This review is based on the BRUG Bakery "Anniversary" event in July which features $2 pastries. BRUG is a German-influenced Japanese style bakery. The pastries that I prefer usually run $4+ at this bakery, so of course it's a must to attend this event! The turnout is bigger every year, so arrive early (more than 1 hour) prior to opening time to secure your spot in the LONG line. Bring your own bag(s) or be prepared to pay an extra fee to purchase theirs. In 2025, there was a maximum purchase of 12 pastries per person. Only a set amount of people can go into the establishment at one time, so it doesn't get too crazy. Once they're out, that's it for the day. Options, flavoring, and prices are elite, but why is every damn thing so oily now? Not even greasy. Every single bite comes with a pool of straight oil in your mouth. Don't matter if it's a sweet or savory pastry. I don't like that. I'm seeing other reviews reflect the same experience, but I dont remember it always being like this for every pastry. In the Bay Area, we have Sheng Kee. In Oahu, they have BRUG. Brug Bakery is a cozy bakery spot that nails both quality and comfort. My family and I visited early in the morning, and it was quiet with no lines. It felt nice being able to take our time picking out the different pieces of bread we wanted. FOOD: 9/10 SERVICE: 10/10 AMBIANCE: 8/10 Favorites: Garlic and Cheese Sausage Roll FOOD: 9/10 The bakery strikes the perfect balance between indulgence and skillful baking. Every pastry tastes fresh, with textures that are crispy, flaky, and full of flavor. The Garlic and Cheese Sausage Roll is a must-try for a savory bite. The sausage is juicy and pairs perfectly with the soft, doughy bun. We also tried their Ube Mochi Ball, which was spot-on, sweet but not overpowering. SERVICE: 10/10 Staff are SO genuinely friendly and attentive. They were so fun to talk to and get to know. We got to learn a lot about BRUG, and it was funny being able to compare the different bread bakeries that Oahu and the Bay Area have, sharing what each of us knows. Just like Japan. I first experience this type of pastry pick up in Yokosuka and I made sure every time I was in Japan or Okinawa to try their version of delicious baked goods. On Oahu, we use to have the shirokya market where I would get the delicacy but they have since closed. Where am I left but here. Lucky they expanded and have a couple more outlets. So now I'm able to enjoy a taste of Japan's baked goods at BRUG. The selection is good and everything is individual wrapped. Prices are labeled and some baked items have a description or what province they originated from. They do sell drinks to go with your item of choice. Either donuts, pizza, hot dogs in wrap around bread, or muffins. Overall four stars. The breads are soft and baked everyday. So pick up early because once they run out, they are done for the day. read more

I'm addicted to the coffee jelly (I get mine with half and half). It sells out quickly, so I don't always see it when I go. But this time they had a whole row! The line was long, so I couldn't resist grabbing a pastry while waiting to buy my coffee. The strawberry coated croissant muffin or whatever it was I got was so delicious! Brug has several locations in the larger malls on Oahu. It's a short ride and on the rail from the airport and about a 10 minute walk from the Pearlridge station. They have a wide selection of Japanese style takeout pastries. By noon most of the items are sold out. read more

Much better experience this time! The staff was genuinely friendly, and service was fast and efficient. I ordered an iced matcha latte that was smooth, refreshing, and perfectly balanced. Pillowy, plump pastries. The perfect grab-and-go snack if you want a quick bite while shopping. BRUG Bakery is a Japan based chain that has several locations in Hawaii. Out of all of their baked goods, my favorites are their sausage rolls, spinach and kale croissants, and tuna bomb. They also offer seasonal specialties that change on a regular basis. My favorite place to come for baked japanese pastries. Easy place for a quick breakfast or lunch, some of my favorites is the vegetable focaccia bread, spinach and ham rolls, hokkaido frank rolls, mochi doughnuts, blueberry cream cheese bread. The list goes on and on! I like this bakery because their pastries are light and not too sweet or heavy. Everything is baked fresh daily. Employees here are always so helpful and friendly. This place is a tiny cafe/Japanese bakery, quick pick up and go spot-- literally, you pick your pastries from what's displayed, order coffee and check out. They have multiple locations on the island -- few in town and here at Pearlridge! We love this location a lot, close to home and their staff here are very friendly and