Joe’s Take-Out - 1/2 rack ribs

Joe’s Take-Out

The only difficult task when getting food from Joe's Take-out is deciding what to order. The Beef…read moreBrisket (platter or sandwich) is as good as any in the area , and far better than most. It is flavorful and tender, and the sauce takes it over the top. There burgers are first rate (go for the Smash Burger), as are the hot dogs, no matter how you top them off. I especially like the Chili Dog with mustard and onion, the Chicago style dog, and a simple dog with mustard and kraut! The Ribs are very nice, tender and loaded with flavor. There are plenty of tasty sides, and I love the Street Corn, the Collards, the Fried Okra, and Mac & Cheese. Joe's is the type of locally owned restaurant that I love to support. The food and service are first rate. Because it has little street visibility, it's location, is small with no inside seating, and is take out, a number of folks will never give this place a visit, and that's a shame. The burger here is as good as those at Alex's, Bobo's, Mr BBQ, and Dairi-o. The hot dogs are as good as those at Dairi-o, Mr BBQ, and Kermit's, and very close to those at PB's. The Beef Brisket is as good as any in the area, and far better than the vast majority. I highly recommend and hope you will visit.

Over five years ago, I gave Joe's a chance, only to come away unimpressed. Five years is enough…read moretime to let the disappointment fade and to give them a fresh chance, right? As the name suggests, this is still an operation focused on takeaway dining, though there are some tables available on the sidewalk outside. I'd end up taking my food home on this trip though. Once again I decided to sample the Chicago-style hot dogs offered here. And there have been improvements since my first visit. The product now comes on an actual poppy seed bun, as it should. I don't think the bun was steamed though and that hurts the texture. The hot dog itself had a good snap and taste, and the through-the-garden toppings were loaded well onto the bun. Something's still missing about the overall taste though, as these simply don't measure up to other Chicago-style hot dogs I've had -- including many far away from Chicago. The build of the sandwich looks closer to being correct than it did five years ago, but the flavors are still wrong, and I wish they'd work to figure out what it is they're missing. I placed my order on site rather than calling it in, and the young lady at the counter was pleasant. It took a little longer than I'd expected for the kitchen to prepare my order; maybe they just don't get many requests for the Windy City dog and they're just not well versed in putting it together? This latest experience leaves me scoring Joe's somewhere between two and three stars, and though the food was better than last time I still lean towards the lower side of that range. Maybe their more Carolina-themed food would be better and result in a higher rating, but there are already plenty of places I can go locally for a hot dog fixed "our way," many of which would be at a more competitive price point and with better options for drinks and seating. I wanted to try Joe's because of the hot dog options they have that aren't widely represented elsewhere in this area, and in those respects I still can't find much to love here.

Holy cow, this place should be called Sammy's chicken cuz while their sliders are good, their…read morechicken tenders are genuinely the best chicken I've had in years. So so good! Price is a little high for mini hamburgers, but if you do a meal with the tenders, totally worth it cuz their tenders are huge and freaking delicious. Their fry servings are pretty enormous too. And so many different sauces and options for different sliders. Fun modern vibes, and the service was fast and the people working here are very polite and helpful. Plus they have Cheerwine as a drink option! (I love Cheerwine, and not enough restaurants carry this awesome local soda.)

The tenders had a really solid crunch without being greasy, and the hot honey added the perfect sweet heat balance. The Meal 3 with 2 sliders and 2 tenders was probably the standout though. The Patty Melt Crunch slider and Sammy's Melt Burger both had that smashed burger flavor with crispy edges that hit perfectly. The "saucy" hot honey combo worked way better than expected, especially with the hand-cut fries and homemade ranch on the side. Even the fries stayed crispy the whole meal, which says a lot. Portion sizes were solid for the price, the food came out quick, and the whole meal had that fresh-made comfort food vibe instead of tasting overly fast-food style. Washed it all down with a Coke and honestly left full and satisfied. If you're in Winston-Salem and craving sliders, tenders, or late comfort food, Sammy's Sliders is definitely worth trying. The hot honey flavors and smash-style burgers are the move.

The food arrived in a timely manner and all tasted good with the exception of the beef patty on the burgers. The beef patty was thick and tasted like a frozen patty with filler. I prefer fresh beef on a burger, so I would not order this again. The kids cheeseburger was the same kind of patty and was not so desirable. However, the chicken parm sub was good. The other kids meal, a grilled cheese, was very good. Cheesy, buttery, and delicious. The applesauce appears to be homemade and is "chunky", which was not described on the menu. We did replace this side for fries as my kids don't like "chunky" applesauce. On a kids menu, it would be nice to have it listed as "chunky applesauce" or "homemade applesauce" as an indicator that it may not be the puree kids are familiar to. We saw other food being delivered and many plates looked very good. I would try something different next time as I think some other foods will be far better than their burger. The restaurant was clean, staff were friendly, and service was quick on a Sunday for lunch. We are excited to return and try different things next time.
