Holy Crab - 1Lb Shrimp Bag

Holy Crab

Incredible seafood at very reasonable prices! Holy Crab offers authentic Acadian Cajun boiled crab,…read moreshrimp, scallops, and fish pots of several varieties and spice levels (cayenne & black pepper stands out more). They also have a few other Cajun specialties, including gumbo (one of my favorites) which has a subtly more Creole taste (tomato & paprika is more forward) and crispy sweet-corn hush puppies (reminds me of Paul Prudhomme's recipe which is more wheat than corn, and has sweet onion). I enjoyed our seafood boil dinner so much, I went back for lunch the next day. I got the Holy Crab sampler which features catfish, oysters, shrimp, a crab cake, fries, and I added a tilapia fillet. All of the fish was expertly prepared, and their batter is a rich and crispy sweet-onion batter with a dusting of corn to add to the texture. The portions were very generous for the price. I also got the egg fried rice, which was very tasty, and filled me up after a long day of walking around. For dinner, we went just after peak hours, and the service was fairly quick (for a seafood boil). It was much busier at lunch, but they were able to prepare and serve the food lightning-fast, even with a number of to-go orders being picked up during service. The staff are friendly, and checked on us regularly to top off drinks (we went with medium spiciness, which was perfect with iced tea). Holy Crab ended up being my favorite stop of my trip in Peoria. The food, service, and prices were all quite good. If I'm in the area again, I will stop here to eat for sure!

Crab legs were tough. Fried shrimp was over done. Combo platter that included fried oysters,…read moreshrimp and crab cake was mediocre. Crab cake was best thing in the combo. Party of 6 and we were all disappointed. Wish I could give a better review.

Review Visit: December 2nd, 2014…read more Stop for wings at Wingstop? Nah, no thanks. Wings and french fries. A seemingly easy combination that shouldn't be hard to mess up at a place that specializes in one of those things. But what I experienced was something that left a bad taste in my mouth for Wingstop, even 6 years later. On a cold and blustery day, my friend and I stopped in for dinner. We were both in the mood for wings, so what better place than to try Wingstop. It was a new experience for me and she recommended it. We walk in and are greeted with a friendly cashier. As I was new here, it took me a bit to get adjusted to the menu and figure out what I wanted to order. Once we placed our orders, we grabbed our sodas and took a seat. After chatting and us both starting to wonder where our food was, the wings and french fries had arrived. I ordered a 10 piece that came with a soda, some fries and dip. I split my wings up into a mild and hickory smoked bbq and upgraded my fries to the seasoned fries... because why not? At first glance, I knew I was in trouble. My fries looked like they were drenched in oils or something. They looked sad and depressing. I took a nervous tug at one of the top french fries and it was evident that there was possibly something wrong. But in my naivete, maybe this is how they were supposed to be. So, I tried chomping down the fries but due to the oil saturation level, I quickly stopped my attempt at eating them. Then I moved on to the wings and it was another sad story. Some of the wings were slopped and soaking in entirely too much sauce and others look like they only had some because they brushed upon the ones that were sopping wet in wings. Again, I put my judgments to the side and prepared to make the best of a bad wing situation. I tried cutting my wings up and using the excess sauce to coat the dry pieces, but that just ended up in failure and frustration. In order to not make a scene and because it was a rare opportunity for my friend and I to get dinner, I didn't make a fuss. It made me wonder why people raved about this place as the food was poorly cooked and the presentation was awful. I reconciled with myself that maybe this is just how Wingstop is. At least the rest of the night was salvaged with laughs and delicious fro-yo at CherryBerry Yogurt Bar on the other side of town. Maybe... just maybe... I will give Wingstop another try.

