This gym used to be way better maintained under the previous owner. When Fitness World took over the operation they at first made noteworthy investments in the equipment and I was impressed. Since then, they have continued to allow equipment facilities to deteriorate. And my rating is only about the equipment upkeep and maintenance and NOT about the quality staff that they continue to have working there. I've uploaded several images (none are dupes) that I took today to illustrate my point. the broken or missing machines have been in the state for several months so it's not like it just pooped up this week. I enjoy going to the gym but no one I speak to seems to know when anything will be fixed. They are just told "we're working on it" read more

It got updated to a brand new version and the new name is "Fuel Fitness." All blue now!!!!!!!!!!! Its probably look bigger than before.

I was a member at Fitness World for over two years. I brought at least 10 friends to the gym who also became members. In January of 2020 after having a baby, I thought I froze my membership and was told it would remain frozen until I was ready to return. I was never given instructions on how to officially terminate my membership so instead of emailing me an invoice or receipt of auto bank draft, they kept drafting. I just now realized this was happening. I had heard of this happening with other members who have moved out of the area and still been charged. It doesn't seem right that the gym had a record that I haven't stepped foot in the gym since January 2020 and yet I was charged and not be notified. I'm out a lot of money as a result. I'm very disappointed and feel betrayed as a once loyal and happy customer. It's under new management so perhaps they will be better with customer service but this seems ridiculous. read more

Lots of space, low pressure and clean equipment. I was only in the area for a week but enjoyed the gym. The staff was friendly and very professional. The equipment was uclean and all functioning properly. My only complaint was parking. The area the gym is located in has an odd parking lot that is not very easy to find. I spent time looking but it's not a big deal unless your in a time Crunch. read more

I was concerned about the 1 year commitment when I signed up, because I wasn't sure if I'd be in the vicinity indefinitely. I was assured that they'd work with me & it would be easy to get out of if I needed. Now I'm 7 months in, and they're not letting me out of the commitment, so I'm out hundreds of dollars on a club I can't use. Something to keep in mind when signing up... read more

The gym enforces a dress code, essentially only for women. I have been approached multiple times due to my clothing. One time my tank top was "too short" and showed a little bit of my back. The thing is, I was wearing high-rise leggings so it could've shown a sliver of mid-torso only if I bent down to pick stuff up or stretched and my shirt lifted (as normal clothes do). I was confronted by a male employee and was uncomfortable that he had been watching me. Besides, if you look around, many of the men wear stringers and other tank tops which show way more than I ever have but I have never seen them be confronted about it. I wear tank tops because it doesn't restrict my movement and make me overheat but it seems like the only clothing item they wouldn't complain about a female wearing is probably a baggy sweatshirt. Every gym I've ever been to has NEVER had a dress code or rules about clothing at all. If I wanted to be told what to wear I would go back to middle school. Don't waste your money here.. read more

My girlfriend and I joined last November when they offered some pretty reasonable plans. So it's been a few months - and I can say, they're a stairmaster above the rest! The staff here really and truly cares. As you get checked in, you'll probably will be greeted by Maggie. You'll know her, by he model-esqe eyebrows, and her, "I can solve your issue, look!" She is very sweet and really can fix just about anything with your membership, or questions. The have personal trainers available that are pretty reasonable ... $45 for half-hour. Thats' cheap. I have Mckinze. She's great. I'm 'silver' and there to gain strength and lose weight. I"ve already dropped 8 lbs, not even trying. They serve the most delicious protein shakes I've ever had. They are 20 oz and have a full array of good stuff. I treat myself once a week. They serve about 10 different flavors. ** place is spotless. And it's traffic flow works; I am sure the owners gave a lot of thought to this. What I really like at Fitness World is the amazing diversity of classes they offer ... for FREE! (most of them). There is something for everyone. I like the strength and balance classes. Another feature, which sold me, is there is a dry sauna in the men's shower area. I LOVE THIS !! Feels so good to sweat out all those toxins. I can't say enough good things about this gym. Durham is fortunate to have it. And, the owners are there everyday, so they are involved unlike P.F. I met the wife of the owner, Robin. She is vivacious, sparking personality and will help you with questions, but if there's a real problem - - go see Maggie ...lol. The only down side, is that parking can be an issue during peak times. But hey, you're there to exercise, walk an extra parking space. Try it - you'll like it ! read more

