Crossfit Durham was, hands down, my favorite place to work out when I lived in North Carolina.

Outdoor boot camp. You might not feel Marine-ready after, but you :will: feel like a bad-ass. On…read moreTuesday and Thursday, they offer Boot Camp and Zumba at 7pm, for $5. You'll pay, start with 5 laps, and a warm-up of jumping jacks, high-knees and so on. Then you'll split into groups of ~6-8 and start the real work-out. The day I went, it consisted of quick weight-lifting intervals done with makeshift equipment -- sand bags, heavy poles, etc. -- and/or body weight. I thought there was a good mix of upper- and lower-body focus. And my heart rate stayed up for most of the hour. Frankly, I thought the exercises could have been more challenging. But given the heat, and dirt, and bugs that come with working out outside, the less-intense level was kind of nice. The instructor offered some encouragement, and engaged with the group to keep us motivated, but also keep the mood light-hearted. There were about an equal number of girls and guys, and the group's fitness level was very diverse. So it's not too intimidating! Parking is kind of a pain-in-the-butt (my car got blocked in behind a few layers of late arrivals), but there's a neighboring lot that I noticed other people were spilling over into, so I'd recommend doing that.

The huge tires outside caught my attention while driving by the area and I decided to stop by and…read morecheck this place out. I tried the outdoor/indoor class and absolutely love the workouts concept, specially flipping the big tires around. I was sore for a couple of days but ready to come back for more. I received a promotion value for a month and took advantage of every class I could. Well, my promotion ran out and I'm not a big fan of the "membership" value $$$ which you are paying basically for the limited classes and not for the use of the whole gym if you want to. I also believe that some good workout music will be a plus while indoors to keep you pumped through the intensive workouts. If you want to change up your workout routine, I highly recommend this gym.

I've been attending the Community Workouts at The 360 Approach for a couple weeks now because I'll…read moreadmit: they're addictive! The 360 Approach is a small, indoor, personal (they call themselves "boutique") fitness studio geared towards individuals or groups in a holistic way. Their aim is to look at the individual from a physical, mental and spiritual standpoint; and while I don't feel very spiritual when I'm working out, I certainly feel welcomed and supported at 360! Chan and Sariah are amazing instructors, they know your name and they know how to push you. The Community Workouts on Saturday mornings (7a, 8a & 9a) are fantastic! These 45 minute sessions get you awake and working your body in new ways each week. Most of these classes revolve around intervals or circuit training. You'll begin with a warmup and go into anything from tire flips, hill sprints, stair climbs (they are on the first floor of a five store building, perfect for stair running!), pull-up's and lots of weighted exercised. The instructors take time to explain each exercise and they won't partake in the class with you, but instead monitor and correct form (or just encourage you along the way!) 360 offers a large variety of classes, from fitness bootcamp classes to high intensity interval training and core, cardio and toning class to group runs, kettle bell classes and even zumba. Most of their classes are in the morning with the exception of a handful of Monday and Wednesday evening classes which go until 5:30pm and Zumba at 6:30pm on Tuesdays. They also participate in a lot of community fitness events and have teams for many of the local races. They'll provide you with sweat towels and water bottles at the studio, and while there are lockers at the studio, you won't find a bathroom locker area or showers. Make sure you follow them on Facebook for special offers.

My only hesitation for writing this review is that too many folks will want to join on. But of…read morecourse, that would be bad form. So I cannot resist but to share how wonderful my experience has been. Chan has created a supportive community of strength and wellness. She has the most interesting circuits and knows exactly how to encourage each person to improve their physical and mental strength. This is a great place for newbies interested in getting healthier in a welcoming space.

Like many people in 2020, finding a place to work out safely has been very difficult. I had no idea…read morewhat to do as an extrovert who loves Group Fitness classes, because it helps me get a little bit more energy. That's where my summer Y membership came into place. I ended up utilizing the outdoor spin classes at this location frequently, and cannot say enough good things about Chuck, the fitness instructor. As far as I know, there are a few other outdoor classes, but the spin classes are my jam. I love Chuck's energy, the music, and the fact that I get a super hard ride in once a week. I believe he teaches three classes per week, but the Sunday class is my favorite. So grateful that the YMCA has provided us with a safe way to get our fitness on. Thank you!

By far my favorite YMCA in Durham. While the American Tobacco Campus lacks a swimming pool, steam…read moreroom and sauna, it makes up for it in the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff, cleanliness of the lockers and equipment and it's the least crowded Y I've been to in the area. I most often visit the gym between 9:30-12:00pm, and there is never more then a handful of clients during those hours at this Y. Mostly professionals that work at Tobacco Campus, people are quiet and stick to themselves. Also, note that this location is also only open on weekdays, conducive to professionals! I've never had a Y attendant be more attentive to me, one of the staff asked me if I was doing okay during my workout routine and offered helpful suggestions. Their quality of equipment is on par with the Lakewood facilities but is more updated with the NikeFit application on the treadmills and built in fans (you also have a beautiful waterfall view!). They also have a private bike room (not a glass room like the downtown Y) and a couple private workout classrooms for classes. My only qualms about this Y are that parking can be rough to find and there's a two hour limit on the street and in the deck. In addition, the water pressure in the woman's bathroom is like a deep-tissue massage. It's not bad, but startled me at first and I could see people having an issue with that. Since this location is only open during weekdays and not late, it's definitely more geared towards the local work crowd. Last, the lockers in the woman's room are much smaller then your typical YMCA lockers, so bring a small gym back or just try to shove it all in. I switch off my YMCA's since I work, live and socialize near three different locations, but I was very happy to discover this mostly hidden branch. Be sure to check it out if you're looking for a quiet atmosphere and a place where there will always be open equipment. Also, they've got coffee for you on your way out, how much better can it get?! Elite Note: If you feel like running outdoors, the ATT starts on the other side of the highway and goes for 22 miles!
