This trendy burger spot near downtown San Antonio is definitely worth a try. First off, Burgerteca is at great location by the river that allows you to sit outside & enjoy a meal with good scenery. Only downside to their location is the fact that parking is limited. On my most recent visit, I decided to sit at the bar since it was a warm Saturday afternoon. Upon arriving to the bar, I was greeted by the friendly bar staff & served immediately with a water & presented with a food & drink menu. For my drink, I decided to try the Bigtex punch. A rum based drink that is served in a cool sugar skull themed glass. The drink was good and not too sweet, but not worth the $13 price point. For my food, I decided to not go the burger route & try the Big Tex Crispy Dog. I was extremely satisfied with my choice. The dog is wrapped in a corn tortilla & crispy fried, then topped off with chile con queso, grilled onions, bacon, avocado slices & chipotle lime mayo. The combination of flavors was perfect & made every bite enjoyable. Also ordered a side of fries which were less than impressive, but from what I've read from others I probably should've tried them with the tomatillo ketchup rather than regular. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit to Burgerteca & recommend this place to anyone in the downtown/Southtown San Antonio area. Living in Southtown has it's perks and one of it's biggest perks is Burgerteca. Johnny Hernandez truly outdoes himself with the food, drinks and atmosphere of this little hidden gem. Housed in Big Flats, a hipster apartment complex facing the San Antonio river allows people to try unique hamburgers that are not damaging to your wallet. I went on first friday which they often promote because of all day happy hour. I enjoyed an absolut swedish paloma which came with a free glass that lit up different colors and a margarita. It's ok to sit outside because it's breezy this time of year. I really enjoyed my casual lunch at burgerteca. The restaurant is clean and bright with a lot of outdoor seating. There are also TVs if you are interested in catching a game. For lunch, I got the Mexican street dog, my boyfriend ordered the slider trio, and we shared mole fries. I loved my hot dog and the fries, the flavors were all great and worked well together. I love beets and was so excited to see they have a beet burger here. It's a great vegetarian option! As with all of Johnny Hernandez's restaurants, Burgerteca is beautifully decorated and something about the space just makes you want to keep ordering drinks and hang out for hours. Really good burger place with eccentric burger flavors as I got the al pastor burger. It came with pineapple slices, tomatillo ketchup which is a very flavorful and distinct taste, and manchego cheese. They put al pastor seasoning on the burger to give it that al pastor taco taste. The outdoor seating is safe and it's a nice area to relax and enjoy the Southtown scenery. Definitely recommend if you're in Southtown and want a pretty decent burger. read more

First of all I don't like to leave bad reviews for businesses but on this night I was craving some ice cream and since I was feeling better I asked my husband if we could go out and get dome from Burgerteca since the homemade ice cream is so delicious never disappointed. This place is located in a hip residential area. It's ambiance is pretty cool to include a furry friendly outdoor eating area. The decor inside is SOLID wood slab tables and iron works chairs. The sugar skull themed restaurant is fun. The menu has much to choose from to include al pastor! Enchiladas on the burger or mole burgers. I tried the veggie burger which wasn't the usual bean/veggie patty. This had beets with shredded cabbage and pickled onions. The flavor was so-so. The fries were amazing! Wow. Burgerteca was a great decision after a long day at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. I don't know if it's because we were tired and hungry or if it was just that good, but the Chile Con Queso burger had to have been one of the best burgers I've ever had. It's a really cool thing when you can taste a food's influence. These Mexican flavors were the star of the show and complemented the American style burger perfectly. I am a frequent customer at Burgerteca. I love their fries con queso, they are my favorite! I have tried their enchilada burger, Al Pastor burger, Chilaquiles burger, Chile con queso burger, and La Veggie. There were times that my Patty was dry, but most times they had a lot of flavor. I guess with the extra ingredients and add ons on the burger made it worth it. My favorite of them all is the Chile con queso. Now their alcoholic drinks are really good! The mangonada is huge, their margarita is strong, and there's this drink called El Pelino Fresco that is so sweet and strong. For some reason, I expected this place to be fast casual (Chipotle-style) versus a sit-down restaurant. I came in on a Friday night around 7pm and it was busy, but not full. I ordered the chilaquiles with some chile con queso fries and my inner fat person couldn't have been happier. I had no issues with my burger falling apart or anything being cold like what some other Yelpers experienced. Everything of mine was piping hot and pretty delicious. I was surprised at the size of the burger, to be honest. For the price, I was expecting a bigger burger. But the size, plus the order of fries was filling. The fries themselves were crispy, thick and seasoned well and were tasty on their own. The chile con queso part of it tasted a bit like Velveeta cheese, but when you're hangry and tipsy, that's all you want. I would totally