Gym itself is not bad. But the workers are not very considerate in requiring people to wear masks or keep social distancing during the workout. Plus part area of the gym is very crowded because they gathered all the barbells, dumbbells, and a few other equipment together over there. And the director is reluctant to rearrange those equipment. So people are crowded over there. Not a good practice at this time read more

There are a number of members here who like to inhibit others from using the equipment. They even verbally say "I was about to use that" or "I'm still using that" because they are busy talking to someone. I'm surprised that the staff allows this since it's a clear violation of their rules. They are now enforcing the mask rule, even to those who are lifting, which I think is extremely dangerous. Maybe they'll rethink it when they get sued for liability when someone passes out and drops a bar on their chest. They say the rule is because some of the members don't feel safe but if you walk in to this gym, you will see that they have nearly every TV tuned into fake-ass CNN news. This was my gym for several years. It has gone downhill in my opinion. I'm glad to move on. read more

Due to the numerous issues being a member of the Duke gym entails, I've made an effort of doing trials at nearly every gym in the Durham area. I do a lot of running, and have a fairly set routine I like to do in the gym, so I was looking for specific equipment, waits that weren't too long for equipment, and a friendly environment. This spot far and away surpassed the competition, and I happily signed up for a year subscription just recently. They offer a wide range of high intensity training/exercise, various classes, childcare, etc. They also have offered free fitness and nutrition consults for me as a new member, another fun perk that I'll have to take advantage of. Definitely worth giving a shot for their free trial - doubt you won't be impressed! read more

This has been the best gym I've ever gone too. I love that it's not too big, but big enough at the same time. I am usually a morning workout kind of girl. I would recommend you don't go between 5-7PM because it's pretty packed. But outside of that it's manageable. I love that there are both steam rooms and saunas in each of the locker rooms. read more

