F45 Training

F45 Training

Very strong community across all classes that I've visited. I think this is a function of the…read moresmaller class sizes, older and more ethnically diverse demographic (though there is uniform probability of any age being represented) and the more personable trainers + studio manager leadership. Classes are normally limited to 36 people, though presently, I think it's limited to 12 for COVID. Masks are worn for indoor workouts, doors are opened for circulation. Come check it out and tell them I sent you :) Shoutout to Tripp, Daniel and Bimala. Very cool trainers and people who love what they do and the people they are coaching.

Earlier this year I joined F45 as a way to get back in shape, and be healthier overall. I had…read morepreviously tried things like T25 (Videos), and in the past had been a gym member (lifting weights); but none of them really kept me motivated and coming back...nor was I really very dedicated to cardio work. F45 kind of changed all that. Each session is pretty intense as far as a workout goes, but it's all about how hard you push yourself. Exercises can be slower and easy, or fast and hard (or slow and hard ;-) ) depending on how you feel, and your level of confidence. However, the trainers that are there to help you along and the team of people that you work out with that help you to get motivated make all the difference. The folks that come there are super friendly and engaging; and the trainers are personable and non-judgemental ;-) . It's a high intensity workout, and it's easy to get a lot out of it so long as you go on a regular basis. All that being said, I'm a fan of F45. There are some things that make it better (perhaps) than others: - Erika (the trainer that is usually there when I go) is super friendly and helpful; she's always greeting you with a smile on her face, and ending the day with high-fives; and during the workouts she's letting you know where you can improve - or where you can push yourself harder. - The changing exercises daily (both in terms of timing, flow, and exercises themselves) keep things from getting dull; and you're focusing on different body parts - which is also great. - There are NO TREADMILLS; it's personal - but I'm not a fan of those things at all, so the lack of them is a plus for me. I've met several nice people at the local F45, and although none of them have invited me or my family over for dinner, I remain hopeful. Seriously though - the people are great, the trainers are great, and they have these heart monitors you can strap on to see how much you are improving. I'd highly recommend you go and try it out if you're looking for something different, and engaging, in terms of high intensity interval training.

Silver Star Crossfit

Contrary to a common belief, not all CrossFit boxes are equal. Just like with any other popular…read moresport you can have either great or very bad experience, with a whole range in between. Silver Star is by far one of the best boxes in the area. Let me break it down for you. 1. Coaches. Josh, Craig, Kim and Jason are all extremely helpful and concerned with everyone's safety. Every class they provide extensive instruction on all of the movements, even familiar ones. Correct form is their number one, and they all make sure you do it in the most proper and safe way. Modifications are available for those with physical limitations or injuries, but fear not, you'll still get a workout that'll leave you sweating and out of breath. 2. The program. There are 4 Foundation classes offered for all new to CrossFit people. You learn the basic movements, safe technique and the lingo. The regular WODs (workouts of the day) are very challenging even for seasoned CrossFitters, but a number of modifications is always available. 3. The members. I cannot stress enough how nice everyone is. Most of the members are fairly new to CrossFit, having started with Silver Star opening just a few months ago. The memory of what it felt like starting up is still fresh, and they are always willing to share some tips, equipment and cheer on during group workouts. 4. Results. I've been going to Silver Star since December along with many other members and it definitely pays off. My goal was to gain strength and endurance, and little by little I'm lifting more every time and doing more reps. I see the results in other members as well. Better form, slimmer waistlines, higher lifting weight, more muscles mass. 5. Schedule. There are a lot of options for morning and afternoon, with the first session at 5:30 am (ugh crazy people) and the last at 7:30pm. Ask about yoga classes, they are offered a couple times a week as well. Sometimes there are useful workshops, such as Double Under Clinic, taught by outside instructors. In short, if you are new to CrossFit and curious about trying it Silver Star is the best place.

I would definitely recommend this to people who want to try something different and learn a new skill in the process!!

Fit Lab Studios

I just finished doing a 6-week challenge with the folks at South Durham CrossFit and had an amazing…read moreexperience! My goal was the lose 6% body fat in 6 weeks and I ended up losing 7% body fat and 10 pounds in 5 weeks. I had many misconceptions about CrossFit that initially turned me off to signing up (i.e. its just for meatheads, you do complex movements with no instruction, there isn't any science/thought behind the workout plans), but my experience with the program, the people who were members, and the instructors couldn't be further from my initial thoughts. An extreme amount of thought and care went into designing the program. The meal plan, workouts, coaching and social support were expertly woven together to make for a seamless experience. It addressed every pitfall one might encounter when starting a new fitness program (sticking to a meal plan, meal prepping, losing motivation, stress) and made it as easy as possible to succeed. The members there were great. They were encouraging and friendly. Almost everyone I worked out with came up and introduced themselves to me, and were very helpful if I needed advice on a movement or was struggling with a workout. The coaches were experts. A special shout out to Amy Depolo and Jason Carley who I trained with most frequently during my challenge. Both were extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and motivating. Both great as coaches and people you would want to grab a beer with after class. Overall I give the program an A+ and would encourage anyone who is looking to transform there body and commit to the program to join South Durham Crossfit.

You are able to focus on your goals and gain motivation from the rest of the members without feeling like you are alone. But all of this is nothing if the gym, members, and coaches are not approachable and welcoming. That was the first thing I noticed about the gym and haven't looked back. With a focus on not only training hard but also doing things together outside of the gym it offers a community and support that is missing from some of the other boxes. Highly recommended to anyone looking to start their journey or to finally accomplish what you've been meaning to for years.