come back here and try out some of their other offerings. I'm thinking some of the harsher reviews for this place were just people expecting way too much. I'm sure if I ordered any of the other items, I would have left here feeling equally happy. I've seen this business pop up quite often on the Yelp feed and decided to venture over to Southtown to see what this place is all about. I had no idea that this was located in the Southtown Flats apartment complex so this was a pleasant surprise that I didn't have to deal with the normal parking fiasco at Southtown. A+ for decor. Then we started ordering the food. I got the Baja Fish burger, my hubby for the Big Tex classic w/ cheese, and we shared the Chili Con Queso Fries. When the food came out, it looked and smelled amazing. I tried my fish baja burger and it wasn't anything special. The bun was nice and fluffy and the sauces were ok but nothing to rant and rave about. My hubby's Big Tex burger had a nice taste to it and was pretty tasty. I was pleasantly surprised. The chili con queso fries were pretty good but I thought it was a little too expensive for what it was ($7.25!!!?!?!?). Our friends who were on a Keto diet and ordered burgers. So, if you would've told me I would be having a tuna burger for lunch today I would've laughed till my tummy hurt. But this burger is no laughing matter it was amazing! They call it the Pacifica and just reading the menu I wasn't sold on it. I did what I normally do when going to a new place. I asked the waitress (who has amazing taste ) what her favorite was and she said the Pacifica. The she said but its seared tuna. I threw caution to the wind and ordered this little jewel and boy was I happy with it! The flavor is amazing! I highly recomend this! I guess if you don't like fish you might not want to but it wasn't real fishy tasting. We also go the fries with the chorizo and cheese and they were wonderful, too. My husband got the El Pastor he said it was all right. But el pastor tacos are his favorite and he would prefer them. I was excited to try this place. I had heard about it from friends and I love anything Mexican inspired. The location was a nice surprise. Total hipster area, feels like Austin. Restaurant decor was awesome and inviting. For old times sake, I ordered a mangonada, since we stopped going to La Gloria because the food was consistently subpar. Drink didn't have the chamoy stick it usually has, but it was initially good. Considering it was a chilly day, the drink quickly went from smoothie consistency to liquid -room temp. It tasted like a thick-from concentrate mango puree drink. Anyone remember drinking those Jumex canned juices back in the day? I didn't even get halfway when I just gave up. Too gross, thick and sweet. We ordered the Mexican street dog, al pastor burger and chile con queso fries. Yuck. Mexican dog was nothing spectacular. It was definitely not authentic street food. The weenie tasted like a thicker version of Costco hotdogs, raw onions, tomato, fake looking shredded cheese and 4 jalapeno slices. It was luke warm when I got it. The cheese was not even slightly warm. The weenie wasn't grilled. I could have just picked this up at my local convenience store. Actually, all 3 items were barely warm/cold when we got them Burger looked appealing, but the tomatillo ketchup flavor was overpowering and tasted more like bbq sauce. The bun was good. Chile con queso fries had an odd sweet flavor, paired with bacon and crema. I think it would have tasted a bit better if they hadn't been cold, but the overall sweet taste of chile didn't work for me. Closest thing I can compare flavor to is if you added strawberry jam on fries?? They use thick cut fries so they are soggy once all the toppings are added. It's definitely something you eat with a fork. I even poked my finger to bottom of dish to see of the bottom layer was warm, and nope. It wasn't super packed, but I don't think they had enough servers for a Saturday afternoon. Our waiter was all over the place taking people's orders and seemed overwhelmed, so we felt bad to complain about the food. Plus, he wa super friendly. It took a long time for us to get bill, so we just sat there and waited. Overall, disappointed in our first experience there. I was too grossed out with the sweetness of the mangonada, that I passed on any dessert. Anyone who knows me, knows I NEVER pass up dessert. Overall, this meal was not worth $48. We stumbled across this place as we were driving around downtown. We were getting hungry so we stopped in to give it a try. We are so glad we did. It had a nice atmosphere, the service was nice, and food was great! The fries with the cheese..is soooooo yummy!!! If you want to try something different with GREAT flavor, you'll want to try this place. They also offer military discounts on Tuesday (I think that's the right day???) The place is very clean. Went to the new Burgerteca last night. Be warned: we got lost because it's in the newer part of Blue Star. I wish I knew that before we walked around the entire complex (but that's our fault). I love the open air look and feel of Burgerteca. We arrived on their opening night, expecting a massive crowd. However, because we were part of the later dinner crew, we were seated within 10 minutes. Three of us were seated on the patio, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The weather was perfect and we could see the river. That was awesome! Here's a breakdown of the evening: Service: Really good. Our server was very nice and was able to keep drinks refilled and the food came out quickly. Food: This is the real highlight. I got the Chile Con Queso