I am particular about Barbeque....really particular. I am a purest. Never, ever experiment with barbecue. Oh by the way, the only barbecue that is real barbeque is western NC barbecue. Now that I got that settled. The wifey and I went by City Barbecue in High Point just to have an adventure of having Texas style barbeque. I stayed traditional and got the brisket sandwich. I was good, cooked well, but lacked the seasoning I'm used to when having Texas style brisket. I was expecting bold flavors but they may be purest also and just wanted to highlight the quality of the brisket. They had a variety of sauces, but nothing that jumped out at me. First thing I noticed was the cute decor. Order at counter, get your own drinks and seat yourself. I was not super hungry so I just got a kids' plate with a sandwich and hush puppies. I thought the hush puppies were good. The meat on the sandwich was nice and tender but tasted extremely salty to me. I haven't seen this mentioned in other reviews so I imagine it was either a fluke or it was just my taste buds. Close to me where wanted to try it out. You order at counter. I chose pulled pork chopped BBQ sandwich, hush puppies, potato salad. Combo includes a soft drink. Total $16.57. I assumed it had slaw on the BBQ sandwich. Nope! My fault for not paying attention. Wait was average. You had couple BBQ sauces to enjoy. And other available condiments to choose. There was ample BBQ piled on the sandwich. It was lukewarm and tasted OK. Hush puppies were a little overcooked. And potato salad good. Soft drink dispenser has multiple choices. Ample tables where setup was fine. Think it gets a lot of to go orders. In all visit was OK but hoping meal would have been a notch better. Went there with my family on Sunday. They are had gift cards from me that I gave them for Christmas. The staff was great about it. The food is delicious. Especially the green beans ( my favorite side) with the baked potato. All of the meats are yummy. Love the BBQ sauce bar where you can choose your own sauce. Took a friend for her 88th birthday. Not a ton of calorie conscious choices but tried the turkey & the green beans with bacon. Then on the "don't care about calories" selections I tried the brisket & baked beans with brisket. I've had city barbecue for functions, but this was my first time ordering takeout with my own meal. I tried their Cobb salad with turkey and their ranch dressing. They package, the salad very well, and the toppings were generous. Other times I found the meats a little too smoky but the turkey had a great balance and flavor. I love the addition of pickled onions and the bacon was crisp. The ranch was thinner so it incorporated better into the salad. I had their chocolate chip cookie for dessert which was also very good. It was soft and not fancy, which is my preferred way to have chocolate chip cookies. I plan to check them out in person and try some other items on their menu. read more

Today I had the Triple Que sandwich, made from pulled pork, pulled rib meat and brisket, tossed in a delicious chipotle peach barbecue sauce with pickles and crispy onion straws. My son had a sliced turkey sandwich which he really enjoyed. We always add a few ribs because you can add them in whatever quantity you want, which is a great feature of this excellence establishment. From a side perspective, the green beans are delicious, the baked beans with brisket are heavenly and the fried okra is light and airy. This place has earned points for having the guts to open, in a place where BBQ is part of the culture and is literally a way of life.there are TONS of homegrown bbq spots within a 15-20 mile radius of this place and at least 3 with in a mile from this location. With that said, my expectations were high! I was completely let down. I went on a Tuesto capitalize on their discounted ribs by the bone. I ordered 4 bones, with sides of cornbread, collards, and mac-n-cheese. Let's start with the collards. For there to be pork in them, there was absolutely no flavor, and the texture was too chewy. The cornbread tasted very factory made. Like, I could taste preservatives and they weren't good. It was also pretty dry. The mac-n-cheese was ok. It needed a bit of salt and flavor in the noodles themselves. Finally, the ribs. They were the most disappointing ribs. While they were tender, they were burnt and all I could taste was the burnt crust. There was no escaping it. The taste was embedded into the meat. As an Eastern NC girlie that now lives in the Triad of NC, I am VERY particularly about my bbq. This was NOT it, and I will not be giving them another opportunity. Good luck, though! read more