Review Visit: April 18th, 2016…read more This place definitely garners the attention it deserves. On one of my many trips (with a friend that didn't like being in photos), we stopped for pizza at the recommendation of many people we knew. We walked in on a sunny afternoon with empty bellies and high expectations. We were greeted by a friendly staff and a post-lunch winding down of the restaurant. There were a handful of employees who stopped in for a bite to eat but they all were wrapping up to go back to work. We were seated at a table and given menus and some waters. My friend and I have similar taste buds, so we quickly settled on the Chicken Bacon Ranch pizza. If memory serves me right, I got my half of the pizza with jalapenos. I do love me a bit of a kick to my food. With the lunch rush past us, we got great service as we were really the only ones in there after about 10 minutes. Our waitress was prompt with everything and just great. It wasn't long before our pizza was brought out to us and boy did it look good. It's not stranger on this blog that I love pizza and Garner's was great. Each bite was full of flavor and each slice being exactly what our bellies needed before we started exploring Bloomington. About the only complaint I would have is that Garner's is in a weird location. It seems to be a newly-built area and I am not entirely too familiar with Morton but it seems to be in a weird location. When my GPS was taking us here, I had doubts the address was correct... but I am glad that I was proven wrong. Garner's was worth the hesitation while driving there.

Review Visit: September 14th, 2014…read more Thems some dang good biscuits. After exploring the The Nina and The Pinta boats that were anchored in Peoria, we needed some grub. I asked my dad if he had any specific place he wanted to try. He said he did not. I asked if he wanted to check out Popeye's and that's where we ended up going. It was a new eating experience for us both as Popeye's have just started to pop up in Central Illinois. I typically don't review big chains but I make the exception if they are new to the area. Popeye's is a fast food chicken slinging place. You order your food at the counter and either get it to go or dine in. We opted to dine in as we had the afternoon free. Plus, dining in is part of the experience. We both stuck with a standard combo since we didn't know what to expect. Our combos were fairly basic: chicken, fries, and sides. I opted for some coleslaw and a biscuit to accompany my main food. The place was a bit busy and we did end up waiting awhile for our food to come out. Frying chicken has to take a bit longer to cook than your usual fast food offerings. The wait was to be expected as the restaurant was new and still had that busyness to it that comes with any new place that opens. At long last, our food came out and it looked tasty and smelled delicious. It was about the halfway point through our meal that we broke the silence and said the same thing. This wasn't really worth it. Its not to say the food was awful. Its just that everything tasted so... bland? The chicken tasted like nothing despite the breading. There was a definite lack of spices in the batter or something like that. The french fries were alright, if not a bit soggy for my tastes. Again, that is just a personal preference on the fries. The coleslaw was forgettable but I feel that way about coleslaw in general. Its a side dish I like but not one I ever crave. Again, personal preference there. So, was any of this meal good? Yes. The biscuit of all things. Somehow that biscuit, despite being a bit dry as biscuits usually are, packed a ton of flavor in the puck-shaped baked goodness. I'm not a biscuit lover by any means but this place had me reconsidering that. The thing was just dripping (metaphorically) in butter-y flavor. I strongly debated getting one to go until I saw the line at the counter. We did finish the meal and sat there a little bit longer as we let the food settle. While we sat there, we discussed the cool ships we saw earlier in the afternoon and made some small talk about the lack of enthusiasm we had for our meal. We left and that was our experience. But was that my only experience with Popeye's? Nope. Going a bit off the usual path, I have been back many times with my friend Tim. He loves this place and will pick it as a lunch spot when we hang out. My experience with Popeye's has stayed pretty much the same since my first visit. Their food is just okay with the exception of two things. Their biscuits are my weakness and their new chicken sandwich, in my opinionated opinion, was awesome. I did eventually try it after the hype wore off and it was no longer a matter of life and death trying to order it. That chicken sandwich was seriously one of my favorites. The staff at the Popeye's Tim and I visit (we've visited multiple) do leave a lot to be desired. Each time we've gone, we've gotten less than the bare minimum effort from those working. It seems like none of them want to be there and doing their job is a painful process. We've never had an issue with our food but it does sully the experience when it feels like you are the biggest inconvenience in the world. The last two paragraphs don't factor in to my score but it is something to keep in mind if you are wanting to try Popeye's. I would revise the score to a 2 based on the poor customer service we receive when we go. No amount of love for their biscuits or the chicken sandwich can excuse the attitudes from the staff.

Could improve everything and anything. I tried to go there and when I went through drive through…read moreemployee called me a Karen before I could even order. I was like what the hell.
