Not fresh, just terrible food and extremely overpriced. Everything is pre-cooked and kept warm in heated trays. For how long, who knows? Portions are tiny (think salad served on a teacup saucer), and they clearly cut corners on ingredients. Most dishes are bulked up with cheap fillers like rice, with barely any meat or vegetables. The names of the dishes have nothing to do with what is actually served. The food looks nothing like what you would get at any other restaurant. At best, it resembles something you might have been served in a Communist-era Budapest factory canteen in the 1980s. Owner does not take criticism well, I think she is tired and just gave up. Wake up: you will never bring the business back by cutting cost on ingredients and by serving lazy pre-cooked food. There is a market for good Hungarian food but you are just giving it a bad reputation, a disgrace. read more

We happened upon this place and are so glad we did! It's a nice little family place with a few food and offerings each day - but you also can do a request. The owner is a lovely lady who makes delicious food! I had a chicken dish with potatoes and the cucumber salad, my husband had the fruit soup (holy cow was that tasty and surprising) then noodles and a sausage type dish. We split a piece of the chocolate cake for dessert. The food was in perfect portions, made from scratch, and tasty. European food is pretty tough to come by, especially German-Hungarian, which is what this place specializes in. And that's what piqued my interest as I visited this place. The staff are very friendly - even if you've never been there before, they treat you like a long time friend - a welcome way to break the monotony of the daily grind! The waitress serving me was very thorough in explaining how the menu worked - and there was quite a lot that caught my eye, from the salads to the entree choices. Ultimately, since it was chilly, I opted for soup - a kind of pea or lentil soup, and it was pretty good. For my entree, I ordered the fish schnitzel with rice. It wasn't bad, but it seemed a bit like just regular fried fish like you'd get at a fish-and-chips place. Nothing I'd write home about, and probably not something I'd pay $22 for. Overall, I'd recommend this place if you're looking to try something different. They have a rotating menu, and there's definitely more I'd like to try out like the Hunter's Chicken and the cabbage rolls, as well as the pasta, potatoes, and salads. Stay for a quick chat with the owners or some espresso, and maybe even visit the little market-like shelves they have - I got myself a rather expensive box of chocolates - though to be fair they were filled with brandy! read more

We came here for a late lunch (~1PM) on Saturday. Only two tables were occupied. All three lunch sets were the same price - $12.99, containing an entree, a soup/salad and a carbs option. I ordered the chicken paprikas lunch set with goulash soup and garden salad (subbed the carbs with the salad). My friend ordered the cabbage roll with goulash soup and spatzle. Usually chicken paprikas is marinated chicken thigh with spatzle but here they listed the chicken and spatzle separately. The food was delicious. Both the goulash soup and the chicken paprikas had authentic flavors, but I wish they used a bigger piece of chicken thigh. The desserts we ordered were okay - too sweet for me. My friend found a piece of mold in the chocolate dessert we had (he tasted it first then spotted it). Elizabeth (the owner) offered us a free item at the same price of the dessert. Elizabeth was very gracious & I had a bowl of delicious soup while waiting for my entree which was Hunter's Lunch. It comes with a variety of sides & I picked noodles which turned out to be Spaetzle which I adore. Cafe is quite quaint with a map of Hungary so you could see where she came from...Debreken. I've been really craving this type of real home cooked meal but don't have the skills or knowledge to pull it off. The owner is very helpful and offered us tastes of dishes we weren't familiar with. Last night we ordered the sauerkraut stew w German potato salad and beef goulash with spatzle. Today I came back for the cabbage rolls and they were so good I took an order to go for my daughter. Unfortunately, this will be an "I'll never know" experience. Understanding that dine-in options are limited, I worked to make a reservation. It was explained that they take reservations only one day in advance. Once confirmed, we showed up to an open yet empty restaurant who explained that they could only provide take out with a very limited selection. "Come back tomorrow," she said, "and you can eat in then " If a patron has done all the required preparation for dining, a phone call saying they can no longer accept would have been best form. I don't have much experience eating Hungarian cuisine but from what I have gathered is German style food with a dash of paprika! Small little family restaurant that has been around for quite a while, 10+ years for sure, located in a small strip mall in Mukilteo. When you walk in you feel the grannies kitchen ambience, the chef is the owner and operator with one lady as the server. My mother and I LOVED the food, the atmosphere, the service, EVERYTHING! How fortunate we were to find this hidden gem. We can't wait to go back because we wanted to try it all but our stomachs could not take the one meal we ordered each. I couldn't believe it when I saw an ethnic German/Hungarian restaurant in Lynnwood...I mean, I don't consider this area very "ethnic," if you know what I mean. Nevertheless, I knew I had to try this place...and I've become a regular! It looks like you've stepped into grandma's house. Everything from the knick knack decorations, to the owner sitting behind the cash register on a stool, everything screamed comfort and comfort food. And that's just what you get. The menu changes daily, but every entree comes with a choice of salad or soup and a side (usually spaetzle, rice, or potatoes). I'm a huge fan of the cucumber salad (cucumber slices in vinegar with paprika), beef stroganoff, and lecho (a jambalaya-esque rice dish with spicy sausage, peppers, paprika, and onions). I always go with the spaetzle, because, hello, they actually serve it, and it's amazing! Be sure to save room for dessert, or at a minimum, take it to go! They have the most amazing and tastycakes sweets here. Favorite? Cream puff! They also import German/Hungarian candies, sweets, and ingredients, so be sure to take a look. FYI - this place is closed Mondays! Keep that in mind when you plan a visit. For some reason, I always crave this place on Mondays and go womp womp when I realize it's closed. read more

