, we found these guys, and explained our situation. They told us, "we're backed up today, but bring it in and we'll get our computer hooked up and let you know what we can do." We pulled into their garage around 11. They were telling the truth about being backed up; every lift was occupied, and there were many more vehicles awaiting service in the lot. Nevertheless, they diagnosed the problem, bumped us in line (they even took another vehicle off the lift that was halfway repaired), and took care of our issue. We were back on the road by 1pm. The entire time, they were totally respectful and easygoing. When it came time to pay, I noticed that they had all their prices on the wall by the desk (flat fee for a diagnostic, hourly labor costs, etc...). I quickly checked the price they were charging against what was on the wall, and THEY DIDN'T EVEN CHARGE US EXTRA FOR THE RUSH JOB!!! How cool and honest is that? read more

I just happened to be in North Hampton when my jeep decided to start making crazy noises. I called the guys at Northampton Transmission to see if they had a minute to do a quick look. They got me right in, were very professional and didn't treat me like an idiot because I'm a woman. They took the time to explain everything to me and did their best to keep costs low. Most places would jump to the highest prices fix it but these guys started small to make sure I wasn't over paying. Brought my vehicle into this place because they have the word "transmission" in their name. I may as well brought it to a place that sells pool supplies. The GM, Ed, I believe is condescending and does not provide any updates unless you call and harass him once a week which seems to really piss him off. Seriously why would you put someone in the front of your shop with such a bad attitude? They misdiagnosed my transmission problem which equaled my vehicle being at their shop for 3 weeks and was charged for the parts and services of the misdiagnoses. So I paid three times what should have been paid and not so much as a sorry. When I asked what happed, Ed stated " were in this together". Bull crap, you're the expert that's why I took my vehicle to you. Pay the extra money and go to the dealer, lesson learned. read more

I have driven by Northampton Transmission many times, but didn't have a clue that they weren't much more than a specialty transmission shop; then my transmission light went on. Uh oh. I called my local guy who apologized and said "I can't help you, find a transmission shop." This was just before a long weekend and I was stumped. I called Northampton Transmission and they said they were closing for a week's vacation and were beyond booked. But Ed Berard must have felt the desperation in my voice, and he said, "OK, can you bring it in first thing?" And so began a day of surprises. They immediately diagnosed my transmission light as a fuse, and fixed it pronto. Then, they found a massive oil leak. I admit, I'm not a car person, not even a mediocre car person, I have zero feel for cars, and thought I had noticed something but didn't know how bad it was. They squeezed me in, and fixed the car-killing leak on their absolutely busiest day of the year. At a more than fair price. I can't tell you have grateful I am to Northampton Transmission and to Ed and the very polite, sweet young tech who saved my car. They are incredibly competent and refreshingly modest, and generously compassionate to this grey-haired, car-oblivious woman who cannot find the words to thank them and to recommend them. read more
