Bubba's is a great place to get both pork BBQ and fried chicken. I recommend the platter with pork and fried chicken. Both were superb. The beans, yellow slaw and potato salad are very fresh as well. What I like are the people. The servers never let your glass get more than half empty. The Sweet tea is just sweet enough. The staff is extremely attentive. The place is clean. Cafeteria style Q. Bubba's Barbecue is a regular old barbecue joint that you can find all over our great 50 states. If I'm rating Bubba's against other Carolina Q joints that make an Eastern Carolina Q...Bubba's would get a zero. Eastern Q is made from a whole hog pit barbecue. You can tell immediately that a whole hog was not pit smoked for an extended amount of time. If you're looking for some pork with a vinegar sauce, Bubba's will be fine...and it does have a faint hint of smoke...but traditional Eastern Carolina Q? Not in my world. The sides and everything else is completely serviceable. I'd liken most of the food to a cafeteria style fare. I wish I loved this place. All of the people that work here and the owners are so awesome. If you're not serious about smokey Q...Bubba's might work for you. read more

On our driving travels, we didn't want the standard fast food or Denny's/IHOP meal and saw a sign for this place on the interstate. We pulled in and were seated immediately. Very friendly staff and quick service. We each had the BBQ pork sandwich, fries and slaw. The food was really good -- not the best BBQ I'd ever had -- but fast and convenient and just what we wanted to eat. The price was reasonable and the iced tea flowed freely. I spoke to the owner afterwards who was very welcoming and appreciated our business (very nice!) He said they mainly catered to their regular locals, so it was nice to see someone come in off the highway. A nice place to visit if you're in the area. Give them a try! read more

Whenever I am out of town for an extended trip I always try to find some local BBQ. A local recommended Bubba's, and I decided to give it a try. The location is nothing pretentious, just your basic hole in the wall BBQ joint. They do Eastern North Carolina Style BBQ (vinegar and pepper sauce), and they have a red tomato based sauce for chicken and ribs. I had a combo of chopped pork bbq and a bbq chicken breast quarter. The chicken was incredible, and the sauce, a little on the spicy side, complimented it very well. The BBQ was just a little dry and definitely needed sauce, and the vinegar sauce complimented it very well too. I also had slaw, baked beans, and a small bowl of Brunswick stew. I wish I had ordered something other than the slaw--I'm sure there are people who like vinegar based cumin seed full slaw, but I prefer mine mayonnaise based--just personal preference. The beans were exquisite, you could taste the molasses and brown sugar in every bite. The Brunswick stew was the most different I had ever seen. It had the consistency of a cross between white chicken chili and chicken and dumplins. It was quite good and included chicken, tomatoes, lima beans, and corn. Although it was different it was some of the best I've ever tasted. If I were a local I'd definitely be a regular. read more

Ordered carry out from here. They have a lot of funny signs, and a decent web presence, and the interior seems clean and well-kept. If you're in this rather unnapealing part of suburban CLT, you probably know every restaurant is a homogenized chain from Lake Norman until you get Downtown. I came here hoping to find something hand-crafted with local pride and local ownership. I bombed again. The ribs have good sauce but are so rubbery that they would bounce a country mile. They are NOT tender, fall-off-bone quality like good ribs imply. Their fried chicken strips may as well have come off a U.S. Foods or Sysco truck (like the frozen-tasting onion rings & hush puppies). The beans are on the good side of mediocre. And who in the world ever heard of mustard-based coleslaw? Save some money and go to BoJangles or Cook-Out, or hold off your hunger until you get to Huntersville, where dining out has character, true individuality, and proud local owners. read more

I come here often and get lunch togo. I love their BBQ sandwich and fries. The BBQ is always cooked perfectly. It's never full of grit or fat and it has just a hint of smokiness to it. They don't go crazy with the flavor or seasoning but that's how I believe proper cooked meat should be. The people who work the counter are friendly and efficient. Horrible! I happened to stop at Bubba's on my way back to SC one evening because I (wrongly) thought it would be better than stopping for fast food. The service was slow, unfriendly, and completely disinterested in helping anyone. Being from the South, I'm familiar with BBQ, and Eastern-style BBQ is my favorite. This was beyond disappointing. The ribs were coated in a tomato-based paste-like sauce and were not the tender pull apart ribs that you expect from a slow roast. The sides were bland and almost tasteless. I cannot believe that this is considered one of the best barbecue places in Charlotte! It has to be some of, if not THE worst barbecue I have ever had. read more