It's been nearly two years since my last review, and I say it is well past due for an update! Since I last wrote, I have become a dedicated spinner, as necessitated by chronic plantar fasciitis in my heel, brought on by those 25-30 miles I was running a week back then. For two years I've been spinning four times a week: usually twice with Cristina (Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. and Thursdays at 6:45 p.m.) and twice with Stephen (Saturdays at 9:45 a.m. and Sundays [1.5 hrs] at 10:15 a.m.). And while I've obviously got my two favorites, I've also taken classes from basically every single spin instructor there, and I'll fill you in on some of those classes as well. Cristina is a lovely and amazing Doctor of Medicine at Duke, who teaches spin twice a week at FW when she's not busy saving lives and winning races (she's also an amazing cyclist IRL!). She is one of the kindest, most compassionate people I know, and the positive energy she brings to her classes leave you with a feeling akin to a yoga bliss buzz, except as a bonus you've also got that intense calorie burn. She'll shake your hand on your first visit---and again on many subsequent visits!---and she'll remember your name next time you come. Cristina has an uncanny ability to make everyone feel welcome and to keep us all motivated during the ride, by playing great music, encouraging class participation (sometimes we take turns counting jumps and / or devising our own workout for the class, where we get to play teacher for a minute), and yelling out affirmations in her fabulous Italian accent: "YOU ARE STRONGER THAN YOU THINK!" / "YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL TONIGHT!" A few times a year she'll bring in her laptop and projector and show National Geographic-type videos on the wall so we can imagine ourselves deep in the forest, or out on the savanna, or under the ocean. In December, she plays a slideshow of all the momentous occasions that happened that year. Cristina really goes above and beyond making spin not just about the exercise, but making it an experience of the body and the mind. I always look forward to her classes. She doesn't call you out if you're going too slow, and she doesn't often tell you exactly what RPM you need to be at, like other instructors do; she very much lets you personalize your own workout by using the structure she has created, which is perfect, because some days you want to burn 1,000 kcals and other days you had trouble getting out of bed. She includes a lot of variety in her workouts: lots of climbs, sprints, jumps, and four corners. Stephen is also dabomb dot com. His charmingly self-deprecating sense of humor---"ugh, this is so HARD for me today!"---serves to take your mind off your workout and, before you know it, you've busted your ass without really thinking about it. Stephen loves sprints. He'll often tell you to go about 20 RPM higher than you had previously thought possible, and often in a gear higher than you're accustomed to. You will sweat your booty off in this class, to be sure. The Saturday morning class fills up crazy fast. The Sunday morning is 90 minutes of pure awesomeness. You should stay for all 90 minutes if you can---for your chance at burning 1,200+ kcals---but he gives us an extended recovery time just before the sixty-minute mark, and doesn't look down on you if you decide to leave at that point. I also take classes with Monique (Tuesdays, 5:45 p.m.) and Kristen (Thursdays, 5:30 p.m.), when I can't make one of Cristina's classes, and I've been trying to work Kristen's 5:35 a.m. Friday class into my repertoire (that one is frustrating to get to: the gym doesn't open till 5:30 a.m. and there's always a line of folks at the door waiting to fill up all the bikes). Monique is friendly and sweet as can be and recently took five minutes off teaching classes to have a baby before she returned looking almost exactly as she did before she got pregnant. Kristen hollers atcha---similar to Bo's style, if you had one of her classes before---and Friday mornings you can hear her voice echoing throughout the gym. And she'll call you out if you look like you're pedaling too slow, for sure. Both instructors give very specific ranges of RPM and levels of exertion; both have obviously put a lot of thought into how you should maximize your workout, and Kristen in particular comes in with some crazy themes for every single class. Some days this is absolutely what I want and need, and I always leave their classes feeling like I kicked some butt. Both instructors' classes are super high energy and enjoyable no matter what. And I also wanted to rec Jim's Monday 6:30 p.m. TRX class, since I have supplanted his muscle pump class with that. It is by far the hardest TRX class I have taken at FW. As usual, he doesn't give you breaks---taken 'em when you need 'em---and he'll have you doing pushups till the cows come home. I bring two towels to his class because I sweat nearly as much in there as I do in spin. read more

Hooray! This is my new gym and I am super happy with it. They have great group fitness classes, including spinning and zumba (I have a crush on zumba). My only gripe is that they currently only have one zumba class a week, but I am sure that could change if there is enough interest. I am very interested in trying out more classes, I did not know there were so many ways to get rid of the love handles. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. They have plenty of equipment, and I have never had to wait for a cardio machine (even at the peak hours I attend). They even have smoothies - what better way to gain back all the calories you burned off?? read more

We really like this gym for the price. I am in law school and they gave my boyfriend and I a student discount. 59 bucks a both for both. The downsides are: the group workout rooms are small, no pool, and a small basketball court. HOWEVER, the classes they do have are amazing and the instructors whoop my out-of-shape butt. :) read more

I've been coming to this gym for almost a year now. It suits my needs fairly well, and the location is great for me, but I think it is a bit overpriced. I do not care for the evening Zumba class instructors - they are beginners and their classes are too easy for me. The morning Zumba instructors are much better, but due to a change in my schedule I can't go to the 9:30am Zumba classes anymore. So I often end up doing Zumba elsewhere in the evenings. The yoga and pilates classes are good as well as the kettlebell classes. (I am too scared to try TRX - maybe one day! It looks intense!) But during yoga and pilates classes noise carries over from the adjacent basketball court, which can be annoying. I really wish they would do something about that. Also, the gym closes ridiculously early on Saturdays and Sundays. On Sundays they close at 5 pm! Some of us have no life and need to exercise at that time! But, I like the steam room, and the fact that the clientele are a diverse mix of regular people. The cardio and weight machines are in decent condition. Also, they have a smoothie bar and, for the parents out there, child care! read more

