Massage is such a personalized art that it's difficult to say (beyond objective training, knowledge, and breadth of technique, of course) whether one therapist is 'better' than another. We all prefer different approaches, techniques, amounts of pressure, areas of focus, even atmosphere. But Kevin is a perfect match for all my preferences. I appreciate his extensive knowledge of muscle groups and connections, and that he talks me through what he's targeting as he targets it (I'm sure if I asked for quiet he'd be fine with that too, but I like having a side of education with my massages). He is very collaborative with his approach and asks for feedback and what's working and what isn't, what will be better to focus more or less on next time. This means every subsequent massage will be better and more tailored to what I need. And all the cerebral stuff aside - his massages just FEEL GOOD. Sometimes things are good-on-the-edge-of-painful, but that's how I like it - that's when it feels like it's working. He targets all of the knots I develop with my chronically messed up spine, some I'm aware of, most I'm not. But when he gets to them and I feel things releasing, I know they were in there. He also never does that thing some therapists do where they think they're working out a knot but are just pressing painfully on a bone over and over. It's hard to describe how good a massage can be in words, but I think you get the picture. You should absolutely give Kevin a try, especially if you're having trouble finding a therapist you really like.

I've been to Kevin for massage therapy at least half a dozen times now and he really is fantastic…read more He can do everything from a light, relaxing Swedish massage to a deep trigger-point release and everything in between, or combine them for a session that's relaxing, energizing, and therapeutic! He's really good at finding the knots and working them out. He can also identify some of your problem areas and suggest stretches you can do at home to make those muscles feel and work better (but isn't preachy or pushy about it). He's friendly, pleasant, and doesn't try to chitchat with you during your massage like some therapists I've been to. (Maybe he will if you want to; I like to be quiet during massages, so he doesn't talk to me except to occasionally ask how the pressure is.) Kevin works out of a chiropractic/wellness office and the facility is relaxing, comfortable, super-clean, and cozy. It's a little tricky to find the first time, but it's convenient to many parts of Durham and there's plenty of parking right in front of the door. His table is comfortable and the lotion he uses is very nice--not greasy or overly fragrant like I've had at some massage therapists in the past, where you hate to put your clothes back on at the end because you wonder if you'll ever get the oil out of them. I really feel like you get a better-than-spa quality massage for MUCH lower-than-spa prices with Kevin. I highly recommend him.

She is so creative and changes her approach every visit, so it never feels like the same old thing. Plus, her head/face massages are her secret gems! By my second Rolfing session with Julie, my headaches went away completely. I had not felt relief in so long. I've continued to see her when I hit a rough patch & it always helps. It's been about a year & my chronic migraines have not returned. She's helped me address other issues & ailments, always patient & caring. She's also referred me to other types of practitioners when she feels I might benefit from a different type of care. This type of honesty is deeply appreciated, & I really feel like her commitment lies in making sure her clients heal. My husband has also loved working with Julie. The space is really nice, too. Lastly - bc I wish people talked about this more - as can often happen with bodywork, there was one session where some past trauma surfaced for me unexpectedly. In those scenarios, I have often felt ashamed & embarrassed by my reactions bc they often come flying out of nowhere & can be difficult to control. Not all practitioners I've worked with seem prepared for this or able to offer trauma-informed care, but Julie's calm & gentle presence in this moment made me feel extremely safe, respected, & seen in my moment of vulnerability. Her "office" is in a gorgeous, tree-lined street with old homes that reminded me of my favorite neighborhoods in Austin. First off, she listened attentively to my issues and what I was and was not looking for in a RMT. She completely respected everything I said and got to work. It turned out we are both musicians, so we had a nice chat about that for one thing, and another was that she then understood the muscular and overuse issues I have. On a strictly personal note, I loved that she played more acoustic, Americana, folky music rather than the usual New Age jam that a lot of RMTs play. That is purely a personal preference of mine and I'm betting she can accommodate if that's what you prefer. Sheilah was definitely worth the drive from Cary for me.

Amazing massage!…read more After buying a Groupon for a 90-minute massage, I reached out to Sheilah to book an appointment. I was not sure what to expect, booking with a Groupon, but my experience was great! Sheilah called me back that day and booked me for an appointment within a week. I liked that she sent text messages to confirm and remind me about my appointment. Sheilah was even more wonderful in person. Her massage practice is located upstairs in a beautiful home. The room itself was peaceful, and comfortable, and had lots of natural night. Birds chirped outside the window. At the beginning of the appointment, Sheilah took some time to get to know me, and learn what I wanted to get out of the massage. Her approach was different than any massage I've experienced. When she started the massage, she offered some spoken words, like a yoga instructor, guiding me to a more relaxed place. I found myself following along, and breathing more slowly. As she continued, I started to let go and relax. The massage was like a restorative mediation. When I left, I felt better in my body than I had felt in months! The intense muscle tightness and aches in my neck and shoulders were gone, and a day later, I still feel the benefits. What an extraordinary massage experience-thank you Sheilah!