I first went to Budapest Bistro some years ago when a friend suggested we go there for lunch. I have been back a number of times with other friends, and we've always enjoyed it. The serve to sort of comfort food you find from Germany to Russia with only the name and the seasoning ratios varying. It's very much like many small European cafes. It's a small operation, the owner who cooks and handles the money, and a server. If the owner takes I'll, they don't open. The menu is always very small and written on a chalk board. There will usually be a choice of a couple of soups and a couple of salads for a starter. You'll have a choice of three entrees, if they haven't run out of one yet. A choice of three starches on the side, and all plates get mixed vegetables. Desert is extra, and most are made in house. It is it's one thing. It's not your normal American restaurant, and that's part of its charm read more

I'm a fan of trying new restaurants. I read about this place on Yelp and figured we'd try it when I received a gift certificate/coupon ($25.00 off a minimum $35.00 bill). I called them and was told that they closed at 9 p.m. but she'd be there until 10 p.m. so please, come down. I checked the clock and we decided to go. We arrived about 30 minutes to close and there was another group finishing up their meal. The friendly lady told us to choose any table so we selected one. She explained each of their drink selections and which items were available from her menu. We selected two beers that we'd not sampled before and two of the three dishes available. When she brought our small cabbage salads, she asked us where we learned of her restaurant and I told her (restaurant [dot] com). She smiled and was pleased. The meal came to the table quickly. Our food was ladled onto plates from the glassed in steam table and reheated in a microwave in the back. My best friend didn't care for her meat dish, it was soggy from the reheating. The vegetables were overcooked and the rice was waterlogged. My beef goulash was oily but tasty. (Photographs provided) You might ask yourself why we didn't say anything to our server/cook. There were several factors at play: 1. We were quite hungry when we arrived. It was like when you eat quickly and then midway through your meal, you realise that it's the hunger informing your opinion of the food quality. 2. We were the last table of the evening and since I called, I didn't want to complain. 3. We didn't want to make a fuss since we'd be getting such a discount on the meal. If the food wasn't great, we'd chalk it up to a lesson learned and not return. 4. She was so pleasant that we didn't want to insult her. I finished my meal and my best friend ate most of hers. We were offered dessert and decided to try some since they looked fresh + beautiful in the case. We also had a minimum bill to reach so we selected a layered walnut cake with cream and a custard cake. Those were spectacular and made from scratch by the server. (Photographs provided) We finished our desserts. Their sweetness quickly washed the memory of the mediocre meal away. She asked us how we liked them and we extolled the virtues of her baking skills. They were seriously amazing. Since we were finished, we decided to leave. I handed her my certificate with my credit card. She took a look at the certificate and all of her pleasantries faded fast. She flatly told me that she couldn't accept it. I shook my head, not understanding what she said. She reiterated again that she couldn't accept it. I asked her why not and she explained that she accepted the $10.00 ones but not the $25.00 ones. I asked her if we met the minimum and she began to tabulate our bill to see. I offered that we could buy some desserts to go if we hadn't but we hit the $40.00 mark easily. She peered over her glasses and the certificate. Under her breath, she said that it didn't look real. I pointedly told her that I didn't use colour printing for them. I assured her it was original and easily to verify. She sternly told us that the next time we came, to bring the smaller certificate not the larger one which she didn't accept. She said that she just couldn't make it. There was no mention of restrictions on the certificate nor the website. While she was amending the bill, I changed my mind about the method of payment. I chose to pay with cash instead of my card so there would be no record of my visit, save the certificate. I was embarrassed at her callousness and just wanted to leave. I returned home and double checked the certificate online. There wasn't any restrictions nor was I supposed to show the certificate beforehand. I understand that economic times are hard for everyone... but don't enroll in the programme if you can't honour the certificates. It's not fair to the consumer nor does it engender any loyalty when you scold them. All her goodwill left when she saw that certificate which soured me on the entire dining experience. Despite her treatment at the register, I left a 20% tip on my original total. I'm not unsympathetic to her plight as a business owner during these economic times but she didn't have to be as unpleasant as she was about it. read more

