    Lunch
    Wing C.

Stopped in Buffet Chinois Mandarin for lunch as part of 3 days tour. We were treated to their weekday lunch buffet. Our tour guide told us there are no better Chinese restaurant in the city. If true - Montreal, I feel sorry for you. The buffet spread, even from presentation alone, was enough drive us away. Every item was drenched in oil. Additionally, foods were almost never replenished. I walked around most of our time dining there with an empty plate. What I managed to pick onto my plate had either absolute no taste or carried a strange aftertaste. The only items I managed to stomach were their bread and a few veggie pieces from the soup (the soup itself was inedible). And it got worse - After our lunch, three members of the tour group suffered from severe stomach cramps and had to make an emergency rest stop. If buffet chinois mandarin is the best Chinese restaurant Montreal has to offer, I would recommend not to eat Chinese at all.

Ok selection of food. Good customer service. Desserts weren't great. A bit pricey. Friendly atmosphere.

We are vegetarians. Even it's a buffet, the owner made some vegetarian spring rolls and veggie soups for us. Very appreciated.

(hey it rhymes, how did I pull that off so easily lol) For 11.95 it was a pretty nice spread for a breakfast buffet especially when you concider that a ala cart meal is about the same price. One of the short comings of a breakfast buffet is the eggs. In this case they had some have decent cooked scrambled, which I abore bit I found out if you want made to order Sunnyside up and so forth, they are happy to make them for you no extra charge... wow really??? I almost fell over. They have a nice fruit station and also cereal and tea. Nice pastries and the bacon and sausages where really decent for a change. The only omplaints I have is the service can be a bit slow and they are not too at tentative to the bread station as it ran out of sliced bread and I never saw it refilled. I like the fact that you get a stainless coffee carafe on your table and it's it's a nice atmosphere.

I'm saved! I walked to dinner and sat facing the tropically landscaped large atrium like area of the hotel -- quite pleasant. As it turned out, the friendly bartender, whom I had met the night before, also was covering a couple of tables while tending bar. I had a soup that wasn't particularly memorable -- which is why I'm not telling what kind it was.....I don't remember... I also had a seafood Linguini that had a good assortment of sea critters in it, albeit very small pieces. It was a bit on the bland side for my taste, so I dumped a bunch of what appeared to be powdered Parmesan cheese. I prefer grated, but this was straight out of the Kraft can. Rodger, the friendly bartender kept my wine glass renewed and made good conversation. Bottom line, a solid 3 star experience bolstered by the glass of wine I was able to take back to my room!

They are a favorite of my entire family, with the exception of my mom. When my brother visits, he often buys a few dozen of these buns before driving home. His wife has since developed and perfected a recipe for the in-between visits. So what is a butter roll? Think brioche-type cinnamon roll but with butter slathered between the seams instead of a cinnamon-sugar mixture. And drizzled with icing sugar. It is that crave-worthy. And like any other baked good, best when fresh. We've gotten these butter rolls from here many times; I'm uncertain if they are available at other Quartier Chinois bakeries. Additionally, the zongzi is stellar here. Zongzis are similar to tamales but instead of corn husks, think bamboo leaves, and instead of masa, think glutinous rice. They are filled with pork belly, Chinese sausages, salted egg yolk, dried shrimp, green beans (mung beans), etc., depending on the chef. Personally, both of these items are worth the trip when in the area.

I would highly recommend getting the sesame rice cake which was the best item here. The har gow flavoring was solid but the skin was a bit on thick side. The art work on the walls, the intricate chairs and laterns, beautiful carpets were very impressive. The art part of the evening was amazing! We were four girls and we all loved the teacher, we had a blast. The food part of the evening was a huge disappointment. When I made the reservation I was told we would have a choice of tapas, there was no choice. The waitress did not even bother to explain what it was we were eating when she brought the food to the table. The first tapas came in a small serving dish and tasted like frozen spinach, mixed with oil and what I could only assume was little bits of ground beef. No salt or seasoning what so ever, and it had one tortilla chip in it. The chip was the best part. The second tapas was a mixture of grated carrot, mixed with lots of oil and a lot of prunes! I had about 8 prunes in my dish. There was some chicken as well, but again, no seasoning. At the start of the evening we thought we might stay longer, order more food perhaps...we quickly changed our minds on that. Also the waitress seemed like she wanted us to leave so she could close up. All in all, we had fun, but the food left much to be desired. Far too pretentious for the price.

We were approximately 8 people and everyone swore to complain and to write a review. First it took them about 20 minutes to bring us drinks we ordered. Then we had to ask them twice for ice because all drinks were warm. 10 minutes later they finally found the ice. Appetizer was not cooked properly; I will leave it at that. Main meal was just ok. Medium rare stake turned out well done. Sauce with the stake was good, but rest was so-so. Wine menu is practically non-existent. In the middle of our dinner staff interrupted our event by bringing left-over sweets from the buffet they had in another part of restaurant and lightning candles for my friend`s anniversary. Honorable intent of course, but two problems with that. We were in the middle of our main meal, so everyone was shocked at how poor their timing was. And of course second is the fact that it was composed of left overs and was far from being presentable. Temperature in the room was too hot for most people, all women complained. Lightning was way too bright. Staff kept mixing orders all the time and forgetting simple requests. The only positive I can think of is decor; they have done a good job with making it look nice and unique. In the end we all left extremely frustrated to say the least. I hope this helps anyone thinking of organizing an event at this place or even a romantic date.
