My personal favorites are the chicken or beef plate, which is juicy and tender, and the mezze plate, which is filled with mouthwatering bites. Based on taste, would have given 5 stars. We ordered the Beef kebab pita which was very nice. We also shared the mezzanine plate which was mostly good. What bothered me was that we had a coupon for a free side of Falafel following attending the owner's book signing, however even though the coupon had no expiration date and we met all the conditions, after 15 minutes of waiting for this to be clarified, the coupon was refused because the Chef was in a meeting and was unable to approve it. I'd been looking for a reason to try Bubbelah -- Jewish deli near my home -- and had an excuse when 20 relatives from across the country ended up at my house for a birthday party I was hosting. With a broad range of food preferences among guests and the birthday girl, I settled on a falafel/Israeli salad theme. Who doesn't like Mediterranean food? My husband found a few local restaurants that could provide the dishes we needed, but I lobbied for Bubbelah. He ordered $300 worth of falafel and salad. I realize that running a restaurant, especially in a high rent area, is expensive, but I was shocked when he walked in the door with two small containers of food that, suffice to say, didn't last too long. If I hadn't made a trip to Costco and loaded up on appropriate items -- including hummus, dolmas, and pita -- we would have had a sad-looking buffet. (Costco cost $150 for a lot of stuff, and the quality was comparable to that of Bubbelah. Sorry.) I would like Bubbelah to succeed, and don't mind paying for quality, but no one wants to feel ripped off, and we did. read more

We were really looking forward to try this place and we schlepp all the way from SF The first disappointment was the ambience. No character, no service, empty shelves, it felt quite weird. Second disappointment: almost no Jewish food. Yes. Some was Israeli but a one Matzo ball soup on the menu doesn't qualify you as a Jewish eatery. Third, the prices. Mamma Mia! Restaurante prices for a fast food model. Not great. Some upsells are ridiculous: $2 for a plain pita and $4 for one falafel Also, it was very off putting having to pay for sauces $1 for tahina or shrug or amba. Never saw this before. And lastly, the food itself. Underwhelming. Flavors are not there. Either bland like the Israeli salad / rice / hummus or extremely seasoned like the grilled chicken or strange aftertaste like the barley mushroom soup. 3 stars Because we want to support David and the khachapuri was yummy. There's a new Jewish deli in Menlo Park, so you knew I would be there! The style is cuteeee! Blue Mediterranean theme and bright colors, French-style cafe tables. Deli counter and prepared foods to go, cookbooks, baked goods, dry goods, arranged attractively on shelves. You order via iPad, convenient and streamlined. I tried a few things. Beef shish kabob was excellent -- juicy and well seasoned, grilled perfectly. This was a treat! I ordered the Hummus Bomba thinking it would have bamba in it, got confused lol. Bamba is peanut puffs, a popular Israeli snack. Bomba is a Calabrian chili garlic paste like you get at Trader Joe's. So Bomba Hummus bowl came with hummus, a scoop of Calabrian chili garlic paste, crisped chick peas, Persian cucumber and preserved lemon. It was ok but the crisped chickpeas were too hard and dry. As for chicken soup, this is a delicate topic, given the deep emotions that come with it, of memory, childhood, culture. I think I ordered the wrong soup -- I got the meaty matzo ball soup. It smelled like classic chicken soup but had a lemony taste I didn't care for. This soup was chunky with shredded chicken and veggies, but I prefer clear broth only. The matzo ball was good. This included everything from Ashkenazi, Sephardic, and Middle Eastern influences. We started with the Mezze Plate, a collection of cold dishes and appetizers including baba ghanoush, muhammara, labneh, matbucha (cooked tomatoes and peppers), and shredded carrot salad. The combination of flavors and textures was delicious from the creamy dips to the crunchy carrot salad, and everything went nicely with the round of fluffy pita on the side. Another highlight dish was the Che Fico Bomba Crispy Hummus, a plate of light, airy hummus topped with crispy chickpeas and a mildly spicy bomba chili pepper paste. The hummus wasn't as flavorful or creamy as I liked, but the toppings made for a creative fusion dish! The Meaty Matzo Ball Soup was a hearty, savory chicken soup with a large matzo ball in the center. Finally, the Falafel plate came with three soft, crispy, herbaceous falafels served with yellow rice, hummus, and Middle Eastern chopped salad (cucumbers, tomatoes, bell pepper, radish, red onion). I never usually do this, but I had to warn others of the disappointment. I understand with inflation and all prices have gone up, but it's an absolute insult to charge $25 for the driest meat I've ever had. I could make a comma about Service, but it is just simply doesn't exist. This food was the best thing I've eaten in the Palo Alto