I have a father/son lunch or dinner every once and a while and decided this time that I would like a Nashville chicken sandwich and since I wanted to give some more options to my son this place seemed to have enough choices. We drove over and it was easy to find off Jamestown Road with enough parking and a drive-thru. We parked and went in at mid-afternoon time so it was post post-lunch crowd. It was open with plenty of seating around so it could handle several people, but I am not sure about a specific group. We had several choices on the menu board and I got the Nashville chicken, greens, and slaw, while my son got a sandwich that had pulled pork and sausage plus the greens and okra. They have a variety of sauces to choose from for everyone's BBQ taste pallet. I chose what seemed to be the hottest and it was on the spicy side but not too bad. We also got a couple of bottled beers to go with the lunch. The sandwich was not too bad, the dry rub gave the Nashville spice, but it could have had more heat, and the sauce helped. The greens were pretty good, but needed a touch of vinegar and the slaw was just a bit over on the sauce making it a bit wet instead of the regional dry slaw. I knew after my first visit that I would return to try the Smoked Sausage and re-sample some sides. While it is busy early on week days, lots of take out orders and curbside pickup from local offices, but on Saturday it gets busy more toward noon and beyond - so my early visit was a quick in and out. I ordered the Smoked Sausage Sandwich, which places the sausage in a Texas toast bun ( not sure I've had that type of bun before) topped with their excellent cole slaw. This is a Texas style smoked beef sausage with natural pork casing. And the flavor and texture were excellent - I feel it is the equal of the smoked sausage served by Little Richard's, which is among the best restaurant sausage I've tasted outside of Texas! Love this place. The turkey and brisket are delicious. Just tried the pastrami and it was so good! Love the green beans and side salad. The only complaint I have is that they forget to add something on to go orders but that seems to be everywhere. The staff has always been nice and they restaurant looks great. We came here on a busy Sunday and had a nice meal. My dad was in town and he's quite the steak and potatoes type so figured this would be a good spot... and it did not disappoint. Everyone was happy with their food but the highlight was certainly the half bird! It was SO juicy! Its probably the best piece of chicken I've had all year. I personally also really liked the okra because it was lighted breaded and wasn't greasy like some fried okra. Unfortunately, by the time it made it home (5 min drive) it was barely warm. My husband also said the person who was taking out the trash grabbed his cup/lid, which really grossed him out. So, new cup at home and a quick nuke, we finally ate. We split the 2 meats, 2 sides and added a sauce and drink and it was around $25. I did like the pulled pork! It was served plain and wasn't too fatty. I didn't see my preference a vinegar bbq sauce so I tried the original (traditional sweet) and brush fire sauce (spicy) and they were just okay. We also had the brisket, which I would not recommend paying the up charge for. It was subpar and had a texture more like ham. The Hushpuppies were meh, having them reheated may have been that issue. I order the chipotle ranch to dip, but was given regular ranch, but I was very satisfied with it. The Mac and cheese was pretty good too. It was more of a white cheddar flavor and baked on top. I had driven by this place many times and had been meaning to stop. My brother had come to town so we decided to go check it out. I know it's a chain, but it really felt like A single owner restaurant. I got the barbecue chicken with fries, and my brother also got chicken but he got ribs to split with us. The food came out in a very timely manner and was really good. I thought the ribs had a really nice smoke ring and a really nice flavor and were not overcooked. When they fall off the bone that indicates they're overcooked and these were not. These were cooked perfectly. Nice spot for a quick lunch! A light and clean, no frills, order at the counter joint. On Tuesdays they have $1.79 / rib special, so I ordered 3 of those and the bone-in breast/wing combo with corn pudding. My coworkers got the same as well. Food came out fast, about 5 mins. They did short me a rib but I figured that's probably because my coworkers ordered before me and both only got 2, and the staff was quick to add the extra rib to my plate. They have a good selection of sauces (original, brushfire, sweet wine etc). We all enjoyed our food- I would say it's a bit pricy for lunch (sides are a La carte)- but I at least have leftovers for later. I tried the fried okra too, it was pretty tasty. read more

