I've been here twice. Ashiastu is a great step up for when a deep tissue massage just isn't enough for me.

Like many people in 2020, finding a place to work out safely has been very difficult. I had no idea…read morewhat to do as an extrovert who loves Group Fitness classes, because it helps me get a little bit more energy. That's where my summer Y membership came into place. I ended up utilizing the outdoor spin classes at this location frequently, and cannot say enough good things about Chuck, the fitness instructor. As far as I know, there are a few other outdoor classes, but the spin classes are my jam. I love Chuck's energy, the music, and the fact that I get a super hard ride in once a week. I believe he teaches three classes per week, but the Sunday class is my favorite. So grateful that the YMCA has provided us with a safe way to get our fitness on. Thank you!

By far my favorite YMCA in Durham. While the American Tobacco Campus lacks a swimming pool, steam…read moreroom and sauna, it makes up for it in the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff, cleanliness of the lockers and equipment and it's the least crowded Y I've been to in the area. I most often visit the gym between 9:30-12:00pm, and there is never more then a handful of clients during those hours at this Y. Mostly professionals that work at Tobacco Campus, people are quiet and stick to themselves. Also, note that this location is also only open on weekdays, conducive to professionals! I've never had a Y attendant be more attentive to me, one of the staff asked me if I was doing okay during my workout routine and offered helpful suggestions. Their quality of equipment is on par with the Lakewood facilities but is more updated with the NikeFit application on the treadmills and built in fans (you also have a beautiful waterfall view!). They also have a private bike room (not a glass room like the downtown Y) and a couple private workout classrooms for classes. My only qualms about this Y are that parking can be rough to find and there's a two hour limit on the street and in the deck. In addition, the water pressure in the woman's bathroom is like a deep-tissue massage. It's not bad, but startled me at first and I could see people having an issue with that. Since this location is only open during weekdays and not late, it's definitely more geared towards the local work crowd. Last, the lockers in the woman's room are much smaller then your typical YMCA lockers, so bring a small gym back or just try to shove it all in. I switch off my YMCA's since I work, live and socialize near three different locations, but I was very happy to discover this mostly hidden branch. Be sure to check it out if you're looking for a quiet atmosphere and a place where there will always be open equipment. Also, they've got coffee for you on your way out, how much better can it get?! Elite Note: If you feel like running outdoors, the ATT starts on the other side of the highway and goes for 22 miles!

In August 2010, I showed up like train-wreck about to happen, in terms of my medical and physical…read moreproblems, and the Duke Fitness Center helped me reverse the course and get back on the road to better health. I cannot say enough good things about the program as its immersion process is totally focused on the client with critical and caring attention. While the DFC has some club members from the local area, the body of its service is to an ever changing group of clients who have traveled from all over the USA and the world in search of its cutting edge services. I likened the overall world of the facility to camp-meets-college where the clients themselves are the homework. Safe and secure from outside pressures, the spacious facility has all of the equipment one needs to work on their issues. One might think from the price tag for the 4 week program that they were going to Beverly Hills for a shopping spree, but the facility is just the opposite of fancy health clubs and spas. That's the pure pleasure of going there as attitudes and velvet-rope expectations are dispensed with: everyone is there with some issue of their own creation. In a blend of medically-supervised exercise with thought provoking classes lead by first rate teachers and physicians, the DFC glows with results as long as its programs are embraced. For my part, I dropped 25+ lbs in 5 weeks, beat having diabetes, dropped a spectacular 300+ pts in blood fat, learned how to cook & eat in a more healthy way, and learned more about myself than I could have anywhere else. In addition, I made a lot of good friends in the process. Yes, the program may be expensive, but my health is worth far more and I appreciate it more now than I ever did in 40+ years.

I'm currently coming here for shoulder PT. I'm super impressed with my therapist, but not so much…read morewith the other staff. They haven't been the nicest or easiest to work with. The staff here really and truly cares. As you get checked in, you'll probably will be greeted by Maggie. You'll know her, by he model-esqe eyebrows, and her, "I can solve your issue, look!" She is very sweet and really can fix just about anything with your membership, or questions. The have personal trainers available that are pretty reasonable ... $45 for half-hour. Thats' cheap. I have Mckinze. She's great. I'm 'silver' and there to gain strength and lose weight. I"ve already dropped 8 lbs, not even trying. They serve the most delicious protein shakes I've ever had. They are 20 oz and have a full array of good stuff. I treat myself once a week. They serve about 10 different flavors. ** place is spotless. And it's traffic flow works; I am sure the owners gave a lot of thought to this. What I really like at Fitness World is the amazing diversity of classes they offer ... for FREE! (most of them). There is something for everyone. I like the strength and balance classes. Another feature, which sold me, is there is a dry sauna in the men's shower area. I LOVE THIS !! Feels so good to sweat out all those toxins. I can't say enough good things about this gym. Durham is fortunate to have it. And, the owners are there everyday, so they are involved unlike P.F. I met the wife of the owner, Robin. She is vivacious, sparking personality and will help you with questions, but if there's a real problem - - go see Maggie ...lol. The only down side, is that parking can be an issue during peak times. But hey, you're there to exercise, walk an extra parking space. Try it - you'll like it !

This gym used to be way better maintained under the previous owner. When Fitness World took over…read morethe operation they at first made noteworthy investments in the equipment and I was impressed. Since then, they have continued to allow equipment facilities to deteriorate. And my rating is only about the equipment upkeep and maintenance and NOT about the quality staff that they continue to have working there. I've uploaded several images (none are dupes) that I took today to illustrate my point. the broken or missing machines have been in the state for several months so it's not like it just pooped up this week. I enjoy going to the gym but no one I speak to seems to know when anything will be fixed. They are just told "we're working on it"