Living in south Snohomish County, it turns out, means eating really well. You don't eat very well if you look for typical mainstream American food in the busy parts of town. But there's so much good food from other culinary traditions scattered throughout hidden spots that you can never really run out of good stuff as long as you're willing to try new things. Budapest Bistro is apparently the only Hungarian place for miles and miles and miles in any direction, and it's certainly the first I have tried. The food is pretty spectacular, and very well-priced. First, let's address the things that could be seen as drawbacks here. It's a ways from town, so, if you're coming up from Seattle, you'll be on the freeway for a minute. It's all freeway, though (I-5 and 525): you're going 60 pretty much until you hit the turn lane to get in here. But you get here and there's plenty of free parking, since it's a suburban development. Inside, unfortunately, the place is lit like a cafeteria, with institutional fluorescent tubes mounted in an acoustic tile subceiling. This place was a Hungarian deli before it was a Hungarian restaurant, but they kept the deli case and deli lighting, so, brace yourself for a so-so first impression through the window. Inside, though, it's a fun and welcoming spot. The service is quick and friendly, and actually really funny. The owner and her husband crack a lot of jokes, which just seem all the funnier for being told in heavy Hungarian accents. Their front of house staff are charming and know the menu well--they factor in a lot of advice for less-adventurous American diners, but they still encourage you to try new things and explain why these unfamiliar dishes are good. Each day's menu is written on a little whiteboard across the room, which they read to you like a specials list. There were two soups, two salads, and five entrees when we came in. Last night, they had been slammed all day. In our effort to let everybody at the table try as many different things as they wanted, we cleaned them out of the last helpings of a couple things and they had to erase part of the board after the five of us ordered. We had the chicken paprikash, hunter's chicken, house-pulled sausage, schnitzel, and a couple other things that escape me now. You have your choice of pasta, rice, or spaetzle next to whichever entree you order, and you also have your choice of a soup or a salad. Each dish is seasoned with great balance and character. At times for me, fooling around with eastern european recipes in my own kitchen means overdoing it with the paprika or some other seasoning I want to emphasize, just because I like explosive flavors and can be a goof. But the way the owner cooks everything here is like your grandmother would make to put you at ease after a long day's work outside, or for a special occasion. It's just that your grandma, here, has access to a completely different spice rack. The sausage was particularly interesting, densely packed and richly flavored. They brought out squeeze bottle mustard for it, which was a little bit of a drag even though it tasted good. But, again, you feel like you're at a picnic table in grandma's yard. It would just be neat to see them make their own mustard and give the place that one additional touch of scratch-made Hungarian love food. The sauerkraut soup was fantastic, and none of us had ever even heard of such a thing before we sat down. The schnitzel was wonderfully crispy with great flavor, and the chicken paprikash was beautifully juicy and showed a combination of seasonings you just don't see elsewhere. The desserts are all house-made, and everything we tried was good. We focused on cakes and then some mazurka-like concoctions whose names escape me now. The dessert case also holds a few dozen Belgian and eastern european beers, and the whiteboard boasted of hot spiced wine, which we didn't try. We had multiple split plates, five entrees, five desserts, and six beers for $180--$36 a plate for enough good food to beach a baleen whale. I have been going here since they first opened (I don't remember exactly when that was), but my family and I were so excited to have a Hungarian restaurant practically in our backyard, as we are of Hungarian descent. My father's side of the family is Hungarian and I grew up eating Hungarian food from family recipes. The restaurant is owned by Elisabeth and her husband. As the name implies, the bistro is small and has the feel of a deli. It may look unassuming, but the food is authentic Hungarian that is delicious, fresh, and filling. Elisabeth and her husband hand make all the food and desserts. I think I've only ever seen one other worker in the place besides the owners. Their pastries are scrumptious! Having gone here for a few years now, I know and understand how Elisabeth is. As the other reviews point out, she can be difficult, and at our house, we actually argue over who's going to pick up the food if we have a coupon! However, since we are regulars and she knows us, she is not as bad anymore. She actually gives us back our coupons to use for the next time. I think the business is struggling financially and that's why she reacts poorly when people bring big ticket coupons. I know that's no excuse, but the food is so good and it is such a rarity to find a Hungarian restaurant, I have overlooked her odd behavior. Besides, I try to support local businesses and I would be devastated if this one closed. My recommendation is the chicken paprikash with spaetzle... and one of the delicious pastry desserts. Besides the food, they have imported German, Hungarian, Czech, and other beer and wines, candies, and different staples from overseas. They also sell imported sausages along with packaged sausage that they make themselves in house. In my opinion, this restaurant is a Must Try, at least once! Being Hungarian myself, I have no qualms about recommending this place as a good representation of the food. =) read more

Small hole in the wall place located inside a strip mall. I'm from out of town, but the people who I was staying with 5 minutes away had never heard of it. Inside has some cool Original decorations. Not many seats, wouldn't have mattered I was the only one there. No menus, kind of odd but they serve something different everyday. Small selection of beers on hand, none of which I'd ever heard of before. Ordered pan cooker sausage with red cabbage and potatoes. Portions weren't big as I ended up ordering a second sausage. But the sausage was so tasty. Perfect crispy outside. Red cabbage was an amazing pairing. Forgot what the potatoes were seasoned with, but also good. Topped it off with a Porter Beer. Went here with my girlfriends a few days ago. We were the only customers who came in during lunchtime. The interior is really unique and cool to look at. It gave a very homely feel. I never really had Eastern European food before, so it was an interesting taste! The server was super sweet and enthusiastic. She was more than happy to explain what each menu item was and made accommodations for us since we had to leave early, so unfortunately we couldn't dine in for long.
