My wife ordered the steak with the garlic butter and mozzarella cheese. Their version of something Italian I guess, and asked the woman making it to use pepper jack instead of mozzarella. She replied that there would be an extra charge for that. What??? On a $3 sandwich they charge nearly $10 for. Ridiculous. And my "traditional" steak sandwich was made so poorly that the last 2 bites on either end had no meat as it was all piled in the middle. Add to that the substandard meat they must be using now and adios subway in Flora.

But just west of the headlines, tucked into Bolton like a blues riff in a gospel town, there's S & S Burgers and Blues. And this place? It speaks plain. The grill's hot, the beer's cold, and the vibe is exactly what you need when the day's been long and the truth's been bent. It's laid-back in the way only the South can be, gritty, soulful, and unapologetically real. You don't come here for pretense. You come for a burger that drips down your wrist and a laugh that cuts through the static. This is where you bring people when you want to show them the Mississippi that doesn't make the brochures. The one that feeds you, welcomes you, and sends you back out into the world just a little more human.

We came at the start of lunch hour, and there was a long wait (due to regulars being smarter than us and ordering ahead). The wait was worth it. 11 ounces of beef in a single burger???? Yep. And the seasonings were perfect. Husband and I went bunless, which was a smart choice because it was so filling and we definitely needed room for the fries! Our 12 year old is a self-proclaimed burger connoisseur and he said it was a perfect blend of quality and quantity. He ate all but four bites. (Took the pic on the road so it's a bit blurry.) Our 9 year old didn't order there because he's not a burger guy, but he really loved the friendliness of the staff and the other patrons. The vibe was welcoming and cozy, even for a group of four Texan outsiders.
