This tiny place is huge when it comes to flavor. The yummy ribs fall right off the bone. The mixed greens were outstanding, especially with fresh cornbread crumbled on top. And finally, the Lima beans were just perfect!!! Best soul food??? Yes, yes, yes! read more

Bully's Restaurant - Barbeque Near Me - Jackson, Mississippi

Ta da! Take out order! Let's be real for a second and have a serious conversation about Southern food. For many years I knew nothing about Southern or Soul food and certainly not enough to write a review or comment on it. The truth is that I probably still don't. What I do know, however, is incredible food and Bully's is it. I would go here weekly if my waistline could handle it. Here's what I had: Southern Fried Catfish plate - extra catfish. Vegetable Plate. On order: Catfish + more catfish Collards Cornbread Mac and Cheese Vegetable Plate: Fried Green Tomatoes Sweet Potatoes Cream Potatoes More Collards When I say that every single thing on the order was amazing, I'm not lying. Food was hot. The catfish was fried beautifully - best I've had, ever and still steaming. The vegetables were flavorful, fresh, plump, juicy, delicious and my mouth is watering even thinking about it. The cornbread was moist, a hint of corn sweetness. Bonus points: Not a THING was greasy. This means it was cooked perfectly. Normally I would complain about the lack of homemade tartar and cocktail sauce but here it doesn't even matter. Just take what they give you and be happy. You will be very, very happy. There is a reason this place is legendary. read more

This restaurant is everything. The service. The food. The sweet tea. It was fabulous! I had the beef tips and rice with field peas and turnip/mustard mix with cornbread. Definitely grab a plate or two if you're in the area. I'll be back. read more

I've been coming to Bully's since I was a young girl. My mom and cousin use to be the head cooks here. The food has always and will continue to be amazing! Anything you get, you can't go wrong with! read more

" Fried catfish as light as a cloud" Perfectly prepared and seasoned. And the sides!! Field peas, Mac and Cheese Fried Okra all just insane. Wonderful Southern hospitality from Mr Tyrone and staff. A really special dining experience and not to be missed. The parking is a nightmare. But so what. Time your visit and go and enjoy one of Americas Real culinary treasures. .... 9/15/17 Another insane Friday lunch at Bullys! The food is so good and the kind and warm service from all the servers and staff is so wonderful. You just sit down, order and BOOM here comes Joy. And if need refills on Ice Tea and ( I drink a ton ) NO Problem. It's a place that sets a really high standard that other dining establishments should try to emulate. The only negative is getting there on the Pot Hole filled Jackson, Mississippi streets. So what's a hubcap or two when you can experience such quality? Can't wait to return next trip to Crossroads of the Metropolitan South!!!! read more

I love the Homemade style food! The ribs were delish and I had the "uptown" drink. The area looks a little sketchy but it's the most feel at home sole food place read more

Baffled that I paid $18 for TWO oxtails, yams, dressing, rice, sweet tea, and a credit card fee! The customer service was great but the value of food for the price isn't worth it when there are so many other better options in the area. read more

Unparalleled soul food awesomeness. We came to Bully's in search of some of Mississippi's best soul food. We had originally intended to head over to two sisters, but thank goodness they were closed as we would have missed out on the experience of dining here. Bully's isn't glitz and glam, it's heart, it's family. The food is served on plastic trays that you'll remember from cafeteria days, but the food served in those individual sections is leaps and bounds above anything from your child hood. Fried Chicken, Ribs, Liver and Onions, Fried Pork Chops, the list goes on and on. Everything is cooked slowly, with love, just like your family used to make it. The real all stars at Bully's are the sides though. The collards are perfect, the okra and tomatoes is mind-blowing, even the mac n' cheese is top notch. In all truth, at bully's you'd be hard pressed to find anything on the Menu you don't enjoy. Family owned and run, one of the highlights of eating here is watching each person walk in, say hello to everyone in the dining room, and walking back to say hello to the kitchen as well before they even sit down. A true diamond in the rough, Bully's offers a love of people and food without conditions uncommon in most restaurants. read more

I resolved to my road trip companion that we were going to have a solid soul food experience if that meant exploring the bowels of every last city in Mississippi, and this place immediately popped up on Google. It is almost literally a hole in the wall-- off the beaten path, and not the kind of place you're going to get a $12 organic vodka cocktail (thank god some of these places still exist-- coming from Chicago). Staff were awesome and fun. We had the beef short ribs, fried catfish, okra, yams, two kinds of collards, and cornbread. The spicy collards were better than the mustard greens, but I'd have to say that the collards were the best I have ever had. I was a bit bummed that we didn't get pork ribs, but perhaps next time-- the meat on the ribs was quite literally falling off the bone and covered in barbecue sauce. They were also out of fried green tomatoes-- next time. :) Before tip with one (large) drink, our tab came to $17 and left, fully sated, happy, and encouraged by the belief in a better culinary tomorrow! read more

