I was passing through on a bicycle ride across the USA. Love the local places for breakfast. Very good meal!

Food was awesome and very reasonably price. Server was very nice and helpful. She went out of her way to ask the chef if bread pudding has raisins. Totally fine little diner but it really reminds me of Cosmos and Kissner's in how it seems to mostly exist solely for the upper-aged people who have visited there since childhood coming in for nostalgia purposes. I don't mean it as an insult or anything, it's just one of those places which are good to have in a community but not necessarily good for a new customer to check out. The food, much like Kissner's and Cosmos, tastes a lot like it's just Walmart frozen stuff cooked up real fast in the back (especially the burgers) and almost all the food is kind of bland. It's not bad, it's just not anything good either, but for the price it's still an overall good experience mostly thanks to the very kind and upbeat staff as well as the good price value. With so many reviews mentioning the pies here, I'll have to make sure to come by for that at some point. Maybe that's what sets it apart from just another old diner; I'd love to find out that's the case and update my review! read more

I have eaten at Bud's since I was a child. Every time I have been there I appreciate that the ladies always have a smile on their face and are so nice. Greeted when you walk in the door. The bathrooms and the restaurant itself is always clean. I stopped by here based on Yelp reviews and I am a sucker for good pie, which is something that everyone seems to be praising them for. So I went with what is probably their bread and butter - the hamburger basket and a slice of pie. So if I am being honest, the cheeseburger and fries were OK. Nothing to write home about. Pricing was fair for what you received. But nothing special. I ordered a slice of banana pie. It was a generous slice of pie with about an inch and a half of merengue on top of the pie. Crust was incredible, merengue was incredible, the pie was incredible! The restaurant itself is very homey, maybe dated, but it works. My only complaint was the bar stools at the diner were a little unpleasant to sit on. The padding is pretty worn out and you definitely feel it sitting there for a while. Lots of specials on their boards so check those out as well! I was super tempted to order the chicken and noodles over mashed potatoes. Maybe next time! read more

I grew up in Defiance. I used to work at Villa Shoes and would sometimes get lunch at Bud's. This past week a coworker and myself were working in Chicago and had to finish up in Akron OH. We had some extra equipment with us that waits at our first site and we ship it back from the last site. My coworker asked if I wanted to fly from Chicago to Cleveland (with 2 boxes of extra equipment along with our luggage and tools) or drive it? I said let's drive it, and we can detour through Defiance and have lunch with my family that is still in the area. We met at a different restaurant for Mexican food but per my sister's suggestion we had to get pie from Bud's. We stopped in and I had to get a slice of butterscotch pie as soon as I saw it on the menu. Other than mom making it, I never see it as an option in restaurants at home in S Carolina or in my work travels. My coworker was trying to decide and he wanted raspberry but the nice young lady behind the counter said they were out. One other person said a fresh one was ready so he was able to get the raspberry pie. Not sure what happened but we somehow got 2 raspberry slices and a butterscotch to go. At first I said something about the extra slice but my coworker said we'd take all 3. Well, we drove on to Akron, installed the equipment and then later that night we got to our hotel rooms. Knowing I would be in Defiance again before my coworker l let him have the extra slice of raspberry. I got to my room and the first thing I did was eat my slice of butterscotch pie. And immediately wished I had a second one! The next morning I asked my coworker how was the raspberry pie? He said it was absolutely amazing! He said his plan was to eat one and have the other in the morning but he ate both that night! Then he went to the gym at the hotel to work it off. On my next trip to Defiance (if driving) I am getting a whole butterscotch pie!!! If flying then I will figure something out. Amazing pies for sure!!! read more

On a whim, decided to drive from Toledo to defiance. Found this little gem of a diner and was pleasantly surprised at the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food. Excellent all around. I'm a local. The low down on Bud's is the pie. You come for pie and a cup of good old plain coffee. Each day of the week they have a certain pie featured that they have in addition to about a dozen other kinds. There is usually a nice combination of cream pies and fruit pies. Thursday is my favorite as they have old-fashioned brown sugar butterscotch. One day is peanut butter. I think it's Tuesday . Every kind of pie they have is delicious and made fresh daily in their kitchen. They make their own crust too. As far as their food, it is plain old americana. It's nothing fancy but it's pretty solid. They have daily specials like meatloaf and mashed potatoes or a open faced beef Manhattan. Again they make their mashed potatoes from potatoes not a box. If you like liver and onions and nobody in your house does go to Bud's and get them for less than seven dollars for your traditional meal that you'd expect. They also make their soups from scratch daily. (See a pattern?) It's not a very big restaurant and sometimes parking isn't always the best but it's worth adventure to get there. Breakfast is cheap and it's also very good. For a treat you might try a grilled cinnamon roll. Nothing has really changed here for 40 years and that's the way that people like it. read more

First time at Bud's. Cute, clean diner you might find in any small town. Server was very friendly and made sure I checked out the Specials on the whiteboard. Ordered their soup & 1/2 tuna salad sandwich. Soup was Rivil soup, which was a thick concoction consisting of small pasta beads and chicken. Think couscous or grits, only consistency was thinner. Half sandwich came on a stark white plate on white bread with no garnish. It looked so pitiful and lonely. I had to request a piece of lettuce. Don't get me wrong. The food was good and the small portions left plenty of room for pie. I ordered the blueberry crumb. It was delicious. I would go back, but probably try one of their burgers next time and another piece of pie. Service was very fast. read more

We came here for lunch on a Saturday. Service was quick and friendly, food came out promptly. I wouldn't say the food was excellent, but it was good. My kids liked their burger and hot dog. I opted for the ham and cheese. It was decent, the menu didn't have a description and I should've asked. The 'cheese' was 'American' and the bread was white. What is this, the grade school cafeteria? I would've preferred wheat bread and cheddar or Swiss. Fries were ok, I'm honestly not much of a fry eater and should've picked something else. They had pies that seemed to be selling pretty well. Overall it was good and around $25 for a family of 4. Would try again if we were in the area. Oh-and the restroom was super clean! read more

Had breakfast this morning. Wife and I both had biscuits and gravy and split a grilled cinnamon bun. After so much mediocre sausage gravy these days it was a welcomed surprise to get a real tasty sausage gravy made 'in house'. I used to say the only good sausage gravy was made south of the Mason-Dixon Line but I can't say that anymore. The cinnamon bun was excellent. The cost was not excessive and the lady who waited on us was a gem. I can't think of a thing I'd change except maybe having them open another diner in my hometown so I could go there more often. read more

The food was great and the fresh raspberry pie was to die for! I would have purchased multiple pies if we weren't on the motorcycle headed home to Chicago.
