They had only been open for 1/2 hr. and were already busy. The lady greeted us at the door and was very nice, like a grandma. Very welcoming! We ordered to go and the guy who took our order with very nice and quick. He kept us updated on our order. Didn't wait long. They don't take credit cards so bring cash. I ordered the fried chicken dinner; the chicken perfectly cooked. The yams tasted like my yams so I was surprisingly pleased. That meal was delicious. My husband ordered the 1/2 lb burger; he said it was cooked perfect. He enjoyed his meal. We got this food to eat on the road while we drove home and it did not disappoint. It was a wonderful close to our trip. I'm glad I discovered this place in a Durham tourist guide the night before we were leaving. Thought the food looked good in the picture and decided that's where we'd get our final meal of the trip. Also it was about 3-4 mins from hotel right behind Sheetz. So I had their barbeque, hushpuppies, slaw, and fried chicken. It was good. The fried chicken was seasoned so well. It was my favorite. The barbeque was good for vinegar based barbeque so it's worth a try. Everything was good and I do recommend this place to others. read more

Basic BBQ joint that tries to be less seedy than most and succeeds. The pulled pork is pretty good. If you don't want bland BBQ, ask wait staff which one is a little spicy... I can't remember. Oh, Bullocks, your stew back in the 80's and 90's was to die for. It was it's own food group. I had to move to the west coast for a year or two, and when I returned to my Durham home - mainly because I was dying for lack of real southern food - I was so disappointed. You changed your stew recipe. What was once a perfectly balanced meaty-vegetable-laden bowl of perfection is now an overly sweet, too-chunky bowl of Blah. A Durham friend recommended this place to me when I was traveling through the area on business. LOVED it! The BBQ beans were out of this world good; the cole slaw and BBQ also very good. The hush puppies were fabulous and not greasy at all! I was amazed at how extensive the menu was - everything from chili cheeseburgers to shrimp & scallops. Our waitress was great, the bathroom was spotless, and there was an ATM in the lobby (they don't take credit cards.) I'll be back! read more

I understand why Bullock's gets so many bad reviews; it can be hit-or-miss. We went on a Sat. night, waited in line for quite a while, and ordered my husband's and my usual platters. We were served 2 minuscule pieces of cold, dry, fried chicken thighs, overly thick Brunswick stew that had been sitting on the stove for way too long, ok BBQ, slaw, and oddly hard but fresh hushpuppies. Did they stop preparing fresh food because it was late (around 7 pm) on a Sat. and they are closed on Sun.? Regardless, there is no excuse for serving cold, inedible leftover chicken to 4 people in our party. They should have told us that they were out of dark meat or they should have cooked a fresh batch. read more

I was born and raised in Durham. Bullock's has always been the "go to" place about once a week and when out of state relatives visited. I am not sure what has changed with the food, but something has definitely changed for the worse. My aunt was down from Va Bch and we purchased take out of sliced BBQ, slaw, stew and fried chicken. The BBQ had no taste. The stew was watery and not very good. The fried chicken was so dry that by dogs would not eat it. I would like to say that this is the first time this has happened to me at Bullock's. The last time my sister and I ate there, we had to send our food back. The prices have increased and the taste has decreased. I am not sure what has happened to my once favorite restaurant but I sure wish they would change things back. I've never had such greasy food from Bullocks's BBQ; even soul food cooking I've experienced wasn't this greasy! The okra just looked soggy. I thought at first it was from the steam as we got take out. It actually had around a 1/4 inch of grease lying in the bottom of the tray. The fish wasn't drained off as well like usual. The only thing good was the hush puppies and stew! A few months ago the stew wasn't as good. It tasted old! I'm sad to say Bullock's seems to be going down hill once again as years ago the vegetables weren't as good. As a native of Durham it's sad to say I wouldn't suggest Bullock's BBQ to anyone. This restaurant is perfect for Grams. Upon entry, it was clear that her crowd hangs out and works here. Mid day on a Tuesday, about 5 min from Duke campus, it appears this is where the locals go to escape students, but to still experience a flurry of activity. I discovered another benefit when my pork, Brunswick stew, and fries arrived: the food comes pre-chewed! After eating the stew with a fork, and adding a healthy dose of katsup to the pork, a flavor enhancer to be sure, I settled into the fries to forget the images of baby birds eating at their mothers' mouths. Although the hush puppies were shaped like something one sees in the toilet after a particularly hard time, I pretended those were the meal I paid for instead of what I actually paid for so I could justify the existence of my meal. The country music playing on the way in sums up this place well: present on the outside (the building is quite cool looking) but lacking on the inside. read more

this place defines family & southern food. it is a durham landmark, with many locals, students, & celebs eating here & later having bbq shipped all over the world. the food is good, the chopped bbq that is homemade is a little too spicy for me, but perfect if mixed with the stew. the hush puppies are awesome with your choice of butter or honey butter, the pork chop sandwiches & fish sandwiches are to die for, and i normally will not eat fish except sushi. very extensive menu, lots to pick from. the yams are always perfect. some times things are a little too sweet, but that is to be expected with true southern food... the desserts are awesome. another food i normally wont eat is banana pudding. i have to get it every time i go here. they will work with you on food (altering it) if it is possible. almost all of the food is homemade, if i remember correctly, including the bbq & stew. not everything is perfect & consistent, but near it each time. the staff is personable & friendly, the atmosphere is very casual & child friendly. they treat everyone wonderfully, and if you are a familiar face, you are treated almost like family! the cash/check only is a bit old fashion, but there is an atm in the lobby. honest, I've eaten here all of my life, and have worked here. This place is locally-owned and has been in business for decades. It is southern food at average prices. The meal we had was good and the portions were more than we needed, but the reason for the low rating is to make others aware of their current payment policy. I do not live in Durham and only visit this restaurant for business when in town. When we last went there a couple of months ago, they would accept credit cards. However, on this visit, the cashier indicated that they don't take any electronic form of payment pointing to a small sign behind the counter mounted to the wall that you will not see when entering. There is nothing on the doors indicating Cash Only. Instead of paying for the Lunch, for several people, on a company Visa, I had to pay out of pocket, cash. I try to support local businesses if the food is acceptable and my current work will bring me, and others, to Durham for at least the next five (5) years. I will make other choices as Bullocks is no longer friendly to business. read more

Do not ever use them for special events. They completely blew off delivering food for my wedding. We called when they were late and someone told us the driver was lost. We called back again (food is almost an hour late at this point) and they said no one was coming and it was pick up. AFTER we had just spoken to them to give driver directions. Not only did we have to leave to go get the food for our guests but the food was cold and the hush-puppies were bricks. They didn't give us any kind of refund or discount, but worse than anything I can't believe they wouldn't even give us fresh hush-puppies after they screwed up. $450 wasted and my guests had to wait over an hour for food. The owner was so rude and hateful to us. We had him on speaker phone in the reception hall and everyone was shocked at the way he spoke to us about HIS own mistake. I have always loved this place but I finally saw their true colors. Our entire family was so hurt and disgusted by they way they spoke to us on our wedding day, that none of us have been back since. read more
