I don't know if the people that left more than one star just don't have taste buds or just live a basic ass life. But I'm a big guy so I know my food. Let me walk you through my experience. We first arrive greeted buy a guy with an attitude. It's an Ayce buffet so I'm not expecting much. But compared to other places I expect decent service and to be treated somewhat reasonable. We sat down at 7:30 and our friend got lost. We were reminded several times they close at 9:30. 2 hours before they closed. They didn't have much on the buffet line nor did they refill the line until a bunch of us basically got onto them to refill it. The food was mediocre at best. Edible but not delicious by any means. I've been to buffets cheaper than this and the food was incredible. Drinks were not refilled but every 30 minutes or so. Host guy has a huge attitude. Calm down, you're a host. I'm not sure why this place gets a 3.8. I'm not being bitter or unreasonable. I understand it's not gonna be perfect and you take your chances. But I can cook these dishes better at home. And I will before going here again. You couldn' pay me to go here. It's the arrogance from the staff for me. It's the lack of flavor and making up rules for me. They started shutting G everything down at 9 and never told us the hibachi closed at 9. Just assumed we would know. Never came back for a refill. Never again. Do yourself a favor and do not go here. I normally don't eat buffets, but a friend asked me to tag along to try a new restaurant opened in Houston. It originated in Austin, since they advertised on late night TV repeatedly that prompt my curiosity. Buffet King is located outside of Chinatown and conveniently near Westpark Toll Road on Highway 6. PRO's: The air in the lobby was very pleasant and breathable, unlike most restaurants, I can hardly smell anything, including food. Once entering the dining area, I could see the grand view with an open concept. All staff spoke English and they were genuinely friendly. I'd rate them A+ for cleanliness: The sitting areas were not sticky. Bathroom was spotless. Dining area had plenty of room to walk through. FOOD: Sushi Bar - The sushi tasted same regardless of their varieties, no matter the shapes or key ingredients. Wasabi was just a tasteless green paste. Sashimi was just defrosted fish with little or no flavor. However, Vietnamese summer rolls were the best - fresh, moist and easy to handle. Mongolian BBQ - When we got there, the grill was off. I saw few people ordered but I didn't like the way they stir fry the food. I sampled my friend's "creation." Oh, no. The sliced beef was tough like leather. Soups - The easiest way to please my appetite is good soup. Unfortunately, they failed. The egg flower soup had yellow coloring, wontons were missing from the broth, hot and sour soup was too gummy and vegetable soup tasted like soup pot washing soup. Seafood - I had to point it out. All peeled shrimps came from same source - defrosted from freezer. Doesn't matter how they were cooked, they tasted the same (few pieces tasted like ammonia). Cocktail shrimp tasted freshest. Crab legs were plump and prepared with flavors. Dessert Bars - I could tell they didn't bake the pastries because they were still sitting in the packaging. They tasted fine. My favorites were lychee flavored gelatin and soft serve with its toppings. CON's: We arrived at 3 pm and the dinner time started at 3:31 pm. I felt rushed by how fast they took our used plates away (even with food). Also, they cheated on the drinks: Pepsi was over-carbonated. I suspect those 2 tea bags in my tea pot were used, because it tasted like hot water. The iced water was just city tap without any filtering. We asked for the window seats but they only pulled the blind up 4 inches for us to look out. I don't know why they installed windows in the first place. In summary, since I didn't get sick from eating here and there are rooms for improvement. So I rated it as a-ok. This meal was a little expensive for me as I included toll, traffic and distance. I never post bad reviews, however I was RACIALLY PROFILED at this establishment today. Just as someone else has stated, I was made to pay my bill ahead of being seated. We were also two young black men. When I asked was this a new policy, I was told "because I'm the only person here and it's faster." However We were then seated by another gentleman who got mad because we asked not to sit all the way in the back of the restaurant. The seating issue happens just about every time I come here by the way. After being seated we purposely looked to see if others coming in were made to pay ahead of time and they weren't. The waitresses were so mean towards us. We are always big tippers but I regret leaving a tip ahead of time. There are plenty of Chinese Buffet restaurants in Houston, TX, but this buffet is the Best in Houston. They have variety of GREAT foods and crab legs. Everyone here are so nice and friendly. They treat you like family. The host, the waitresses, and waiters are so nice. Their services are phenomenal. They don't rush you. They let you enjoy the foods. today was the first time i've visited this location in about 6 months, i used to come here every other day with my friends back when it was good food AND customer service. Today me and my friend walked in & was greeted by Ada at the front counter. We were informed that we had to pay Before we were seated, though as i've said, i've been here plenty times before & this was the first i've ever heard of this. So i asked if this was something they just started to which she replied "no." I then asked if everybody else has had to pay before being seated, to which she replied-with hesitation "yes." Cleanest buffet I've ever been to in Houston. Here's my review: Food Quality (9/10) Large selections, they have mogolian grills as well. Foods seems fresh and not overly salted or MSG infused. Service: (3/10) This place is seriously understaffed. Nobody come to refill my water or clean up my table. This area need huge improvement. First time trying this place was on Christmas Day. Overall, I'm impressed. I usually don't eat at Chinese buffets but have wanted to try this place out for awhile. They have a good selection of sushi which I loved! They have a habachi grill area. What I liked most was that there was a lot of non-pork options. If you don't expect restraunt quality food, then it is not too bad. It is above average food for buffet quality. However, you'll pay more than you would at a normal restraunt. On the other hand there is a pretty good selection - and things like nuggets and pizza for those picky kids (although after looking at them, I would not personally eat them). The servers are more attentive with the drinks than almost any buffet that I have ever been to. Kudos to them. However if you have a complicated issue to resolve, there is a pretty bad language barrier - but since it is a buffet, you should not have an issue. Bathrooms were decent, but not amazing. Not sure what others are expecting at an all you can eat buffet that costs less than $20 per person (before drinks.) But my experience has been great every time. I ended up eating six large plates of crawfish. They were spicy and had bits of minced garlic. I also had two plates of chicken wings and sushi. I had two glasses of tea. My wife also enjoyed her food. She had one plate with several items (chicken, rice, shrimp, dumplings, sushi, egg roll, and pork) a bowl of soup and two glasses of tea. And yes, she sat patiently while I knocked out all of my plates. This was today, Sunday July 3rd around 2:30pm. With a $10 tip we spent $58.04. One on my friends recommended this place to me. She said they has unlimited crab legs on the weekends and the food was good so we decided to try it. This is one of my worst experience, the lady at the front desk is so rude. I come with my parents and my young brother, she looks at my brother and ask US just "How old?" Then we started eating. The cook who fries the uncooked food-by-choice is unprofessional, too. I went with my brother and he gave us two pieces of #2 to mark that they are our food. Then when we come back after he fries, there displays only my plate for #2, and my brother is a different number. I ask him and he says he has given me only one number for each person.