efficient! We've tried almost all of their pastries and we've enjoyed every single one we've had so far. Pastries are legit quality and can't compare to any other bakeries we've had on the island! They run out of the better pastries by noon so the earlier you go, the better. We love their Kalbi croissant, Mochi donuts, sausage roll, chocolate croissant, Portuguese bun... and that's just to name a few! I also noticed that each location got a special pastry that they only offer. They also carry seasonal pastries! For coffee, my boyfriend loves their iced honey cinnamon latte! He goes back for seconds bc he says it's very light and smooth. Also, the espresso they used doesn't taste too bitter. Another plus for me is that they have a rewards program! Baked goods in Aiea, Oahu, Hawaii... My friend and I were walking to our car after lunch at Pearlridge Mall - Uptown, when we passed by BRUG Bakery. I told my friend that there are other locations such as Kahala, Manoa, and two at Ala Moana Center. This location is cozy, but feels more comfortable because it opens up into the hallway of the mall. She was fascinated with these Japanese pastries and got some bread and danishes. I pointed out the cute choco custard bear, but she declined. I was looking for the neko (kitty) bun, but there were none. I described the kuma bread with many little bear faces, but I couldn't find any. When I checked in on my Yelp app, there was an offer for a free pastry with $15 or more purchase... yay! I entered my phone number into the system and got loyalty points! Yippee! Someone had bought me their Christmas Tree pastry from this location during the holidays. I didn't think that I would like it because it looked so overly sweet. Looks can be deceiving. It was actually delicious and not overly sweet at all. It was bread with vanilla filling on the inside. The outside was dipped in chocolate. It had red and green sprinkles on it. As you walk in, grab a tray and tongs! Brug is one of my favorite treats to pick up when I'm at Pearlridge! They have so many sweet and savory options to choose from. Sometimes I like to get breakfast or a snack. Some of my favorites are the anpan, choco bear, bacon epi, portugese sausage egg bun, and sausage roll. Their moo bread is also very good! Bringing some of the touches it has with Japanese baked goods... You can count on Brug for some yummy and unique pastries along with variety loaves of bread as their layout makes it easy to browse without any pressure as they're all displayed on racks with prices and description clearly on each item which you're able to pick out on your own and since covid it has changed to having each pre-packed so there's less stress on the handling. What I do love is their specials they present for every holiday/event and with that it's presented front and center of the shop and you can hear the ooohhs and wow from anyone that sees them. This Pearlridge location is a bit smaller than the Ala Moana Lanai location but still provides all the yummy sweet treats without the long drive making it very nice and convenient. Though the staff I must say are a bit frigid without a look or greeting as I circled around to see all the items they had and did have a few items that I've chosen and held it without thinking of using the trays since it was a small place as there was a family surrounding the area I kinda felt a bit frustrated as well and decided not to get anything here. This shop seems famous for its pastry however I didn't eat any while writing this review. I did drank a cup of coffee. I didn't see jelly coffee on their menu anymore probably changed owner. I really liked the fact that they have decaf options given that most of the coffee shops in the island don't offer that except Starbucks, and Dunkin's only occasionally. The taste is legit and has been better than those chain stores, in my opinion. What could have improved better is that they didn't have oatmilk on the day that I went, even it's on menu. The servers are attentive. The shop location is very convenient which is just on the entrance of the pearlridge mall uptown. read more