If you're looking for an authentic Mississippi food experience, look no further. Bully's is everything you want and everything you need. This is soul food at its very best. The food is just phenomenal. I mean, it is indulgent, nap-inducing, calorie-tastic, home-cooked, lick-the-plate kind of good food. Get the fried chicken or the fried catfish. That's where it's at. The sides-- everything from mac and cheese to greens to sweet potatoes-- are perfect. Everything's cooked with the perfect amount of grease and seasonings. You'll want to ask the kitchen staff if they're looking to adopt any full-grown adult children because you've never had home-cooked food this good. The staff is SO nice. They're friendly, helpful, and funny. Everyone wants you to feel at home here, and it shows. This place is down home goodness. The atmosphere isn't anything fancy, so don't come in expecting white tablecloths and candles. But this place has character, and that's more important. Parking is limited and the restaurant itself is quite small, so come with a small group of friends and make plans to carpool. This is the perfect place to grab a quality lunch with a couple pals. If you're visiting Jackson, or if you have friends visiting, or if you just need a real Southern kind of meal, go to Bully's. Like, right now. Just one last thing: plan ahead because you WILL need a nap after eating here. But you won't regret it! read more

The south is indeed one of the best regions for good homestyle, soul food. Bully's is no different and will probably be one of the best places I have eaten. The service is impeccable! From the time we walked in the people spoke and escorted us to our seats. We order the "uptown" which is the sweet tea/lemonade mix and it was amazing. Everyone at our table ordered something different so that we could text a wide variety. Fried Chicken, smothered pork chops, greens, fried corn, pig feet, cornbread, dressing, and cabbage. Collectively, our meals were superb! Food came out super fast (probably prepared early) and multiple people made sure we were all ok. GET HERE NOW! read more

Never a bad meal at Bully's. Mr. Bully's is always there in the kitchen cooking and often comes out to say hi to everyone. The staff is attentive, sweet and some of the ladies are hilarious. I always feel welcomed everytime we come. Overall 5 stars, we always tip 50% of our bill because they're always so great read more

This place is incredible!! I haven't eaten food like that since my grandmother passed. This is the kind of place Yelp was made for. Without Yelp you would never find this place, and if you found it you wouldn't go in. But based on the reviews you just might give it a chance, and you will be so happy!! We had fried chicken, catfish, fried green tomatoes, fried corn, cabbage, cornbread, and it was all delicious beyond words. The best: smothered oxtails. My son wanted to try something different. Everyone tasted them, oh! My! Goodness!! The servers, cooks , and young man at cash register were so personable. When word got around that we were from Texas several workers came by to visit with us. What an experience! read more

The other reviews have summed it up nicely I see, but I'll just chime in to confirm: this is phenomenal soul food. Everything I have had here is well prepared, fresh ingredients and satisfying to the soul. You can tell that the veggies are fresh, not frozen or canned (for the most part, at least). The food is amazing. You can't go wrong with a thing on the menu. read more

Good food. I had no idea what to get. So I put my trust in the staff to treat me to whatever they felt was the most authentic dish that regulars crave. They set me up with the beef tips and rice with a side of sweet potato yams and collard greens. I'm not sure I'll ever be in Mississippi ever again, but if I do, I'll definitely come back for another home cooked meal from these fine people. read more

I found reviews of this restaurant on various sites and decided to try it with my nine year old. Boy am I glad we did! He had the bbq with fries and I had the beef tips with mixed greens. The sweet tea was delicious too! The staff couldn't be happier to help you with anything you need. The parking is a bit tight, so be prepared. The roads leading up there are laden with pot holes too. Don't go expecting the ambiance or decoration of a typical 5 star restaurant, because it is anything but! The service and food are much better! This is like mama's kitchen. It will be well worth the drive from the main road! read more

I have been waiting forever to go here especially since it was on Bizarre Foods! I wasn't impressed with the oxtails or ribs. My meats were not hot when they came out the kitchen. The butter beans were not seasoned. The greens had sugar in them. Did I say my food was not hot? The fried green tomatoes were mushy. The plus is the staff was really nice and friendly. read more

My husband and I were road tripping from Houston to Nashville and were looking for a lunch place in Mississippi so we, of course, turned to Yelp. This place had stellar reviews so we obviously had to check it out. Bully's is the definition of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. We would never had thought to stop here if it weren't for Yelp. We arrived around lunch time and had to sort of double-park, which other cars were doing as well. Otherwise, there's only like 5 or 6 spaces in front. There is minimal seating so best to come with only a few friends. The menu is straight forward--choose a meat and sides. I had the fried chicken, mac and cheese, and greens. The greens were amazing. The chicken was quite good and the mac and cheese wasn't memorable (should have written this review sooner I guess). Be sure to use the bathroom before eating here because it was in pretty bad condition. Like I said, hole-in-the-wall. Go in knowing what to expect as far as ambiance and cleanliness and you'll enjoy yourself. Overall, good soul food, friendly service, give it a shot. read more