I must admit I've been spoiled by XSport Fitness in DC. I moved to Durham two months ago and have been searching high and low for a great gym. On the search for a gym I decided to try Fitness World since it is the closest to my place. The mat area is very small and the amount of benches are few. It is also pretty packed most of the time. The cleanliness of the locker room is only decent and can use some work. My boyfriend visits me every week from out of town and we are looking for a gym that we can go to together since he will be moving to Durham soon. The staff was rude when we went there together and said he had to pay $10 dollars a day or $25 dollars a week to use the gym as a guest. I guess it seems reasonable to them to charge $100 a month. Since he visits me every week and is planning to move I thought he could try out the gym (they have a three-day trial). Instead they were rude and said he had to pay $10 dollars for less than an hr of workout (They were closing at 4pm and we got there at 3:05pm). They didn't even ask about our situation and just made assumptions. Needless to say I would rather spend my money somewhere else. For a small gym that does not have any other branches, they try to act like a big time gym. Customer service really is in a coma with this one. I will spend my time driving to a better gym further away than to give this place my money. *Check out their reviews on Google as well: https://plus.google.com/108686194522783396307/about?gl=us&hl=en 17 out of 30 is not a good look. read more

I was a member of this gym for a few years but quit due to unreliable wifi, dismissive employees and less than spectacular value. Fitness world has monthly fees on par with various other gyms in the area but does not feature a pool as many others do. An indoor pool would sure be nice during the winter. Their wifi is unreliable. On numerous occasions I have been unable to connect which I find to be of the utmost importance as I do mainly cardio and watch netflix while working out. In each case, when I have addressed the problem with employees, they find themselves too busy answering phones and checking people in to help. Some employees demonstrate a dismissive attitude, walking away from me to attend to obviously more important matters. It's frustrating to be told that wifi connections are my problem. They are open until 10 on weeknights, 7 on saturday and 6 on sunday. This didn't fit my schedule that well. With Any Time Fitness offering 24 hours, it seems that Any Time Fitness may be a bit more useful. If you do make it to the gym before 8 or 9 pm, it's pretty busy. I suspect their lousy wifi is due to not having the bandwidth to support the traffic they get at busy times of day. read more

If you're looking to join a great local gym, I'd highly recommend picking Fitness World. It gives you everything you need in a gym, with reasonable fees. They also usually have some sort of promotion going on with reduced enrollment fees also. The staff are all friendly and welcoming. They don't make you feel uncomfortable venturing to the gym. The bathrooms/locker rooms also have just been renovated and are really nice. If you like to watch TV while working out, you came to the right place too because you can see a TV from any machine. The gym is super clean and the equipment is all in pretty good shape. They have a lot of treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, and rowing machines. They have 3 step machines so keep an eye out when one opens up for a good leg workout! They also have tons of weight machines. Really any weight machine you would want to use, they probably have it. There's two mat stations for stretching and abs and you can usually find a spot on them. In addition to the machines, this gym offers an ample amount of classes. From weight lifting to boxing to Zumba they really do it all. My favorite class is the barre lattes class. It's a lot of fun! There's also even cycling and TRX classes. Really, there's everything here. You can easily sign up for cycling and TRX online now to reserve your spot. After work hours can get crowded, but that's expected of any gym. Fitness World is a great local gym to join! read more

I recently joined this gym. It is clean and well-lit and the people I met when I joined were very friendly and helpful. Every time I've come in to work out, the people at the front desk don't say anything to me! I own a business in Chapel Hill (restaurant) and also have another job that is very "client dependent" so I'm very conscious of the fact that my business isn't the only game in town so I'd better let people know how much I appreciate them! At Fitness World, I always say Hello first, and Have a Great Day or something like that when I leave. They usually respond if I say it first, but before I say anything when I arrive, they just kind of look away. This has happened with a young man at the desk and also an older gentleman. Remember that there are other places to work out! Let people know every time they come in and leave how GLAD you are to see them and how much you want them to come back again! read more