Burger. I really enjoyed it. The bun was good--- not too thick. The meat was also just the right thickness and was cooked well. The best part of the meal (which my companion ordered) was the Queso fondido fries. Cheese, chorizo and french fries. You cannot go wrong. I mistakenly ordered regular fries, which tasted fine. The loaded ones just all looked much better. Drinks: We just had regular margaritas. Pretty standard but had lucas/chamoy (I think) on the rim, so that gave it an extra something. Dessert: One of my table mates got a dessert with strawberry ice cream, cinnamon, and bananas. It was good. I forgot how much cinnamon adds to a dessert. This dessert, The Gloria, was perfect for a hot Texas night (even in December). Overall, it was a nice dining experience. Gotta say I kinda liked this place! My girlfriend has had a burger craving recently and found this place. It's pretty easy to get to: parked at the Blue Star complex and walked along the river, which is pretty. Inside it's spacious and very colorful with masks and animals on the wall. The tables are a nice solid wood and another couple was seated with us. I like it when places do that. We split a beet burger called La Veggie and it was good! I think it could have been slightly jazzier in appearance, but I will pretty much eat beet any day of the week. Also ordered some mole fries which were good. The sauce was creamy and savory, and there were pickled onions on top. The sangria was OK and had some fruit in it. They have paletas too which I didn't get because I was stuffed but, I'll make more an effort next time. Overall, the food was tasty and satisfying and all the bright colors made me happy to be there. It'd be nice to pay about 20% less for the meal. I will probably go back, though, and I've been telling my friends at work about it all week! read more

Excited to try out Johnny Hernandez's latest restaurant. Went opening night, but there was no wait. Started with some drinks - the mongonada and the big tex punch - both were delicious and a great start to the meal. The menu has plenty of burgers to choose from and I went with the al pastor because I couldn't pass up the pineapple burger. The wife went with the crispy dog. And we added a side of the molé fries. As expected my burger was amazing - if you are the kind of person that enjoys pineapples whether it's in your tacos or on a pizza you will definitely enjoy this burger. The only complaint I heard from the crispy dog was that the bun was maybe not needed. It already come wrapped in a fried tortilla, so I guess it gives you the option to eat it with or without the bun. So, I'll just move on to the one star reduction. Not that any logical person wouldn't expect fries to get soggy that are drenched in molé, but, well, the fries drenched in molé were soggy. Lesson learned. But the overall flavor was still and delicious. Overall, it was good and we will definitely be back to try the other types of intriguing burgers and cocktails. read more

I am very happy that they had a veggie burger. The taste was good. The poblano added a lot. The color of the patty was great. The bread looks like a lot so I went to hollow it out. Turns out that it is super airy soft bread that does not overpower or overfill. The tomato on top unfortunately stole a lot of the salt so I'd recommend removing it. Also the texture of the patty was too soft. It got crispy on the edges from frying but I'd recommend firming it up with some tvp or something. My husband had the mole burger and said it was good and the beef was cooked to a good temperature. He also agreed that the bread was amazing. We had queso fries which were good. They have a kids menu which is nice. Service was very good especially for being a new place on a Friday night. By far my favorite of the johnny Hernandez restaurants. Unfortunately, after being really excited following Burgerteca on Instagram before they opened, the food is just decent. Was most excited to try the mole fries. The fries, alone, would have been mediocre. The mole was solid, so it made for a good side, but nothing mind blowing. More cheese would have helped. The tuna sandwich was a good idea that's poorly executed. The fish is too big for the bun and constantly falls out. There's so much thin sauce that the bun becomes a soggy mess after 30 seconds. The searing technique on the tuna is poor and leaves you with a warm exterior and ice cold interior. The hot dog is solid but just as good, if not better, at 3 dozen other places in the city. read more

I came here when I was visit from out of town. How I wish we had this little gem in Houston. The decor and ambiance is cool and laid back. The margaritas were delish. I was with kids so I had to limit my drinking. Talking about kids, the kids all enjoyed it. I got the enchilada burger with chili cheese fries. Chili cheese fries are probably my all time favorite food. I don't eat them often because I try to watch my weight. Those fries were heaven. Johnny Hernandez nails it again. It's for amazing decor, bright colors, family friendly, very affordable, and best of all it's freakin delicious! We had the queso fundido fries: 4/5 could have used a bit more chorizo but overall great to share for 3-4 people Pacifica Burger: 4/5 it was so full it was hard to bite. The fish was seasoned great and the sauce on it complemented it perfectly. Only complaint is that the fish was in two pieces which was hard to keep both in at the same time. Chilaquiles burger: 5/5 my personal favorite . Amazing flavors, very filling. Spicy and crunchy and savory all at the same time. Restrooms: 4.5/5 these are shared with the restaurant next door .