My family was visiting Jackson for the weekend and decided we wanted to support a local business. This restaurant was highly rated on multiple sites so we decided to give it a try. When we arrived, I was a bit surprised by the outside but we were being adventurous. I felt like I stepped back in time and was at a family reunion. When we opened the door, we were warmly greeted by the staff. The dining room is very small in size but big in atmosphere. Our waittress was extremely friendly and full of southern hospitality. We had fish, ribs, greens, potatoe salad, mac and cheese, candied yams, cobbler and sweet potatoe pie. The food was incredible. All of the staff members that we encountered were friendly and courteous. Do not let the appearance keep you from missing this outstanding restaurant. I felt like I had discovered a hidden gem. I was surprised to learn that the restaurant has been featured in several magazines, Travel Channel and has won a James Beard award. This is a must for any foodie that loves southern cuisine. read more

Best soul food restaurant on this side town. This place has a great family environment. I went recently with my family for a little gathering and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our sever was very knowledgeable and patient with our group. The only reason I gave four stars instead of five is because you have to wait in the front to check out AND the place needs to be updated. read more

I love a good hole in the wall restaurant, and I just found one of my new favorites. I've had friends for years that came here, and finally made it myself. The vegetables/sides are AMAZING, and the pork ribs I got were perfect. Kind of more like rib tips, and heavy on the sauce. Perfectly cooked. But aside from the food being great, the people are what makes this place special. The owner "Mr. Bully" I presume, Mrs. Greta, and Mrs. Jackie that waited on me were so thankful that I came for a visit, and were all eager to find out where I was from and how I heard of this place. Travel Channel's Food Paradise is responsible, and ill be back at least once a week or every other week. read more

So legit. You know it's the real deal when you have to wait to get into the parking lot. If you want authentic southern soul food, this is the place to go. Just don't plan on doing anything important immediately afterwards. My group ordered pork chops, turkey necks, ham hock, and fried chicken. We all ended up eating each other's food. Everything was absolutely stellar. Meats were all cooked to order, and loaded with flavor. Make sure to get everything smothered in gravy. Best gravy I've ever had, and I'm a man who enjoys his gravy. Sides were outstanding as well and there were a good amount of options. The locals all seem to know about this place. If you're in town visiting, a stop at Bully's is an absolutely must! Nom nom nom read more

A hidden gem in Jackson and I'm not even a huge soul food fan. It's on my list of regular eateries.

TRUEEEE Soulfood. When I go in here I feel like I am going into a time machine. The people are so friendly and helpful and everything tastes like it is fresh out of my grandmother's stove. It's really as simple as that, if you like soul food or want to try authentic soul food go here. It seems as if the recipes have been passed down for generations. Eat In to get the full experience. read more

Every time I come home to visit my family I ask that we stop here right after I get off the plane. Once I flew into the Memphis airport to meet my parents for an Ole Miss game and my father had brought me two orders of mac and cheese in a Sam's hot/cold bag. Needless to say I am a fan of their mac and cheese. I also cannot go with out their cornbread dressing. In fact my family orders a tray of it for Thanksgiving each year. It is really the best I have ever had. Really everything is great. I usually just order a vegetable plate. The food comes out on the exact same type of red trays they had at my high school. If you are ever in Jackson you have to make a trip over to Bully's. read more

Driving through Mississippi and I saw the reviews for this place. We had to try it! I will say that the razor wire on the sides of the parking lot makes it a little intimidating. The food did not disappoint, but the fact that they were out of ribs at 1:30 was sad. Super good authentic soul food. The staff was very friendly. We did have three different people from the kitchen come out and talk to us. I wasn't sure if it was because we were the only white people or because we are from Minnesota and they thought we sounded funny? I am taking one star off because the place is not clean! All the walls could use some paint or maybe just a good scrub. Off the beaten path, but worth the trip for an authentic soul food meal. read more

Stopped her with my Grandaughter who was craving some sole food. The food and service was excellent. True Southern hospitality... everyone was friendly and engaging, including the other patrons. We tried catfish, beef tips, fried corn (it's like creamed corn, except the corn is a bit more crisp), greens, mac & cheese, cornbread, lemonade, and banana pudding. Both main dishes were perfectly seasoned and cooked, and I also loved the corn and greens. The macaroni was tasty but a little too mushy. Cornbread was not flavorful enough for me to enjoy it much on its own, however it went well with the food. Lemonade was not sour enough for me, but it's probably just right for people who enjoy sweet drinks. Banana pudding was awesome! Prices are very reasonable. Bring cash if you want to avoid the $1 processing fee for debit/credit card transactions. read more