This gym is just okay. Most of the basic equipment is new enough and well maintained enough. But do not waste your money joining AMP. There are only a couple good instructors for this premium class, the equipment is old and dirty, and the space is too tight. I'd been planning to cancel my membership this summer after my full year commitment, because again, it isn't worth the cost. But I am irate and the way they are handling the COVID-19 closure. They have not given the option to cancel, or freeze memberships. I know that they still want to support themselves, but with my partner out of work due to the pandemic, and I cannot afford to give them money for services that aren't being provided. I have expressed this multiple times and I have not gotten a reply. If you still plan to charge me for services that aren't being provided, then the least you can do is reply to an email. read more

I rarely review anything besides restaurants but I try to speak up about local businesses that deserve some special recognition (positive or negative!) When I moved from FL a few years ago I was disappointed to not find a gym near my home that had individual TV's on the machines or a souped-up spa, pool, etc. Fitness World was close and had all the basic essentials so I joined anyway. So glad I did! The class schedule is great and I spin several (ok, like 4) days per week and the instructors are all great. The staff is super helpful and friendly and the facilities are well-maintained. The hours could be a little better (i.e. they open at 5:30am, would prefer some earlier hours) and some of the machines need to be replaced (hellooo...can you replace the ellipticals?) but overall this is a good local gym that you'll grow to love. read more

Nice and friendly staff, clean and well organized gym with just the right equipment. The class schedule has a lot to offer, morning, afternoons and evenings, 7 days a week. There's an indoor basketball court and generous amount of cardio machines. I would have given Fitness World 5 stars, for a gym at this location, if they were open later in the evenings on the weekends and if their lockers came with keys or a code, instead of needing separate locks. A very nice gym with a lot of parking right outside. I'm sold. :) read more

Truly a great family gym with up to date equipment. They have the best prices around as membership includes all classes and childcare. Fitness World is a bright small gym that offers all of the basics. I was very happy with my decision to switch to this gym. I think it's very inviting a lot: cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, kettle bells, TRX, fitness classes, trainers, steam room, showers, lockers. They are constantly making improvements and I've never experienced issues with lots of broken down equipment like I have at other gyms. If I could change one thing about Fitness World it would be the hours. I wish it was open past 10pm of weekdays and past 5pm on Sunday for those who have free time at later hours. But they probably don't get enough traffic at late hours to justify it. For some, the fact that they don't offer towels may be a con, but I don't mind it and prefer it to gyms that offer disgusting yellow Towels and somehow charge you for it. Other than that, it's great. read more

I have been a member of FW for over a year, but am just now starting to take part in some of the group classes they offer. I do wish the gym had a pool, but still chose FW over the Y because they give a great teacher discount. ($33/month- cheapest gym I've ever been in!) So far, most of the classes have kicked my but- Jim's TRX class on Mondays is the best work out I've ever had. He doesn't take breaks, is always circulating the room, and is constantly differentiating instruction for various ages/abilities. For a fun cardio, but much less intense, workout- try Zumba. I prefer Tracy's classes on Monday and Tuesday night, it feels more like dancing and less like step aerobics. It's fun, but not very hard. The only class I've taken and hated was Stephanie's Thursday night Yoga. I didn't get the impression she was very knowledgeable, and it was far less relaxing than Zumba should be. Hope this helps! read more

Great equipment. Very clean. Helpful and courteous staff. Reasonable membership price. A great place.