I advise you to not get the so called "homemade meatloaf" nothing homemade about it to me, seems like it came out of a can of some sort the way it was shaped and no ketchup on top of it. My husband got the ribs and says the meat is cheap with all that fat in it and you wouldn't believe they don't have RANCH and don't allow Ranch, my husband says to even eat them things he needs ranch. Very average. The owner came out and challenged my husband to take some childish "man or boy" test in the men's bathroom. Guy wouldn't stop talking to us. Food was mediocre. Will not go back simply because the owner wouldn't leave us alone to eat. He was very weird--asked personal questions that were none of his business. He came to our table to chat, and after seeing that my dad had been to the bathroom, he wouldn't stop talking about whether my dad had gone into the correct bathroom or not. I'm no barbeque expert but this food plain didn't taste good. Ribs were laced with so much fat I couldn't even bite through them. Hush puppies were the bright spot. They used to serve a kick ass sweet potato pie with soft serve but that's no longer on the menu. This place is soooooo goooooood. Bad reviews all make me laugh cuz it is the best bbq in the state!. I have been coming here for years, and due to the distance we travel it has only been a handful of times sadly. All servings are all hand made and you just gotta love it. 02/21/2015 Coming from Georgia on I85 N i see Bubbas Barbecue sign cause i past a sonnys bbq sign about 3 miles so get off about 1/4 mile there goes Bubbas,as i walk in waitress greeted me shows me to a seat i say kool wheres the rest room. i go in their and their is a urnil about 10 to 11 feet in air above normal size with sign pointed up saying men & down saying boys i laughed.I go backed to my seat sweet tea waiting for me waitress ask me what im having,order the combo ribs & chopped barbecue & fries with slaw hush puppies come with it.On table have two diffrent bbq sauces o e vinegar based which was good, ribs just like i like it not too soft succulent,chopped barbecue was good just by itself.Cole slaw was good it was mustard based never had like that hush puppies was good too waitress was very attentive and they made sure i left with a large sweet tea southern hospitality. :) Gave 4 stars because they only had ribs & chicken no brisket.Will go back. read more

I visited Charlotte for a conference in 2010, so my friends insisted that I try East Carolina BBQ while I was away. I went with my Grandma on our visit back in June (sorry for the delayed review, trying to remember as accurately as possible) and the all you can eat hush puppies to start the meal were amazing! I loved their sweet tea, but my Grandma said it was a little too sweet for her liking, so I'm guessing it's the difference in our taste buds. haha The BBQ was good, but I was hoping for more being that it was my first time to NC and I had heard all about the BBQ there. I had the pulled pork and it was a little on the dry side plus there wasn't anything special about the flavor. The sauce on the table helped with the dryness, but I was still hoping for a little more flavor than what I got. The "regular" portion is huge and I would have taken leftovers if I wasn't leaving the next morning. My Grandma got the petit portion and we probably could have shared it. read more

Bubba's Barbecue was the worst I have ever eaten. The pulled pork was flavorless (Sam's Club Frozen Pulled Pork is 10x Better), the hush puppies were dry and lastly, the cole slaw was horrible. It was mustard & dill pickle based and it tasted like they were going to make potato salad and ran out of potatoes and substitued finely chopped cabbage --- it was bad, really bad. Just awful in every single way. Came in around 7:30 and we were the only patrons in the entire place, which should have been a sign. Looked at the menu and ordered a BBQ plate for something like $10, which was EXTREMELY over priced. The bbq was dry and bland, the fries came from a freezer and were barely warm, and the veggies out of a can. Service was terrible, the girl seemed like we were a major inconvenience on her evening and only came to our table to take our order and drop off the food. I know she wasn't busy, how could she be?? The best (pig) ribs, anywhere. The best BBQ chicken, anywhere. The best vinegar sauce, anywhere... in fact, I buy it there in bottles and bring it home. The pulled pork is beyond comparison. The decor is hick-chic, which is entirely appropriate. Few servers last, there, as the owner is exacting and demanding - thus the service is usually perfect. I once had my meal a bit late, as my server took my order and got canned before my order was ready... but Robyn or Robin has been there for a dozen years or more. This place gets most of my restaurant dollars when I am in ... or anywhere near ... Charlotte. My kids have grown up in front of Ralph and Robin. I love this place. read more

I had read about Bubba's on this site. I stopped there on my way to SC from CT just before Christmas. Boy, was I disappointed. The pulled pork I had was dry, chopped too fine and virtually tasteless. I had to pour on their sauce to save it. The sauce was not very good either. I am a caterer in CT and bought a smoker in 2011. I already make better pulled pork than this and I am still improving. The hush puppies were very good and they give you plenty of tea plus a to-go cup full. If you want great pulled pork and other BBQ, go to Southern Soul in St. Simon's GA. My nephew, who lives on the island, ordered for the family at Christmas 2011. Great stuff! Tender, juicy and delicious with your choice of sauces on the side. When we first entered the restaurant we noticed it almost empty on a Saturday night. I took this as a bad sign and almost decided to leave, but I made the mistake of actually giving it chance. The menu was rather poor and didn't offer very good options. My wife and I ordered a Cheeseburger, my friend ordered BBQ Chicken. When the food came it didn't look very impresive at all. I could of got a better burger from McDonalds and the chilli tasted like the cheap canned food type. My friend's chicken had blood spilling out of it and he had to send it back to get recooked. Personally, we all felt very unsatisfied and dissapointed. The waitor was very poor and she didn't deserve the tip we gave her. I give Bubba's BQ a generous 1/2 a star and would not suggest anyone wasting their time and money there! As an advid consumer of BBQ, this place almost caused me to cease and desist eating BBQ forever! read more