area. I have DoorDash it once and ordered it again today although I look forward to visiting in person soon. The mezze was pricey, but worth every bite. The chicken soup was phenomenal and had lots of fresh chopped vegetables in it with dill and big chunks of chicken without skin and bones, which is just how I like it. The beef platter was also amazing and I did pay extra to try each of the sauces and the green one was my favorite, but they were all tasty. I'm not writing this out of vindictiveness. I just think the owner should know why this was a terrible dining experience so they don't go belly up. It is a pleasant enough environment. Bright. Attractive. But it went downhill fast from there. Granted, I'm old school--willing to order from a computer, but not really a fan. The one employee on the floor kindly directed us to the restroom that my partner needed-- a good (meaning bad) distance from the restaurant, but I honestly thought he was a kindly patron not an employee. So when I had a question about the menu, I hesitated to ask him. He helped me briefly, but didn't stick around for any follow up questions and quickly ran back to his aloof perch and focussed on his laptop not the sole customer in the place. Ordering made reasonable sense after a brief review of the site. I was disappointed that every little sauce or pita (that one would expect to come automatically with mezze) was an upcharge, especially given the robust prices of the main items. In a nutshell, user interface was a zero. The food arrived. My server said "here's your chicken pita." I had ordered felafel, not chicken. Fortunately--I guess--he had misspoken as it was felafel. UNfortunately, it in no way resembled anything I've ever eaten in decades of eating felafel pitas. Not a terrible taste, but a pocket of unrecognizable mush far from what I had expected. My partner did not describe her dish--a take on middle eastern pizza--other than to say it was rather small for the price she paid. In summary, the name Bubbelah conjures up images of loving arms with warmth, affection, and nurturing. This place conveys none of that--overpriced, sterile environment, weird food. I hope for your sake, Bubbelah owner, you make some wholesale changes. The fact that not another customer showed up in the nearly two hours that my partner and I chatted may be an indication that the word is already out. Just horrible. You know, on second thought, I'm not even sure there were felafels in my pita at all. The meat was tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned, you could tell it had been marinated with care. The rice it came with was fragrant, fluffy, and a perfect complement to the kebab. A great restaurant with a uniquely interesting design that reminded me of a cozy bistro in Eastern Europe. Their falafel and appetizer platter were absolutely amazing!!! Not totally sold on the beef and chicken kebabs though just two small thin pieces and the beef was more of a kofta style rather than traditional cubes. The salad was just OK. This is a really nice Israeli restaurant with a blend of European and Middle Eastern influences--there's even a touch of Georgian flavor in the mix, which is unique and exciting. I tried the beef kebab in a pita, and it was absolutely delicious. The seasoning really reminded me of classic Israeli flavors, with a bit of spice that gave it a nice kick. The pita itself was a bit chewy, but considering they had just opened when I visited, I imagine they were still working out a few kinks. Hopefully by now, they've perfected it, because everything else was fantastic. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back and trying more from the menu! read more

Bubbelah is such a gem in the neighborhood! My husband ate there for lunch, and he was so excited about the food we came back for dinner. Everything was delicious and made with such care, and the staff was extraordinarily friendly and accommodating. I really appreciate having a restaurant that serves food that Jews from around the world (Europe and Arab countries), of all colors, call homey food. What is one supposed to do if someone in the party has allergies and would like to request accommodations? When I arrived at noon, the place was totally empty, and no one working there was visible, which seemed bizarre. The only desserts are gelato, which seems like a missed opportunity given the wide array of desserts available in the Jewish world. Chicken Lavash wrap - bland and fell apart in my husband's hand. Chicken soup - lots of shredded chicken to broth ratio. Clear broth -TOO MUCH DILL. Too spoonfuls and I was done. So disappointed. I had high hopes. Where do I begin? First the pros: The pita was fluffy. The halvah cookie was insanely good. The arayes was good. The cons The chicken breast was not a kabob. It was just a grilled chicken breast that may have been the most dry pieces of protein I've had in my life. Inedible. The white fish was so bland and boring. I didn't feel like I was eating israeli food. The chicken breast and white fish had no business being there. I was confused. If you're going to do israeli food do it right. Uninspired.