I've enjoyed working out at Fitness World for the last 6 months. Within the last couple of years, I have more or less gotten out of shape and gained about 20 pounds. About 6 months ago, my friend Brock invited me to try a spin class at Fitness World to see if I liked the gym. From the moment I walked in, everyone was so friendly. The front desk staff were incredibly nice at helping me complete the guest pass and generally seemed to enjoy their jobs. When I entered the spin classroom, I was met with Monique who was so incredibly nice. She was all smiles, welcomed me to the class, and even helped me find the correct seat adjustments as it was my first class. Based on that first experience, I joined the gym. The monthly rate was great given my work discount. After barely going to the gym once or twice a week, I decided I needed help getting in shape, so I signed up for a personal trainer. Ben Kirchner has trained me about 2-3 times ever since and has been incredibly patient with me. Although some days I feel defeated before I even walk into the workout, he has encouraged me all along the way. It has now been a little over 4 months and I have lost about 15 pounds (woo hoo), had more energy, and generally been happier despite a few personal challenges. It's wonderful to walk into a gym and be greeted by first name with the staff at the front desk as well as the other personal trainers and staff. I highly recommend this gym. read more

I have been a member at FW since it first opened. One of the best things is that they keep it clean and it has never once had the smell of a gym! Very friendly staff/owners. Their 5k is a great community support and brings in lots of locals to build community. Keep up the great work and thanks! read more

I was a bit apprehensive as I entered Fitness World since I had never been to a gym before, but as soon as I entered the door I was greeted by smiling faces and made to feel welcome. I have been a member for six weeks and I look forward to my almost daily visits. Since I have a flexible schedule, I decided to arrive after the 10 A.M. rush making the numerous types of equipment readily available. The machines are well maintained and clean, as are the bathrooms and locker room. Even though there are gyms closer to my home, I feel very comfortable here and plan to stay on. The prices are very reasonable and parking is not an issue since it is located in a shopping center. I also like the fact that the clientele is diverse. read more

This gym had its ups and downs as far as a facility goes, but it's biggest asset is a woman named Stormy. Things were kept transparent. Much appreciated. read more

Zumba.Is.Hard. But really fun! I went as a guest of a friend to test out the zumba class so I didn't have a chance to use the other equipment, etc. (hence the 4 and not 5 stars). Since I'm moving soon, I didn't want to persue a membership, but if I were staying in the area I would totally join! They have an amazing amount of equipment, the classes are plentiful, the facilities are nice...not what you might expect from the shopping center it's located in, and they have smoothies...how can that be bad? I'm not sure of membership fee or anything, but I do know if you're going as a guest of a member (and they don't have a guest pass for you) it's a $10 cost. read more

This is a fantastic local gym. The spin program is the best around - great instructors (check out Brock, he's amazing) and now they have all new bikes and an updated spin room. In addition to all the standard cardio and weight equipment you would expect, they also have an AMP fitness program, which offers members a high intensity way to get (and stay) in shape. They also have a solid variety of (free) group classes that are a great way to workout - I especially enjoy the kettlebell class and the boxing circuit run by Ben. If you want to work out with a personal trainer there are a lot of great options as well. read more

I joined last weekend after a year hiatus from working out. Sarah Hubbard gave a thorough and very informative tour which I appreciated so much!! She encouraged me to try all the different classes and showed me how to earn free personal training sessions. I tried a Boxing class with Ben and was pleasantly surprised how great of a workout I got! Today I had a fitness evaluation with Cameron and it was wonderful to get a workout schedule/plan in place to reach my goals! The bathrooms and private saunas/steam rooms in the locker rooms and a nice touch to relax after a workout without worrying about who all will be joining you. The showers are spotlessly clean and I would actually consider showering there if I didn't live half a block away. Looking forward to getting back in shape and earning personal training sessions!! read more

Fitness world is a great place with plenty of fun and challenging workout classes going on throughout the entire day. They have calendars online our at the gym posting the variety of different classes ranging from zumba to yoga to trx and boxing. The staff are very friendly and happy to help. They also have personal trainers available. My favorite thing is they also have an indoor basketball court, spin cycle room, and a locker room which has a sauna and steam room inside. Not many gyms around here have these available so it's a great perk. They are currently doing renovations on the locker rooms to make them even bigger and nicer which should be done by the end of year/ January. If you come tour the gym, they will also give you a free three day pass to come and go unlimited as you please for those 3 days. read more