Went today at 8:05am gathered my pastries and waited for someone to ring me up. I guess someone didn't show up for their shift from what I could over hear. Waited 5 minutes still no acknowledgement or I'll be with you. I put my pastries back and said Thank you have a good day; I was trying to buy, no one helped me. Pretty sad as I work in the area and spend $40-$60 each visit. (often 2-3 times a month) I do love their iced matchas. One of the girls mouthed off as I left..if you aren't ready at 8am maybe you should leave the doors locked until you are ready to serve customers. I won't be back. Love Brug. Best Japanese bakery on the island in my opinion. The only downfall is that they never ever have croquette pan here. It's disappointing. The Ala Moana location has it all the time but not this one and that's my favorite one. Please bring it to this location! Love their an pan and hubby loves the onion pastry with bacon. The bread is so delicious here... so soft and really reminds me of Japan. Make sure to NOT go as soon as they open like I did... they don't have anything available. 5 stars because they are open before the mall so if you're here early you can always stop by here to get baked goods. I noticed they had some limited items only at this location as opposed to the one in town. I wonder if each location has specific limited items based on the location o_o Food was good as usual. Brug is a staple and I always eat the same thing, but I decided to try they location special which was this azuki anpan pulled bread. It was super good. I love anpan, but to be able to eat it in a bread form was super interesting. The beans were thicker and had azuki filling within the bread loaf as well. I really liked it. Whenever I'm in the area I am going to be searching this out. Service was quick and friendly considering I was there pretty early and I was half asleep and dead. The location is actually pretty big and I was very surprised there was a super tiny corner seating so I could eat my stuff in the corner. lol read more

Times have changed where there's no greeting or any questions asked by mobile employee. Upon entering I quickly noticed the sign to please wear mask, sanitize hands or put on gloves, line tray with their parchment paper, use tongs. All foods and snacks are now individually wrapped. I went from 1 to 10 in 5 seconds pissed and still displayed my poker face. As soon as I grabbed my dessert, I hear him, the mobile employee rearranging and cleaning behind me without saying a word. I'm also a bit hangry to eat something quick and on the go. That guy has got to go! Cashier made the biggest difference with being a wonderful role model of excellent customer service. "Is there anything else I can get for you?" My response, "No thank you." She also stated the total, counted change back to me, and thanked me for coming in. What a saving grace! Pastrami Cheese Focaccia: Can't even tell I'm eating pastrami. Biggest difference is there are no peppers. Pastrami texture complements cheese and veggies. I really liked the bacon and onion bread, the bread was so soft. The blueberry Danish muffin was so good with every bite, and not too sweet or generic tasting. The mango donut was delicious too. I wish they had this back in the East Bay as I would go all the time. Service was friendly and was able to use my yelp check in each time I went. This is my go-to place whenever I have a doctors appointment nearby. They are located inside Pearlridge mall next to Tj Maxxx and is open before the mall's scheduled time. Entrance is on the left hand side of the sliding doors. Masks are required upon entering. A decently priced grab and go bakery and cafe for bread lovers. If you go in early, not all of the items are put out yet but it's always nice to get them freshly made and baked. Their iced coffees and cold brew are pretty good; not too bitter or sweet. Dairy substitutes available. Some tips, they do have sales on their breads and baked goods from the previous day, something my mom loves. It's a 20% sale and they are still good quality. They also serve seasonal baked items as well which is worth the try. There are also items that are only sold at this location compared to the one in Ala Moana and Kahala. Like the Yuzu Chicken. Not going to lie, I'm a HUGE Brug fan for many years now so this may sound a bit bias but I think Brug is the best Japanese Bakery on the island! Everything is always freshly made and the wide variety of options makes me really happy. Personally I vary from sweet to savory items. It's really hard to saw what's my favorite but if you didn't know by now, every location has exclusive menu items. My favorite from pearlridge is their moo moo bread (aka the cow bread)! It's super fun to eat and taste sooo good toasted or not toasted as well. Add your favorite jam and you got yourself the perfect on the go breakfast. The staff is always very kind and hard working at this location. I've never had a problem with any and they always go out of their way to make things right. I really appreciate that especially during these past years of lots of hard ship with local businesses. If you need a quick bite, Brug is a go-to for any occasion! Ps. Stopped by here in search for the best custard buns after getting no help from Nagoya Waimalu. I like that the items were individually wrapped in cellophane which will make taking them to the Midwest easier. They provide hand sanitizer at the entrance with one way traffic flow.
