(Living with Covid series) A dive buddy invited me along to Kauai to dive, and the dive shop we were going to use was Bubbles Below. BB is a small business run by Clay (also boat driver) and Blondie (in the shop & bookings). The shop is located in Eleele, and the boat is based not 200 yards down the road at Port Allen Small Boat Harbor, both nearby Hanapepe. 3 days of diving would be too much in narrative format, so here are my impressions: Day 1. We started with 2 boat dives on Kauai's South shore to dive sites named Turtle Bluffs and Hale o Honu (House of turtles). Not too deep dives (60-70 feet max). We didn't see any pelagic sea life, but I'm content with the honu and things I haven't seen before. This time, it was the Hawaiian lionfish or turkeyfish (probably for the turkey-like plume of spikes it displays). They're an indigenous lionfish in Hawaiian waters, not the Indonesian lionfish that is such a pest in Florida, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean. As Hale o Honu suggests, this dive site was full of honu, all waiting their turn at the cleaning station (where small fish come out and eat the algae off their shells) Although I've been to a lot of honu cleaning stations before, this one had over 8 honu, a record for me! Day 2. A trip to dive Niihau was the highlight of the trip. 3 dives with enriched air ("Nitrox") off of Niihau. It was two very long boat rides, about 2 hours each. The afternoon return boat ride was very choppy, with several people getting sick. And Cap'n Clay said it was pretty calm, relatively speaking. But it was worth it! Excellent visibility, interesting underwater structures, and fascinating critters! The cherry on everything was the Hawaiian monk seals. It is said that Niihau has the largest Hawaiian monk seal population in the inhabited Hawaiian islands. We only saw two, but one came by the dive group. The seal came up close to one of the divers, and played with her bubbles from the back. The diver never even noticed! Day 3. These were two scheduled dives along the Na Pali coast. The first was called the Mana Crack. It's a section of the reef that developed a fissure on the floor. Stretching several miles, Mana Crack had a lot of interesting underwater structures. The dive guide found a couple of my favorite nudibranchs, the gold lace. We then headed up to the northwestern section of Na Pali for dive two, but inclement weather came in. We ended up back at Mana Crack. Second dive wasn't as interesting as the first, but it was alright. In summary, Bubbles Below is an excellent dive shop. Great people, fair prices, and some of the best underwater scenery in Hawaii! The snacks and sandwiches provided for the all day dives were tasty and a cut above the slightly stale warehouse club chips and cookies usually available on other dive boats. Definitely will repeat and recommend!

    Great view!

Great experience! I went on the dive as a swimmer/snorkeler while my bro and sis in law dove. Clay and team were awesome and made sure everyone was safe and had a great time! Blonde is awesome too!! Swimming with spinner dolphins was epic.

Bubble Below gave us an amazing scuba diving experience. From Blondy in the office to Captain Clay and Divemaster Jake on the ocean, everything was top notch. They focus on safety, being good to the environment and having fun. As new divers we felt super comfortable and would absolutely dive with them again. They took us to an excellent spot where we saw pretty much everything under the sun, it was amazing! Mahalo Bubbles Below!

I have been diving with Bubbles for many years. Even before the current owners who have run it for quite a number of years now. I dove with this crew yesterday and the gear was brand new. Attention to detail. Humor. Knowledge of the territory and the wildlife. I went out with a different company a week ago just to fit another dive in. The difference is remarkable. With unnamed company the boots were worn through. I soon learned why as the fins proceeded to wear holes in my hide and now I get to deal with that throughout my vacation. Trust me... Clay and Blondie at Bubbles are the real deal Kind, and yet serious about safety. Go with them.

Everything you would want from a dive shop. Safety, knowledge, and fun. Blondy, Clay, Manny, and Tom are all great fun and great personalities. DMs with expert eyes both above and below water.. we took a few whale detours and Manny was spotting Honu silhouettes from 20ft away in mildly cloudy viz, not to mention all the rarer smaller critters. Looking forward to diving with them again when we eventually come back for Ni'ihau.

Bubbles below was a great Dive Team to get certified with. My family including 11 y/o daughter got PADI open water certified. Jake was amazing, super patient and very helpful. Clay, Matt and Tim great on the boat. Blondie was great to work with to book our trip and all the logistics/paperwork. The dive sites were amazing and saw sharks, turtles including a Hawksbill, eels, Eagle Ray, barracuda, and to s of fish including frog and lion fish. We saw a few Dolphin and whales as well. Very relaxed and fun group. I'd highly recommend taking classes or strip with this Dive Team.

    Happy Dive Team!
    Keith H.

