We recently had an Inspection done by Building Specs Hawaii on a home that has been impeccably maintained. Vance, from Building Specs created a 308 page report of items to be addressed. Upon delivery of the inspection, the owners hired licensed contractors in each field to come deal with all of the issues on the report that Vance had listed. 9 out of 10 items were NOT issues at all. As the owners continued to hire professionals to come in and deal with items on the list, they paid professionals to chase ghosts. I believe i used BSH about 7 years ago at our first home and they were great from what I remembered, but this time, not so great. i wasn't happy with their service this time around because: 1. they said my subzero fridge ice maker is broken. Hired someone to come take a look, changed a few settings, and ice was being made. 2. said my doorbell is not working. I found the receiver/speaker in the cupboards, plugged it in and it works. 3. a couple bath faucets had no hot water when you turn the faucet knob, the water shut-off valve was turned off. He was afraid to turn it on to check it, and if it leaks after turning it on, they would be responsible. I mean, isn't that what i'm paying you to do? check if it works or not? read more

I had a positive experience with Jesse and Building Specs some time ago. I'm posting this someone recently asked me for a home inspector recommendation and I noticed someone left a negative review and called out Jesse by name. Jesse was professional and took his time to explain what he found. It was late in the day, and a long inspection, yet he was willing to answer any and all questions. I didn't deal with scheduling since my Realtor took care of that. But my Realtor is picky and only recommends the best people. We purchased an apartment and had to do the inspection virtually. Jesse was easy to work with, and he showed us things he found both on video and on a very detailed report. He also provided photos for the things he found, which was helpful because some of the contractors who I got quotes from needed to see the pictures of what I was talking about. We had an amazing experience with Building Specs of Hawaii! They were on a list provided by our realtor. We did our due diligence and checked out each website and after reading through their services and testimonials decided to go with this company. WE ARE SO GLAD WE DID! This is our first home and going through the process its pretty intimidating. Especially when the inspector says their report is 150+ pages long! From the start the inspectors were welcoming and spoke in terms that were understandable. They weren't caught off guard that we arrived 15 minutes early, and were actually done with the inspection and wrapping up the report. As we walked room to room, inside or outside, Jesse swiped through photos that explained each concern... He was very clear and easy to understand. They had markers (blue painters tape) throughout the home and was very thorough down to the littlest issue. Even spaces not easily accessible, like crawl spaces under the house or the attic, were addressed with visuals of each area and included specific photos of concerns/problems. Overall, my husband and I left understanding our report which to me is a big plus! I was truly worried I wouldn't understand terms or phrases, but Jesse made it so easy! Very disappointed in our home inspection as there were areas the home inspector, Jesse, missed. I will name two later but there were more. He failed to bring a stand alone ladder to the inspection so couldn't reach certain areas. He wasn't sure what a covered access panel was for either. I don't think he bothered to open the panel and look. There were two ceiling fan remotes for two ceiling fans. One had a battery one did not. He said the fan worked in one but didn't know about the light, whether it needed a bulb or had a short. He shrugged his shoulders. He didn't have the proper ladder to check, nor did he bother to switch the batteries to check. I checked after he left by removing the batteries in one remote and placing in the other. Low and behold the light worked. The effort was so simple and yet he failed to check. There are other things he missed. My husband emailed and asked about. The emailed went unanswered until I followed up a few days later. The answers were mostly unsatisfactory. We did get a 4% military discount which almost paid for the tax on the service. There are things the house is automatically grandfathered yet we were told they are not up to code. Yes, by today's building standards. I recommend you look elsewhere. I think there are better inspectors out there. read more

Very poor customer service. This is an extremely small island. And providing top notch service to all customers is key. When a business treats there potential customers poorly word will get out. Unfortunately this is one of these instances. The person whom handles there scheduling needs to re evaluate there skills. And hopefully treat potential customers with more gratitude that they are even considering using there services. Otherwise they will not be around for very long. I got to view the comment that Barry the owner wrote, however his statement "On this particular day, we felt it was too much discomfort and a strain on this tenant for us to conduct our inspection service and we politely declined our service to our client and recommended a follow up on a different day when the tenant was more accepting. " This makes me angry because although I can't say for sure he was aware of everything that happened that day. The most I can say is he was MISINFORMED. For starters I already told you what happened. Now I read comments about how good this company is and how the owner seems to be a great guy. This may be true but my experience didn't show that. Those two guys were something else. The Realtor even had problems with them. However my rating was based on my experience and I had a bad one. After the statement the owner made, I;m sorry but my feelings remain the same. Especially when I emailed and left a voice message and no one to this date contacted me. Which is fine but to me that statement is contradictory. Those guys should find another job. read more