I went thru the Drive Thru to get a pulled pork combo with two sides, baked beans and green beans it says on my receipt baked beans and green beans. My receipt ticket is T1106. I am a nurse put in my hours today and then worked out some and I get home to get comfortable to eat my meal and it's not what I ordered. what I got is green beans and collard greens and I don't play with my collard greens. That's why I only eat my own. This is so disappointing and it takes me about 10 -15 minutes to come back over there through traffic and 10 - 15 minutes to get back and I have to be to work in the morning, so this is so disappointing that you order food and your receipt says what you order and you sit down to eat after getting comfortable and it's not what you ordered I just realized I asked for a cream soda and I got a root beer. My first visit to City didn't shake out so well. Their signature sandwich (the More Cowbell) was an utter disappointment, and there were some customer service issues also. But it was early in the restaurant's life, and today I chose to give the place another chance. This time the restaurant's crew was far better prepared. Staff were prompt, friendly, and accurate in their work -- a significant improvement from last time. I showed up hungry, so rather than a sandwich I went with the Pick Two platter, adding on a cup of mac & cheese. For the smoked selections I went with brisket and sausage. That sausage link was admittedly pretty delicious, with a nice snap to the semi-charred skin. And I'd get the macaroni again. As for the brisket, well, maybe I've just been spoiled by my visits to Texas. Most of the meat didn't look bad, but I couldn't find much there in terms of taste (even less than last time) aside from a smokiness that seemed artificial -- think liquid smoke flavoring. One piece of the brisket was a bit leathery, and who wants to eat suede? And those findings keep me from bumping my rating up to four stars. read more

So I've only done drive through for their cobbler. I cannot say anything else. The staff is amazingly courteous. The cobbler, that cobbler!!! Amazing. It was recommended by a coworker and let me tell you, our supervisor went and we are about to try and get them for a work event. The cobbler had me sit down and moan at how amazing it tasted. Now I've lived in Texas, so when I tell you I know some cobbler. The depth of flavor in the cobbler is so good. The vanilla and then the subtle notes of cinnamon. It is perfectly balanced and the crust is not hard, it's hearty enough and thick, but everything is so dang moist. My whole family fell in love and we wanted to go back to get more. I was dock with the flu and drove back to go get more because it is worth it. My manager said it is the closest thing to his mom's cobbler that he's had. Go get some!!! read more

The food was actually really good. The wings were so crispy and seasoned really well. Highly recommend the Nashville hot sandwich! The reason for my 3 star review is because we came at opening at the bathrooms were pretty dirty from yesterday and not stocked. I asked if they had senior drinks they actually gave me 10% off my total bill, which was a pleasant surprise. The sandwich was huge and the pork very tasty. My beans had small cubes of brisket in it and the macaroni came with a three cheese blend. For what I ordered I don't feel the wait time was too long. Took me a little while to figure this place out. The first two visits were disappointing. I got the sampler both times. First time had brisket and pulled pork, second time got brisket and sausage. Good brisket is hard to find in NC and this place is no exception. They seem to be out of their depth on that. Granted, brisket is tricky and once you start slicing it, even if you do everything right it will dry out if you're not moving it fast enough. That being said, this crew has no idea how to slice it. First time, it came in these huge half-inch thick slices so it was too tough and dry. Second time they first gave it to me all chopped up like pulled pork. I really didn't think it was brisket at all. I sent it back and asked them to slice it properly. They returned with it sliced along the grain instead of against it. So now I had long, tough, stringy brisket. My advice, don't bother with the brisket. They don't know what they're doing with it. The pulled pork was nothing special, but was fine. Seemed like it should have taken in more smoke. The sausage tasted like hit hadn't seen the inside of the smoker at all. However, in fairness to them, sausage isn't really my thing. So maybe they're doing it right. The third time I visited, I tried the ribs. They were awesome. Full, smokey flavor, just the right amount of sauce, not too sticky, and they got it out of the smoker just before it started falling apart. In short, ribs are what these guys understand.