Bubbles Below runs a class act from the moment you book until you leave the boat. Blondie is very colorful and has a sparkly personality at the office. Clay is not only a great Captain, but he is funny and keeps a careful eye on the customers and crew. Dive master Jack was extremely educated on all the sea life and was fun to dive with. My wife Summer and I couldn't have been more happy with our two tank dives and the service. Thank you Bubbles Below! Keith and Summer Haviland

Rock formations and fish near Ni'ihau

We dove with Clay in September 2022, and I highly recommend the company. We did three different dive sites, two near Kauai, and one off Ni'ihau. Clay and his crew were professional, courteous, and effective. The gear they provided was in good shape. Divemasters Jake and Mercedes were very good guides too, taking the time shepherd the group and show us the wildlife. The two local dives were pleasant, getting us back to diving condition after several years. The Ni'ihau dive was extraordinary, and well worth the premium; we saw a couple monk seals, sharks, and the dive sites had very interesting geography, formations and arches, plus all the critters you'd expect. However, the boat ride back to Kauai from Ni'ihau was very unpleasant, with a strong headwind making the sea quite agitated; one diver had to get a strong dose of medicine to knock them asleep, and I had to keep my eye fixed on the horizon to keep my stomach in place. All the bumping up and down, for three hours, gave me a strong headache. I wish Clay wins the lottery, so he can get a catamaran. Or, partner with the snorkeler company that used a catamaran to get to Ni'ihau. All this said, I do recommend people do the Ni'ihau dive, at least once.

Captain Kai was competent, informative, and very funny, as was crewmember Vayden, and Collin's mai tais are not to be missed. The food onboard was delicious and included traditional Hawaiian pulled pork and teriyaki chicken. Scrumptious cookies and bubbly rounded out the evening. Some things to be aware of: This cruise is on a catamaran; some of our party were expecting a small cruise ship that would have been a smoother ride. Waves are bumpy, and the windier parts of the trip resembled a mild roller coaster--if that's not your thing or you know you can experience some motion sickness, please factor that into your decision to book a trip. That being said, one person in our party experienced some light motion sickness and was really well cared for by the crew. We really appreciated their kindness and support. If you have sturdy sea legs and an adventurous spirit, I'd highly recommend this excursion. The views of Kauai from the ocean are worth it alone, but the information from the captain and crew about the island and its culture are also super valuable. The whole experience also felt very safe; the cruise will not go to areas with high wind/surf, and on our trip the captain explained why he was turning out of the wind/waves when he made that decision.

We saw multiple breaches, tail slaps, fluke dives, and surface activity--the whales were active the entire time. The crew positioned the boat so well that we were able to stay in one great viewing spot and still see everything without moving around. The crew was incredibly attentive without being overbearing. Drinks and snacks were always taken care of--Mai Tais, coconut cookies, and snacks kept coming--and it genuinely felt effortless to just relax and enjoy the experience. The team was knowledgeable, calm, and respectful of the whales, offering helpful context without over-talking. The boat was comfortable, well run, and the two-hour length felt just right. If whale watching is on your list in Kauaʻi, Blue Dolphin is an easy recommendation

IMPORTANT NOTE: we all ended up getting sea sick (there was 5 of us), but this was not the fault of the crew at all--we learned we are all just prone to sea sickness. Especially as you near the Napali coast, it is very bumpy. Note that you will be on the boat for around 5 hours--if you are prone to motion sickness at all, we would not recommend this. It inevitably gets bumpy and for five hours, it is a lot to handle for anyone who is not an experienced with boats/sailing. ***Also note: this is not mainly a snorkeling excursion. We signed up thinking the focus would be snorkeling, but we went to a sub-par snorkeling spot (barely saw any fish) for around 45 minutes than were back on the boat for the rest of the time. This excursion is mainly about being on the boat and seeing the Napali Coast, which is very beautiful. However, overall, if you are looking for a snorkeling outing or are prone to seasickness, I would pass on this. You can see the Napali via helicopter, which may be the better option. The ride is so bumpy near the coast that it is hard to enjoy the beauty. This outing is quite expensive so we just want people to be aware of the drawbacks ahead of booking. Again, Capt Andy's is WONDERFUL and were so kind and entertaining the whole day, it is just quite a long time to be on the boat if you're not accustomed to it. If you're looking for a boating excursion, want to see the Napali Coast by boat, and don't get sea sick at all, Capt Andy's is the way to go.

Then another, an hour before our departure. AND THE BOAT RIDE WAS GREAT. I was all smiles and adventure and breathing -in the ocean air and wind! Unlike, a few folks, who were NOT doing so well. (One or two barfed over the side, but thankfully I didn't notice. Know how your body handles boats and waves. Don't do tours like this, without proper prep. It will NOT be fun if you underestimate it.) Check-In staff was super friendly, and personal. They remembered me from my original email. Sweet. Parking was easy. Shuttles team was super friendly. The strangers we rode with, all turned out to be cool. 2 boats go out (mini-catamarans, with cover from the sun). They expertly traverse the waves, and cliffs, and the caves, giving you some amazing first-hand visuals and photos. But yeah, that boat will be a rockin', during those up-close cave moments. Spoiler: You probably won't see whales, unless you're there before May. But we DID see a cute pod of Dolphins, who cozy'd up to our boat for a while. Our boat had Casey and Spencer. They were wise beyond their years, in all things Kauai. Funny and friendly. Spencer navigated the heck out of those waves, while Casey handled the nauseous passengers with MOTHERLY CARE.
